It's not a geek fail to know your Star Trek. The Doctor's assistant was Kes, who was blond. TNG had a ginger doctor, but she was the lead medical person, not an assistant. Dr. McCoy had a ginger nurse when Christine Chapel had red hair, but that wasn't a regular thing because she changed her hair color all the time.
