Cuathon, let's touch base after the holidays. I will try and help pull together enough people.....it might be doable.

1 month D:

9 man game. The reason days take so long, and actually hosts set 1 month as a deadline or else it can be worse, is because its L# style majority lynch and people are obsessed with the idea that D1 makes a great time to actually catch mafia players. I did once drop 300 posts in 3 days and make them end the day in 3 days, of course it was because they lynched me unanimously, but it was so worth it.

So what you're actually saying is, you forced a shorter day by making them lynch you? Unless you're a jester that would have been against your win condition, and would have been unfair on your team-mates, who might have been okay with the idea of deadlines that were longer than three days.

MS does have generally longer days than here, but when I last poked in they seemed to be shortening them. This is good - a newbie game that I played there once took about sixth months, which is a bit silly. I would, however, say that on DM deadlines can be too short for my liking.

I agree that some people on MS can be trolls or otherwise hard to deal with, but I'm curious about your rationale for coming here and introducing yourself by putting them down. Why does your game have to have so many people? Mafia for me is about interactions between people, and a game with that many people would make it hard to engage properly. I would rather play a well-designed smaller game.

I wonder if I would have a better chance scaring up players this time around. But probably not, and I have less time to write up lore.

I think you would find it completely impossible these days to get 45 players. I ran a 23-player WWII game in the BT a few months ago and getting enough to fill it without shrinking it down was tough.

It might be possible to get people from other sites, or I could modify the rules and shrink it to less people. I think its only truly effective with 60. Its not really mafia anymore with all the changes.

I mentioned that I tried to run a 60 player game on civfanatics and they made fun of me. They ran a 117 player game apparently. They said it wasn't too bad except the set up wasn't great and there was a lawyer. Whether that's a role or a lawyer was really good at it I dunno.

I think the system won't involve voting so much because a thread with all the players would be pretty intense.

According to the thread the Capo mafia, a special "superbowl of mafias" had 168 pages and over 5000 posts.

I am trying to think of a way to cut down posting. Since there are so many powers and factions it would be pretty hard to scum hunt. Perhaps during day phase factions could assign weaker players to out info and do various things. And since everyone has a role its not like people are going to be able to immediately murder anyone posting that so and so is such and such.

IMO each faction will have more info than they can act on, and might like to pass important info out. Maybe factions would use the main thread to primarily out Shadow or Seanchan players. And since other factions might be able to check your claims or have info that you have lying about roles could get you killed.

So you wouldn't have to read hundreds or thousands of posts because most communication would be intra faction or perhaps factions might liason with other factions in PMs.

You would still have voting during the day. And the Shadow and Seanchan would get night kills, maybe. And part of day posting could be that you would use a bulletproof or gun owner to post your info if not a generic weak role that can only info gather so another way to use the open thread to play games with people.

There are probably gonna be locations and items as well. So even weak roles could have something to do and would be less likely to quit. I know a lot of games have all "power roles" where its something like dual votes or generically weak stuff but the weakest roles I will have are faction cops where you can see if someone is Seanchan or CotL or Salidar or w/e. Then you have alignment scans, darkfriends or main shadow players. And then feeling the weaves, being able to sense if someone who went to your location cast a specific spell and such. Trackers who can see where someone goes and so forth.

I'd probably have to assign some sort of tinychat link to each faction for private talk.

I could probably host it at the TW forums or something. I don't wanna do it at civ fanatics since I'm about to play a game there and they are pretty busy. Still it would be good to know who here is interested.

It sounds fun though!

The real question is whether I can execute. As it always is. There is always some small slip up or imbalance some asshole blows up into a game ruining snowball.

I should know, I totally blew away the last game I was in. The site always plays this set up with 2 cells of hackers(theme is mods users hackers) because the people there don't do much but that forum and so they thought the first game they played was the normal way. Anyways you need to connect cells. One guy messed up so he outed himself to connect and I snuck in and made some smart claims and got super lucky getting the first kill of the other cell right after they had changed their minds on the deal they made with the guys had been outed and then I parlayed the trust of that cell to get them to kill one guy and told the other guy I would kill that guy. So 2 days in with 24 players all 6 hackers were revealed. I got lucky, but someone always gets lucky, so the set up has to be solid.

won't get any bigger without a new book...

you gottsta recruit.

I agree. We need to get more newer people playing Mafia. I'm sure there are members in the Social Groups that would like to try it out, but haven't yet due to whatever reasons.
