Pandy's Scumhunting Method

Seems to me that mafia games in written form over-emphasise re-reads, analysis, and unfun things like that.

I am going to declare it now: I don't see the point of analysing too much, as there is no way to determine scumminess from it. I have seen some interesting statistical analyses on mafiascum that try to pinpoint mafia through analysis of interactions or wordcounts or things like that, but statistics don't always mean what you think they do, and it leaves you open to the charge of not playing in a dialectical manner (thus avoiding detection as scum). It always boils down to a gut judgement - so why not skip the boring stuff?

This isn't to say that I don't approve of knowing the facts before making a decision, but just to warn people: if you see me in a game from here on, prepare for some gut judgements and badly thought-out play.

I invite people to critique my position and comment on whether they might play in the same way.

*lol* You KNOW that's the only way I know how to scum hunt. I've never been a strong player, and definitely not one to go throught analysing of posts and such. Generally my guy feeling serves me well.

So yes, I hate analysing, because it generally serves no purpose other than overreading what people do. And I find that doesn't help much.

Not for me. For those of you who find that it works... more power to you!

I don't analyse to the point of word count or sentence structure. But I do look back to see who a confirmed scum/townie interacted with and how. Who defended the dead guy? Who stood up for him? Who did he talk about in his posts and could it have been distancing or actual suspecting? But aside from that its usually on gut instinct. Though when I have gut feelings I do go back and look through their posts to see if there is any kind of evidence to back up my gut.

My gut instinct always tell me that the same players are scum so I don´t think it´s very reliable. Key and Alanna can´t be mafia in every game. lol

np pandy, your counter claim on my cop reveal in Neann's Hollywood mafia is still one of my fav games

Heh, I don't even remember that, but it sounds amusing!

Oh, and Verby: but now it's deliberate

Who was the real cop? O wait, that has to be you, because you once said you never fake claimed cop.

I think it's fun if a Mafia counterclaims.

oh i have flase claimed cop before, i've done it a few times and your right in that it is fun

but the game i'm referring to, i was batman, a really powerful cop (i believe i got the alignment, character name and role in my viewings) Pandy was a Jester, he was the Joker. i outted him in my role claim and he CC'd me claiming my findings we're too powerful.

it was a great game. the scum went on to recruit me later on and we won the game.

Oh, right. I don't think I got lynched, either. I remember being quite frustrated.

One thing I don't understand: why would you reveal over finding a Jester?

Posted

i dunno pandy. i forget if i got an anti-town reading or jester reading on you. most likely it was me being a novice and pulling the gun too early; i'd have to go back and read the game to remeber the reason why *nods*

I think I scumhunt a lot like Kat said she does. I'm terrible at analyzing, so I usually just wait for someone to ping my scumdar, and then try to find something to back up my suspicions. If I can't find anything at all that I can point to that actually pings me, I'll go ahead and say "gut feeling, I think so-and-so's scum," but I usually can find at least ONE post that seems to fit in with my suspicions.

Not that I'm really that effective; I used to have a really good gut but then Lily came along and messed it up... >.> Now it might be just as good as it used to be, but I don't trust it anymore. I've contributed to a few fiascoes all because my gut was screaming "LILY IS SCUM, SHE IS!" against all logic and reason (and, predictably, my gut was wrong).

Anyway, I'm not good enough at the logical analysis stuff to scumhunt that way, so yeah.

I think it was because you were scum so much at first, I got used to being right about you, but then I either got cocky or became afraid you were gonna pull a fast one on me. XD Either way, it was my fault; I don't really blame you.

You remember that BT game where I was Healer and I think you were Finder, and I still managed to throw in the possibility that you were leading us all by the nose, even though it made no sense? XD And I was serious, too, that's the sad thing. Ah, good times, good times.
