Mafia Grievances

i've been watching the game, and reading this thread, and watching some of the other games. and honest, i wouldn't want to play in that kind of game with those kinds of players, sorry. i'm not trying to be rude, it would just upset me.

before this, i was lurking around a few games that did look like fun, and where there weren't a lot of insults being tossed around, and people seemed to just be having fun, and probably playing in a way that would annoy most of the rest of you guys.

what i'm asking is - are there people who would still prefer to play that way, or is it just going to be this way or nothing? can there maybe be different. . . leagues? one for slow, boring people like me who don't like to trash talk, and one for i guess most everyone else?

Well, we are always needing more players, so I doubt the different leagues thing will happen, but you can definitely try to join games with player lists that you think are likely to make for a fun environment. I understand not liking the insults. I ignore most of them as being all bluster but know that some they can really fluster (rhyme intentional).

(i get that, i grew up with the kind of people who do that - the names my family called each other could not be posted here. but i have changed since then. i understand that it does not bother them. but it does bother me, and i don't want to go back to a point where it does not bother me. again, sorry, i'm not trying to insult anyone, i just would prefer not to play like that, or with others who are playing like that - but if everyone else does, i can live without mafia. no big. i like solitaire fine. )

Mafia here at dragonmount tends to be much nicer than over at Jetnation, the reason you're seeing so many insults thrown around in the game of thrones game is because the Jetnation guys have come over to show us how its done. The lessons to take away from that game aren't the language and insults, but the activity and active scum hunting and throwing around of ideas. One of the key things is the players actually being active and participating in the game.

So as long as you stick to dragonmount, you shouldn't have any issues with people being mean, I think. There will always be one or two exceptions though.

This. It's the activity that matters in that game, not the insults. That's who those guys are - it doesn't mean I want DM to be that (it shouldn't, that's not who this place is).

Who's watching Game of Thrones? The game is barely more than 2 days old and only through Day 1, and it has 535 posts. That's only 5 short of Hollywood Mafia's 540 - and that game is on Day 5 and started 25 days ago. This is what active mafia ought to be like, and I'm not patting myself on the back, because it has nothing to do with me as a mod - this is all about the players. Get this group together with any game setup, and the posts will be this fast/furious.

I've been watching every post with my jaw hanging to the floor. The things these guys can see in a "Hey, how ya doin?" is amazing. I really can't see myself reaching that level of play. I've been trying to follow this thread and listening to what the better players have been saying could be done to improve gameplay here, and I've really been trying to follow their advice, but your game just blows my mind Kiv. The things they come up with is stuff I'd never see in a million years, even though after they say it and give reasons for it, it makes perfect sense then. Maybe I could get that good one day but that day is still a ways off. I just hope you guys don't give up on DM mafia before I have the chance to get there.

You will. These guys have been playing mafia - and essentially playing with the same group of guys - for 2-3 years. When they started out, they were as clueless as any newb. I brought mafia over there from here, actually, and slowly worked them up through some basic mafia plays (voting teammates, voting with teammates, distractions, etc.) and they've just gotten better and better with experience. That's natural - and it'll happen for you too.

For example, "John McClane" (referred to as Ape b/c his original SN on JN was "Dr. Zaius") started out, essentially, FoS'ing the entire game in his first few games (at some point or other, he had been dead certain that every player was scum). That got referred to as "Monkey FoS" or "Ape style" and it's become a running joke. Now he uses the wild accusations as a way of beating the grass, as Mynd would say - seeing the types of reactions he can get and playing off them. Point being, it's not hard to go from completely clueless to very effective (Ape or other JNers, if you're reading this, I really mean "moderately effective," but I'm trying to instill some confidence in Ishy, so . . .) - it just takes experience.

And the only way to get experience is to be an active player in active games. Don't be afraid to try things to see if they work. Don't be afraid to fail. Don't be afraid to get yourself killed. As mafia, my motto is "win spectacularly or die trying" - yeah, we could stay under the radar and coast to victory as the town kills each other off, but where's the real fun in that?

And, on the flip side, don't kill people for being active. Don't view "leading the town" as a scumtell, no matter what some people might tell you. I lead the town no matter what my alignment is - because the whole fun of mafia is in trying to make cases and persuade people.

You betcha. You're on my autosignup list, and you know it, silly.

I can has invite...? LOL

Also, I have been watching the GoT game, and it has had me alternately LMAO and just in awe, basically. These guys are so far above the normal level of play I've seen here, it's just epically amazing. I like to think I'm getting better at playing mafia, but compared to these guys, I'm such a n00b it's ridiculous.

i feel like a toddler trying to keep up with teenagers in that game honestly

i love that alot of us here on DM seem to be seeing this game as a great learning experience, now we just have to aspire to use the lessons we learn (what kiv and others have stated) and apply it here at DM so we can get DM here back to what is was 2 yrs ago *nods*

honestly, on the subject of inactivity, i've noticed my own personal style change because of this. i've become more antagonistic and agressive just to get people active.

LOL, you too??! I had this big long response typed out in one of the games I'm in, realized that it was way too intense, and deleted almost all of it cus I didn't want to offend anyone, seeing as how this particular game hadn't been like that at all. I think Kiv's game has the potential to radically change mafia on DM. I hope these mafia gods stick around...

Red, expect a PM from me shortly. I has an idea...

Heh..... I'm getting too many requests for invites for me to remember. Don't worry. There will be open signups as well as autosignups. There won't literally be invitations. I'll warn everyone up front, though. Don't sign up if you don't intend to play every real life day. You will be replaced or modkilled for inactivity.

Kae, I wish people would worry less about offending someone. That's one of the things wrong with DM mafia. You HAVE to be willing to get under someone's skin and get them flustered. That's how scum slips happen. You have to be willing to vote your best friend, too. I struggled with that recently. I didn't want to vote someone because I love them. I thought I was way past that. Lucky for me they were hammered before I got caught up reading.

Jack, we're going to have to get into a good mafia fight to show that it's okay to do so. Be scum next time, 'kay?

This was the intent of having the game simply appear out of thin air. Many of the DMers in that game (myself included) really only play on JN now. However, I'm more than willing to play here if it means more folks like you are wanting to play an active and thinking game. Waiting around for random modkills will drive us away as fast as we flocked back for this game.

Personally, I'm making a commitment to playing more DM mafia, and Lily is responsible for that. She made a great post earlier in this thread that convinced me to keep at it here. I'm still playing my primary games on JN, but I'll happily play more here for a chance to help out and bring DM mafia back to where it was and JN is.

Like all of our old ones here sis?

I love cracking my knuckles and getting crazy to mix things up.

We've had some pretty awesome ones. I think our JN fight in Hess's game was kinda strong. OOMGUS :p

Noted. I'll keep that in mind next time. Certain people I've played several games with recently get under my skin without even trying, seemingly. I don't have a prob voting for my friends, LOL. Especially now that I know how certain people roll (you know who you are).

I just want to say that I hope DM mafia never gets back to quite the level of posting that Kivam's game was. I had to drop out because I couldn't keep up. And believe me, that sucked.

The huge amount of posting activity in the current GoT mafia game is way too much for me to even try to keep up with. With literally hundreds of posts in one day by the players there, it makes me wonder just how much work they are getting done at their jobs when they are online posting and playing in mafia games. biggrin.gif

I thought that was just my internet! I've been trying to post something for like an hour now LOL.

Yeah, when I used to have a job where I worked at a computer, I was on DM, like, all the time LOL. Now I work retail and I can't :( Totally infringes on my DM time :D

-I'm blaming DM breaking on Kiv's game...:p

Seriously, my DM has crashed four times today, I totally blame Kiv's game.

Ditto. tongue.gif
