That's exactly what this is, Cindy, a thread for people to complain about things that they want to get off their chest. I like your grievance. The basics of how to play the game aren't hard to understand. Vote for one person a day. Pretty easy, right?

 

About the cheating thing - mafia only works because most of the people in the game can't be sure of the others. If you take that away, it becomes something else.

so, since when is "playing with the aim to piss people off" considered a legit playstyle?

 

we all know that tempers flair in this game, sometimes a person cases you and either purposefuly or unintentionally twists your words. some times we get tiered of the same old thing being done to us and we just snap. its the nature of the beast. argements flair up and people loose their cool, everyones done this, it happens.

 

but i have never in my playing for 3 years seen a person jump out of the gate with the direct intention to just piss people off and claim it as a play style. this isn't a play style, this is trolling. this isn't playing the game, its causing drama for the sake of drama.

 

while we're all competitive in this game, i think we can all agree we're also friends. theres just a certain bond thats created through all of us after we've played 50 odd games together. to set out to purposefully piss off a person in this game will hurt this aspect of mafia i love. it will create strife between players and build resentment as well; not only that, but it will put people off from wanting to play the game.

 

further more, it garners no real info. its not a good scum hunting technique. yes when people get flustered and angery in this game, it can create a tell, reactions are good. but only if its over GAME related info and even better yet, cases being brought against them from things they've said in the current game your playing in. if anything, this is more a scum tactic (and honestly, isn't a tactic i would employ even then). it causes an arguement to jump up out of nothing game related, is generally centered between 2 individuals over nothing game related and gives you no real info on the people.

 

 

 

thsi is why i say its nto a play style, its trolling; and honeslty, people employing this "tactic" need to go back t learning the basics if they think this is how you play the game.

 

this specific game is over, so now we can discuss this.

 

 

i still maintain that this is not a playstyle and is more trolling the game. the aim of mafia is to outsmart your oppenents, not to just go and piss people off. if you go in with the aim to just piss people off, your goign to alienaite yourself and others will begin to refuse playing with you. i can't state it any more point blank than that.

 

edit - i's not a valid tactic and shoul not be tolerated imo, because it creates undue drama (both within the game and outside of the game) in an already drama filled game that imo could possibly lead to us not being able to play the game anymore here.

Actually I think it depends on the level of pissing off. If its all in game pissing off then its fine. Targeting a persons playstyle, tunnelling, and so on. Soon as it goes outside of the game in the slightest, it should he stopped.

I always have a rule in my games that requires people to be civil. I have warned people for not following it in the past.

 

Edit: so yeah, it's down to the mod. They can police the speech in their game.

i played my first mafia game with a mentor who never talked because she was on vacation. do not blame her, because i never requested another mentor, and understood the situation (it took 2 or 3 weeks for the game to start) but i think that having some insight on the players (and mentors) may have helped me some. but i am also a loud player, and was taken out by the town even though i was a vanilla. i even made it clear to someone who reads that i was town and a total newb early in the chat, but that might have been a bad play. but i will be happy to learn by experience, and will be happy to play again.

i'm talking specifcally about what EP did in the start of Kae & Keys ASoF&I game. where he was "pissing people off" about random things, purpsefully being obtuse abotu aspects of the game and arguing canon when he didn't know the canon because he saw it got a reactions from people, reactions that happened to be them getting perturbed and pissed off.

 

nothign game related, nothing about what a specific person said (ie: making a case) just picking some random angle and playing the troll with it to get reactions and an angle which has nothing what so ever to do with game related content other than source material.

edit - even if he did, i still say this is not a valid method. its one thing to case people and they get angery. or a persons words get twisted and the fly off the handle, or you step on a persons nerves on purpose and they emo melt down, or to see what a person does in game (or other games) and use it to pressure them or put a feel out for them (like people teasing me about meta, or using the no-lynch to guage responses and check meta).

 

and quiet another to pick a handful of people who your not casing but being a troll on different topics that garner no game related info (like arguing abotu source material) just to get them pissed off to get some reaction from them. this has no basis in the game, does nothign for game related info and does nothing but cause bad feelings between players and gives no basis for building later cases and shifting out scum later on in the game. if anything, it distracts and allows for scum to capitalize on it.

 

 

i get that EP is known around here for out of the box schemes, and i'm not meaning to pick on him, but this antic of his severly pissed me off beyond just that game which is why i want a discussion on it. as i've said, i can see tactics like this causing Mafia to be banned because of how much drama outside the game they will create. and anythign that threatens my addiction on this board must be killed *nods and scratches her track marks*

Testy: Ok, first of all, we are not allowed to talk about games that are currently running, but I will write this one post and hopefully you understand.

 

Testy, I understand that JLMs abscense made it harder for you. But most first time players doesn't get a mentor; they just gotta jump right in. I've gotten lynched on Day one in a couple of my first games too; it happens. Someone has to be lynched on Day 1. The problem with you, was that more experienced players tried to advice you on how yo play the game. Mafia is an old game; you can't make up new rules as it suit you in monopoly, and the same within mafia. It's a game played in a specific way. I and others tried to learn you how, since it was quite clear your mentor was abscent. Normally, a first-time player gets a Day 1-freepass. You ignored advice given to you, and played in a way that sabotaged the purpose of the game: Finding mafia. And saying that you're vanilla town is no sure way to be believed. Anyone can say anything. I can say that I'm the Queen of England. The only way to know for sure what someone is, is when they're dead. That is the sad fact of it. You confused people, pissed people off, made a distraction, and refused to listen to advice.

 

And that is the only thing I will say on it before the game is ended. I will advice you to read Peacesells' thread with newbie advice (it's on the first page in the forum here), and if you really feel that you were treated wrongly, take it up with Darthe.

Honestly I don't think EP tries "trolling" people on purpose at all. I think he tries using that excuse when people start getting pissed off at him, because he has an abrasive playstyle, so that it looks like he has an excuse for acting like a jerk at times ("Oh don't worry guys, it was for reactions"). I think the canon discussions were him legitimately trying to put his two cents in about what he DID know about the story, I don't think he was purposefully trying to piss people off with that maneuver. He was and is purposefully obtuse at times, but I think it's because he thinks other people will think it's cute or something. And honestly, while he didn't do that great in that game, his scumdar usually isn't that bad honestly.

 

Now, while it prob looks like I'm defending EP here, I will say that I don't like his playstyle much either. He goes for the big play WAAAAY too often, trying to look like a genius pulling off some awesome gambit or maneuver, when the vast majority of the time all his moves do is hurt his team when town. When scum, they can be surprisingly effective at times, mostly cause I think he's an easy candidate to bus rofl, but as town he either gets himself lynched and omgus's all the way down to the grave, or confuses and misleads town and distracts everyone from scumhunting cause they get peeved at him.

 

That all being said, I honestly don't really have a problem with "trolling" being used as a legitimate strategy to play the game with. I don't think it's effective, and it will most likely alienate all the other players, but I'm all about people having the freedom to play the game in a ton of different ways. Some would say that Mynd trolls at times (although he does it like a gentleman), and it seems to work for him. If someone goes too far with this strategy however, it is easy to see that they will most likely piss everyone off enough to the point where they start policy lynching them, or just not playing with them.

 

And I also think it's a violent overreaction to think that mafia would get banned just because of someone trolling. I think DM mafia can withstand much more antagonistic personalities than EP's, and those that it can't withstand can just be disallowed from playing, if it ever became obvious that certain personalities were causing serious problems for the whole board. But I don't think we're really anywhere near that territory yet. EP can be annoying, but I think he just needs to learn to try and work with the team more often, and not go off the deep end trying some risky play just so he can feel like a badass. He might say that's how he enjoys the game, but if we were all playing kickball and someone was constantly coming up and stabbing the ball cause that's how they liked to play, well then eventually that kid would have to spend some time in timeout or something till he realized that he needed to enjoy the game in a way that let everyone else enjoy it as well
