AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! @$#&^!!!! *kicks rocks* Serioulsy?!?!! How hard is it to be even partially active in a mafia game?! First, why sign up for a game if you aren't going to be playing in it? We all have offline issues, but for crying out loud, it is INCREDIBLY rude and irresponsible to sign up for a game (or even MOD one) and then suddenly bail on it. All you have to do is pop on once every couple days and vote someone or chime in. If life suddenly deals you too much that you just can't find it humanly possible to find a way to get online, send your vote or night action by snail mail. I'll even provide the stamps for you! I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT IT IS TOO HARD TO GET ONLINE FOR 2 MINUTES TO FRIGGEN VOTE OR ASK TO BE REPLACED!!!!! I don't hate inactive players, but I do DESPISE inactivity.....so please, for all the starving children in Narnia.........if you sign up for a game, PLAY THE GAME!!!

This, a hundred times this. Both as a mod and as a player I find inactivity to be the most irritating thing there is. I have had a low tolerance for it in my games, and that is quickly heading towards zero tolerance. >.<

I'm going to start a new written rule in my games that I will replace non-active players at my discretion. I don't even feel the need to PM them anymore. You're right, Mynd. It's rude and disrespectful to the other players and especially the mod.

hmmm skimming through this makes me want to see what a game that actually starts at day one is like I got called out in Locke's game for being a hammer vote in a deadline game because I didn't want to see a random lynch, (that was really the only part I understood as I knew nothing else about mafia at the time other than random lynch = bad

atleast I tried though I was completely lost when I started that game I'm not happy with what Ive been seeing following the remaining part of the game.

I think at one point I may refuse to allow certain people to sign up directly for my games and instead put them as backups until they've shown me they can be active and play a game through to the end (whenever/if they happen to replace someone)

edit: just so it's clear I'm not referring to anyone at the moment

I think for the very next game I mod I'll keep notes on activity though so I can remember who it is I'm not happy with

No need to clarify, Nolder. Hell, I do have a list (in my head) of people I won't let into a game of mine. Unless I see those people active in other games, I'm not going through the inevitable headache of having to deal with inactivity and/or replace them. Simple.

To all mods: don't feel bad about doing this. It will teach the inactive players to either stop being inactive or stop playing mafia. Frankly, either one is fine with me.

So my biggest problem with mafia today is four things

1) the speed

2) players waiting till deadline to pile on votes

3) people saying something is scummy but give no reason

4) people being overly nice. (it's a game where your lynching and stabbing. Get ruthless, call people out, it makes it more fun)

I just had to say somethings

1) agree, good mods use deadlines - however, deadlines typically favor scum

2) part of the game, get over it

3) what people say IS the game, get over it

4) how people say what they say, get over it

:)

So the basic message you are trying to convey is get over it? (you should go watch that movie)

Yes.

Everything that goes on in a mafia game thread, from the spam to the FOS'ing to the emo meltdowns is part of the game. If you don't like any aspect of that, then learn to get over it - or stop playing.

can we be angry about the people who dont stay active?

Giving this site a quick scan, it seems you guys are all angry about everything mafia... lots of whining.

My solution to inactivity? Kill those people first. Because inactivity is the most basic of wifoms in the game... are they legitimately neglectiing the game, or purposefully laying low? Well... kill them and find out.

No reason to angry about it though.

i hate to say this, but the Ape is right.

except about the "get over it" in regaurds to people being overly nice in Mafia here at DM. its a cut throat game, if i wanted a nice "sunshine and rainbows" type of game i'd stick to Candyland

I don't think he's right. Well, maybe about killing inactives, yes. But otherwise, I don't agree with his attitude. Personally, I think we should be able to have a thread where we can "whine" if we want to. I don't really call it whining. I think it's a good place for people to share what they like/don't like about the way things are going on in a given game. If you don't like it, don't read the thread.

This is kinda turning into a back and forth arguementive type thing can we take it back to the mafia topic and maybe instead of just saying wht we dont like about it suggest a way to fix it.

No. I'm not wrong... being overly nice can be just as much a strategy as it is an annoying tendency. Behavior is strategy in mafia, so there's really not much that can be done about it. Every time you play mafia you are empowered with the ability to convince people to "kill" people. If there are players bothering you with their behavior and you haven't made a push to kill them, then its your own damn fault and threads where everyone whines about it are a pathetic way of highlighting that fact that people at DM are too big a bunch of wusses to kill people for the lulz

Hahaha... typical.

Griping about particular games is supposed to be done in the dead thread, and post game conversations. Then, its over and you move on to the next game. Pretty cut and dry, like a one night stand.

This, what you are doing, is whining. The thread asked for input, I'm giving it. I happen to think that where it concerns deception, anything goes. People complaining about behaviors like niceness or inactivity, are simply bad players that haven't figured out where and when to leverage those tendencies to their advantage in games.

Nothing needs to be fixed. If you don't like what someone is doing in mafia, kill them. If you don't bother to do that, then its your own fault. There doesn't need to be a "way to fix it" because some peopel rely on inactivity and kissing ass to get by in games, what are you going to do? You can't outlaw everyting that people may or may not do to deceive you.... otherwise there's no friggin point.

I've learned some pretty good stuff from threads like these. I like the discussions, personally.

I'm not advocating that the thread doesn't happen. Its a good discussion, but my point of view is that there is no "fix" to the things people thing are flaws in the game. Over-compensating for things like how people play, is going to leave you with a puzzle that's too easy to solve. That is my opinion... if someone in a game hates inactivity, let them IN THAT GAME stick their necks out and make a push to lynch inactives. Its part of the game. Don't ask the mod to make rules to address it... to me, that is remedial

you say that there is no "way to fix it" but by your own submission stated the obvious way...

I can see where the Ape is coming from with his argument. What happens in the game thread is gameplay - and should be treated as such. Whether people use inactivity (or any other tactic) as a strategy, it happens accidentally or is unplanned doesn't matter. The point is that people will read into everything, regardless of what is intended or truly the case. Regarding the "nice" comment, I think that has a lot to do with the nature of this site. It's PG-13, which means that people have to be careful about what they say. I will admit that I want to come into cyberspace and say a few choice words sometimes when I play, but I restrain myself because I know that I could be punished for saying the wrong words. Like the Ape said, it's a strategy. You can be cutthroat and still follow the PG-13 guideline - it just takes creativity with words.

I agree with the inactivity discussion to a point. Look at what just happened in the Black Tower Mistborn game to see a case where I would argue for Mod intervention relating to the inactivity problem. I won't go into further detail because the game is still running.

bah, i'm not talkign about being nice as a play style, you catch more flies with honey than crap. i'm talking about the people who can't handle a playstyle like mine commign after them (either for casing or setting them up to get lynched) and claim i'm perosnally attacking them when it's just me being my assertive, overly competitive agressive self.

if theres no one pissing off another player and trying to get them to emo melt-down on purpose to get them lynched or ruffling their feathers to try and shake somethign loose and get a read on them, then its not a game of Mafia. i keep the GFY rule in my games for a reason, and thats because i'm tired of the "mafia light" atmosphere sunshine and rainbows crap that has started to creep into games here. and i don't care if the person is new to the game, they're told in advance of how rough these games can get. if you're not prepared for your BFF to use your own weakness against you to get you lynched then don't play the game.

i do go a bit easier on fresh newbs, but only just a little; and after the first game, kid gloves are off because then you know what your getting yourself into. going easy on them and giving them a pass because their new doens't allow them to learn from their mistakes and get better; plus it reinforces this "play nice" crap.

point is, there is no playing nice in Mafia. in this game, i'd lynch my own Mother in a heart beat and frame Bubba to save my own skin without thinking twice. i luv you guys dearly and consider you all to be my friends; but in game i'll be damned if i'm gonna loose, its never personal, i don't hold grudges in the game unless someone comes in personally attacking my buddies (like that one cat last year i went off on) it's only Mafia
