Song 41: Diamonds & Rust

Starting off with something fairly mainstream :)

ORIGINAL: Joan Baez

Released in 1975 on the album with the same title. The US folksinger is mostly famous for her interpretations of other peoples songs, but she was an accomplished songwriter herself, and this is perhaps the best example of that. The song is loosely based on her relationship with Bob Dylan.

vs.

COVER: Judas Priest

The British metal pioneers covered this song on their 1977 album Sin After Sin, and has since been a live favourite.

While the album version is more traditional metal, I picked a live version from their 2004 reunion tour. A more acoustic setting, and a Rob Halford who sings it more emotionally than ever.

Song 42: (Everything I Do) I Do It For You

ORIGINAL: Bryan Adams

The Canadian rockers most famous song after Summer Of 69, specifically written

to promote the -91 movie Robin Hood - Prince Of Thieves. The song did better than the movie, and spent amazingly 16 consecutive weeks as #1 on the UK charts, a record it still holds.

vs.

COVER: The Fatima Mansions

The british art/indie groups version was recorded for the NME charity album Ruby Trax in -92. A quite radical change from the original, there is no trace of a power ballad here, but instead a dance influenced groove that echoes of Massive Attacks hit Karmacoma (though since that song was not released until -94, perhaps it is the other way around].

Right...I have always liked the Bryan Adams version, but there was just something so different and exciting about The Fatima Mansions that I am voting for that.

Also, if you are interested in hosting "Originals vs. Covers" this week, or next week (starting 7th December), or the week after (starting 15th December), i.e. the 3 weeks when I am busy studying for my exams, please drop me a PM. It will count as an activity towards December's roll call.
