ToM: Leaked Beta Copy

Recommended Posts

Yes sir. Can I be upset about being banned?

Yes. But there is a decibel limit to the whinning you may engage in. Don't exceed it or things get much worse. There may even be forced readings of Sword of Truth involved.

Jesus Christ man, that's a little harsh, isn't it? I mean Twilight would be one thing, but Sword of Truth? Ahh well, guess you gotta do what you gotta do.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a huge fan of Sword of Truth, especially the part where he tries to force his views on us about objectivism, but still... it's not that bad

Anyone that writes about Dragons, Wizards and magic swords then has the gall to call that "Not Fantasy!" does not earn my respect as a writer. Even JKR had to admit she was writing Fantasy. Sheesh.

He calls them just straight fiction because Fantasy "always" has an evil overlord that has to be fought by a hero. He then insults anyone who calls his books fantasy and that they aren't smart enough to read his books if they think it is.

All I gotta say is what is Jin Jang or whatever his name was, when I read the first 4-5 books that guy seemed like an Evil Overlord not to mention Richard's brother.  ::)

He could learn some humility I think. He could learn a thing or two from Brandon Sanderson.

I agree-he strikes me as utterly arrogant and pompous.  I wonder what TOR has to say when he calls the SoT non-fantasy...yet they're published under the Tor Fantasy imprint.  Okayyyyyy

i have a pretty text book policy about stealing.

- no stealing-

this includes copyright law and other state and federal legislation.

On a more personal note:

If you respect something like The Wheel of Time, and are a long term fan go buy the book.  Let us not forget the late, great and never forgotten James Oliver Rigney, Jr. (October 17, 1948 – September 16, 2007).  This man is a war hero, and has left a legacy in his wake that we are all a part of.  When faced with terminal illness he decided to devote himself to treatment but he still took time to leave something for us.  He would probably appreciate it if you just bucked up and spent the $35.00.

LotM, nobody was saying they won't buy the book, even those of us who admitted we'd be hard-pressed not to read the copy if it fell in our laps.

Apart from that, I have a great respect for Mr. Rigney, and I love his work. That's not a derivative of his being a veteran. I don't know why you'd expect non-Americans to have a special respect for US-military veterans. If you stop and think about it, you'll realize military service isn't as rare a phenomenon in some parts of the world as it is in America.

Also, most of the world earns less than 10USD per day. I'm more fortunate than that, thankfully, but still 35$ may very well mean a different thing altogether to some people that it does you. Frankly, your remark seems patronizing to me.

And so it begins. Is this going to be another 3 page discussion on respect blah blah blah or can this be dropped please? I thought this thread was started as a fictictious little lark on a fantasy of finding a copy of the book. Relax people. It's not that serious.

Did Goodkind jack this thread when we weren't looking and started preaching?

Me to. On th GH of my reread for ToM. So, Towers of Midnight. I just got past that part in the GH where they talk about the towers of midnight in Seanchan. Is the title of the book just a coincidence or will there be a whole lot o Seanchan in this book?

Yep, this thread was just a lark.  I was hoping we could avoid the fruitless debate on illegal downloading of 'intellectual property'.

I thought there had to be something about Seandar in this book, but who knows?  Brandon (or Harriet or whatever) named the book, not RJ.  However, this quote from RJ about the ToM makes me really, really, hope they show up.

Q: You wrote about a very exotic place, called the Towers of Midnight.  I think it seems to be an evil place, because  as far as I know the Deathwatch Guard is trained there...

RJ [interrupts]: No. The Towers of Midnight are a place that is run by the Seekers: a political prison2, a place of execution at least for very high-ranking political prisoners. They can’t shed your blood, so they simply stuff you into a sack and hang you over the side of one of the towers until you die, but very careful. A sack lined with velvet so none of your blood will ever seep out and be spilled. Remember there have been times this has been done - this is not an invention of mine. There are cultures in this world where [for] people of certain classes, it was illegal to shed their blood: you could not, even in an execution. Therefore, they would roll a man in layers of velvet and put him inside a bag and have him trampled to death by horses, but the velvet was there to absorb his blood, and the leather bag to insure nothing seeped out, so his blood was never shed. It was never spilled on the ground. You see? So that’s what the Towers of Midnight are.  I won’t tell you a lot more, because I don’t know that I will ever show them in one of the books, but it’s possible, so…

Q [interrupts]: You showed them maybe in the second book, as far as I know, only one sentence I think...

RJ [interrupts]: I’ve mentioned them, but I did not show them; you were not there.  There’s a difference between mentioning and actually being there, taking a character there to see them.
