Mafia Game Secondary threads

So, we've all seen them, the threads where the dead players can chat, the threads where those not playing the game can chat and participate, and the threads where the dead players can continue to contribute to the game.

Whats your opinion on these types of things?

Personally, I think the threads for those who opt to not play the game but can still participate are an interesting idea, but have thusly proved to be very unsuccessful. I think I have seen one game ever where they were well used, and that was the game where the concept was introduced. It was the Illuminators mafia, run by Raena waaaaaaay back in the day (In fact, that was Wes's first game I think, and the Kivam Gambit game).

Dead player chat threads... my opinion on them is that they are a risky thing to do. There's too much chance that the dead players will let something slip, or that the live players will read them and allow their gameplay to be affected by the dead player's stuff. If you're dead and you want to talk about the game, chat with the mod, clear the option of talking to other dead players with the mod and chat with them if the mod says yes, or just be quiet and wait til the game is over to jump in and add your opinions. Either way, keep it away from anywhere that can influence the game.

Dead player participation threads... this is mostly an extention of the "players who opted not to play but still want to participate" threads, and these are an absolute nono. The point of killing a player is to silence them, and whats the value in that if they can keep on talking?

They are quite controversial for sure. I like them, as it allows participation and interest to keep running in the game, which can make it quite fun. If I receive complaints however, I just lock em.

I'm of the "try anything once" school of thought. I tried a dead thread once as a mod. I wasn't impressed. As a player, I loved it, but it's easy to cross lines. I doubt I will have one again. I've never thought to invite non-players to have a chat thread until I read (part of) an old game where there was one. I did START one one time before I ever played a single game....lol. (I was following along and I couldn't resist saying something.)

Personally, I prefer making everyone wait until the game is over to discuss it. But that's just me. Also, my modding style is constantly evolving, so I might think differently a few months from now.

One idea I find interesting is the thought of having a dead QT where the mod PMs the QT address to dead people and they can talk about what they know before the game's over and speculate about where their teammates are going.  I can see this being an issue if the address is leaked, but that could be the case with any QT.

I have to say I'm not keen on them. Once someone is dead, they are dead and shouldn't be able to put any opinions about the game to anyone still in the game, unless they are on a team with a QT.

I have been involved in one and got carried away and it was pointed out, when I looked back, I have to say I wasn't proud of it and think that it wasn't helpful to the game (the thread that is)

I love the idea of a public thread, and Raena's game is a classic example of this. It was great, especially as poor Sira was utterly gutted at the end to think a mafia would try and vote off another mafia. (plus no dead people were allowed to post there) But it was an unusual game, not many were being played at the time. now there are too many that I think public threads just wouldn't get the participation. It's hard enough to get some players active because they have signed up to too many games, or they just seem to forget about the game  :-\

I think it is a good idea depending on the mod and how it interacts with the game.

If a mafia member is killed, they can corrupt the game from there, and innocents can give their perspective also to help the town. In the end it boils down to players ability to use what they've got.

I just feel that once someone is dead, they should stay that way! It's totally unfair! I have yet to see any be useful if anything they haven't been. I ignore them now, and won't touch them with a barge pole

I'm not terribly keen on the idea of dead threads just because of the risk of info slipping.

I did try a dead thread QT once on myndjack.  Most players checked in at least, but there wasn't a great deal of chat.  Maybe a bigger game would get more traffic.

I don't like dead players being able to communicate with the living unless there is a basis for it in the lore of the source material.

I've tended to find public and dead chat threads slightly off-putting when I'm playing in a game, and feel that they can quite easily alter the outcome of a game.

Kind of off-topic, but does anyone have a link to this game? I've serached for it before but can't find it...

You maybe right, but I checked what was the Illuminators and it jumps from Dec 07 to June 08. I do know that the game ended in June, I was on holiday and I had to make sure there was internet connection because I was still in the game!

I just have a feeling it might have been Jun 07, Egwene was still around and she has been long gone now, and I had a feeling things went wrong with the database and we had to move suddenly to this DM.

my memory is just no good!

No, definitely ran on the old boards. I'd find the link (I have found it before) but they aren't loading for me right now.

Edit, found it: Here's the link:

Yeah, it doesn't work. But here's the link to the page you can find it on (chapterhouse murder mystery)

And here's the (not working) public thread:

For anyone wondering:

1) This is the Gambit Game

2) This is also Wes' first ever mafia game, and he made a newb mistake that lost the game for the town (self voting as a power role)

3) You can see Sirayn in action, in all her glory, on the Public thread)

This.

I hate dead threads for this exact reason.  Now, a public thread where non-players can read and put in their 2 cents?  Cool.  But a thread for dead players to keep talking?  No way.

This is SO good to know!  ;D
