Wheel of Time music?

Excluding the horrible Wheel of Time soundtrack CD, what kind of music do you guys associate to the books? It can be music you listen to while youre reading or music you'd like to see in a movie.

I'm basically just making this topic because there are some songs by Nightwish that just reek wheel of time to me. "Away" was the first one, I really associate that with Elayne and Nynaeveäs travel from Tanchico to Salidar for same reason. Then there's one called "Walking in the Air", that I feel really fits Tel'aran'rhiod. And also "Forever Yours", which I would call Elayne's theme. I can recommend downloading these songs, they're really beautiful and atmospheric.

So if they make a Wheel of Time movie I'd definetely want the guy who writes the songs for Nightwish to do the music. I know he's a fan of the series.

Anyway, any other ideas?

Nightwish is a band i have always associated with the wheel of time, while it's true that the style used in the lord of the rings may fit, i've always seen the wheel of time as being more modern and with far more modern influences.

There have always been bands and songs i've associated with characters, down with the sickness by disturbed i've always been left thinking of perrin and his relationship with the wolves; not neccicarily because of the lyrics but the primality of the song, the pacing of the drums and voice that comes close to a bark at times just fits perfectly. Dark Chest of Wonders by Nightwish has always made me think of an epic battle with rand battling moridin sword in hand, but eventually using more and more of the power until it's no longer a battle of strength as much as a fight of pure power. A band calles For My Pain... (some of the same members as nightwish) released a track called autumn harmony that always makes me think of lan, it hasn't the orchestral aspect or the female voice that nightwish, but it has the layered harmony and the power of the instruments showing when i listen the layers to lan, the powerful warrior on the top layer but below that, the man who loves very deeply; this song in particular shows that to me...

I could go on but i'd prob go through everyone from rand to siuan to elaida to rhuarc and tbh not only do i not have time i doubt you care :P so i'll just stop there for now

Modern Music and Fantasy (medieval-rennaisance timeframes) dont work for me. It just seems to take away from the overall mood, if say Hendrix, or the Beatles (throw a rapper or country star in there if thats your tases) is playing in the background while theyre in Shadar Logoth. Wouldnt quite do it justice.

SO i like the whole Orchestra thing alot of movies like LotR, Narnia, and many others are going with. It really adds to the movie.

Evanescence most definately! *drools* so haaawwt

Runie

Those would have to go to very specific scenes ein the books.

I think one of those would have to be somewhere along the lines of when mat ordered that one womans death. Another would be for rand mentally adding names to his list.. Maybe even some 'custom' ones...

Thing about those songs though, is the main theme tends to be 'sorrow' and 'sadness', that and sucide... So far, those haven't had to much 'presence' in wot. Though one scene I could see it in is kod when you find out about the Amyr? Or whatever they call them self on tremalking.

THough I will admit in Daredevil they had THE perfect mix with those songs and the movie, it takes a bit of work to find just the right song for just the right scene and make them mix as awesomely as that movie did.

i really liked the lotr music, because it was great for backround influence. its really soft and melodic and its adds to the mood of the movie. And, not to be downing evanescence, but in Dare Devil, it kind of consumed the movie, so you were listening to the music more than paying attention to the movie. This was great for an action flick, but not for the wot novels. (i also like the v for vendetta music :D )

I think of a lot of folk style music from all over the world.

Throughout the books there is music always. Throughout the villages and towns, during festivals and even just people sitting down to have an ale in a tavern.

Just look at Thom. He does all kinds of songs, mostly folk songs with his flute, and he uses his harp to do more delicate songs, ballads and acompaniment of tales and stories.

There are a lot of songs in the earlier novels, when the characters used to pay close attention to the music. this reflects how their focus has changed over time. At this stage of the story, there seems little time to dwell on songs about humor with goodwives scolding their husbands about drinking too much.

There are regions that have more of an Asian feel to the music.

I see the sound of The Wheel of Time to be a lot of Irish and Celtic styles, mixed in with Indian and Eastern Asian styles. for towns like the Two Rivers and Andor, maybe a blugrassy kind of jaunty feel...

For the Shadow though, that's a whole new thing. The forsaken and the shadowspawn feel like a more industrial hautned sound. Lots of metal, mixed with disonance. Asmodean would be a great subject to shift the music score on. In the world of wheel of time, the common use of music isn't really ever organized into a big orchestral deal.

the use of big orchestral pieces in the soundtrack would have to be limited if we're working thematically here. sparing use would make it all the more dramatic when a big swelling piece is used to accent a scene.

I would prefer music specially written for it a la LotR and Gladiator. With Jonn on the use of folk/ethnic music. It would underline the differences of the varying cultures... The Aiel definately want a nomadic desert folk music feel... string orchestra or heavy rock would be wrong there for the most part...

Mostly a mix of various traditional music from Europe, mainly Ireland, Scandinavia, Normandy, but also influences from other regions, like the Middle East, Greece, Russia, China, Japan, Tibet etc, creating distinct styles for the different nations. All played on traditional instruments. And it should be real folk music, not some lame crap like lotr, that just made me want to cry.

The feel of the music should be that it's something that the characters could have actually played themselves.

Absolutely no modern music, or popular artists. Thom might be a master of the harp, it still won't sound anything like Steve Vai.

I'm a metal addict and i totally relate to the gothic and black metal scene . I think the goth metal band 'Kamelot' basically wrote their songs after reading WoT cos it fits so well. If they ever make a WoT movie, the cd 'The Black Halo' will have to be in the soundtrack. If you can download music, i recommend downloading the entire cd right now. If you're looking for specific songs, one of the songs in the cd called The Haunting (somehwere in Time).. is totally Lews Therin talking [even says ilyena] so when i first heard it i was like wtf wow.

The singer's voice has always fit what i imagined as Rand's so to me its like him singing. Since its Gothic metal its more or less about pain, dying etc but that fits Rand really well too. They also have a song called Gleeman (which i was like omg when i saw the name in an album).

I agree that nightwish can fit WoT ...well basically every goth metal band has some material which can fit because of their inclination towards fantasy elements in lyrics and melody. However, some fit better. I personally separate goth metal itself into different categories e.g bands like nightwish, lacuna coil, within tempation etc into the category of melodic/heavy with a tendency towards more popular elements. What i categorize as pure gothic are bands like Therion, Epica, Sirenia, Tristania, Eternal Tears of Sorrow etc.

I find my category of 'pure gothic' to be much more fitting, esp because their main is the vocals rather than instrumentals. The opera quality is essential if you're looking for music that fits WoT.

Celtic can be good too but they lack some substance.

Rock/pop/rap/country/punk will never fit because fantasy is essentially 'sad'. WoT itself begins with a death and a knowledge that the entire world is doomed one way or another plus war isn't a laughable matter. Love isn't either.
