Round 2, Tie 2

Carlos Santana

Santana's piercing pure tone is amongst the most recognizable sounds in popular music. He brought Latin rhythms and jazz improvisation to rock, and formed his own band in 1968. Various influences have styled his innovative approach. He is known as a fiery, impassioned soloist, and articulates fluid passages that culminate in lengthy sustained notes. He won a record equalling 8 Grammy Awards in 2000, and remains a compelling musician.

Black Magic Woman

vs.

Les Paul

Les Paul was a guitar inventor as well as a player. He was tinkering with electronics from an early age, and built the first solid-body electric guitar prototype. In 1952, Gibson began selling the Les Paul model, now a rock & roll standard. He also made a string of futuristic pop hits with wife Mary Ford in the early Fifties.

How can you have a guitarist competition and not mention Stevie Ray Vaughan? If you don't know, here is a clip that you only really have to watch the first minute and a half to two minutes. The rest is incendiary as well.

Clafification Corky: is the guitarist a vocalist as well? Because that changes my vote

As a non vocalist Santana absolutely

Time to tie this up - and I vote for Les Paul. A losing vote, but there we go!

As a result, it is a 5-2 for Santana.

As I was out last night as it was Northie's birthday yesterday, I wasn't able to get the next vote up. Instead, it will be a double whammy again!

Round 2, Tie 3

Chuck Berry

An important star of the early development of rock and roll, with some impressive guitar skills. He was voted as the 6th best guitar player in Rolling Stone's Top 100 Guitarists, and his playing definitely deserves such a high rank.

vs.

Dave Murray

Dave Murray is part of the original heavy metal band know as Iron Maiden. He is quite possibly one of the most influential metal guitarist of all time, laying down the foundation for all forms of metal to follow from progressive to death metal. Even Metallica and Megadeath came after Iron Maiden. All must bow down to Dave Murray!

Round 2, Tie 4

Jimmy Page

Part of Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Page was at the forefront of guitar playing in the 1970s. From their first to last album, Page hasn't lost his technical authority. A wide variety of groups influenced Page before forming Led Zeppelin, including being a first-call studio musician, playing on Kinks and Everly Brothers dates and honing his production skills on singles for John Mayall and future Velvet Underground vocalist Nico.

vs.

Jimi Hendrix

One of the most amazing guitar players ever...and his live recordings are so much better than his studio work. According to Pete Townshend, "He had a kind of alchemist's ability; when he was on the stage, he changed".

This ended a bit later than expected as I thought I would get online a bit over the weekend when I went home, but sadly didn't. Anyway, time to wrap this up and move onto the semi-finals.

In the third tie, Chuck Berry won by 5 votes to 2.

In the fourth tie, Jimi Hendrix progressed with a narrow 4-3 win.

An important star of the early development of rock and roll, with some impressive guitar skills. He was voted as the 6th best guitar player in Rolling Stone's Top 100 Guitarists, and his playing definitely deserves such a high rank.

vs.

Eric Clapton

Simply one of the greatest guitar players ever! Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 3 times, he revolutionized guitar playing in the 1960s by making it the focal point of any band through a few simple moves - turning up the amp and moving the microphone. Blues influences his rock guitar playing, and he was ranked number 4 in Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". Classics that show off Clapton's playing include Layla and Steppin Out.
