One of the more intriguing aspects of the TV show is how broad of an audience Amazon will go for. I think the possibilities realistically range from TV-14 to TV-MA. TV-PG (the next 'lower' rating) calls for minimal violence, which I just don't think will work. The difference between these basically comes down to two things: nudity and gore.

The dividing line between rating levels can be a little arbitrary too.

I may have mentioned this before (can't remember) but there was a teen black comedy called "Election" back in the 90's that ran into ratings problems because of an implied oral sex scene.   The initial cut was rated NC-17 at the time.   And, the rating boiled down to the number of times you could see a characters head move up and down to suggest the act.

Most of the first cuts of 80's slasher flicks were rated X on their first submission and they would seem really tame compared to what we see today.

While TV-14 will have some blood and violence, TV-MA will have realistic violence and gore. TV-14 shows will have brief, "tasteful" nudity and implied sexual situations (think side boob and strategic placement of blankets during sex scenes) while TV-MA can include full frontal nudity and more graphic sexual depictions.

I'm hoping for a good dose of it being "realistic" without too much pandering too either blood and violence or sexy fan service.

Personally, I think the creators will head for the TV-MA rating. Violence and psychological terror are integral components of the plot. And, while Robert Jordan was not overly descriptive when it came to sex, the books do contain nudity and sex. Seeing that the trend is toward "Game of Thrones" type realism, I would be very surprised if the show went the other direction.

I actually liked that RJ went a more suggestive approach than other approaches.   A lot of written sex scenes in other books are frankly just bad.   Carrying some of them from page to scene can make them appear almost laughably bad.   The Netflix adaptation of Altered Carbon (which is pretty faithful in its first season) is a good example of this (to me).   The scenes are there in the books, they have a certain bad porn tone, and that tone gets carried over into the series.

There's also a hint of recency bias in conversations about the ratings.  GOT was successful.  This leads us to ask why it was successful which leads us to the sexy bits.  Therefore, we assume that everything that follows will try to do the same things.   But, that can become a recipe for becoming derivative rather quickly and open up the show to the "it's just like GOT" criticism really quickly.

There's a 1970s horror film that was somehow rated PG-13? That had 100% female Full Frontal. (I'm assuming it was rated after the ratings came out?) Took me by surprise....

I think this is it.

From some reports (spoiler about content)

Spoiler

the gore is very graphic in first episode. Whether that means graphic for TV-14 or graphic as in a hard R rated level I do not know)

Couple other things. Almost all ratings by other countries are higher than US, which could mean WoT is mislabelled currently

In the US I have noticed that some of them are rating individual episodes not just the entire season.  That could be happening as well.

I suspect we will see a decent amount of non-sexual nudity and brief nudity in sex scenes, sort of like Bridgerton. The show does have an intimacy coach

There was a lot of gore and nudity happening in the books but RJ's descriptions didn't linger on them, which gave the books a less graphic feel even though if you represented it faithfully it would be very graphic. But there are also ways to play with editing and camera angles and focus to make the same scene look more or less graphic on the screen. I personally hope they don't water down the content but keep the portrayal tasteful like it was in the books.

Is it just male nudity you dislike or nudity in general. Either way I doubt they’re going to GoT levels of nudity.

You know, the only boobs I wanna see are my wifes and the only male butt I'm gonna ever wanna look at is my own (only when necessary mind you). Lol. Just not a fan of stuff like that. Nor am I a fan of gore on screen. But seeing now that it's TV-14 maybe it'll be watchable. I just loved the books so much, hopefully it turns out okay. I was just whining. Lol

Yep, you can do angles and such without it being super graphic.  I hope it's something I can watch with my 14  year old, not something that's adult-only.

My wife just got into GoT this year and has watched it a few times.  On rewatching with her I find alot of the nude scenes to be obviously shoehorned in some T and A.  Some were good for tone setting but I think show would have been better over all if it had used it more strategically.  Especially some of the Dany scenes felt like hey got to Emilia naked.  I hope we only see nudity as part of culture building and bit of relationship suggestion.  I am fine with old standard well placed covers.

Keeping the violence as realistic as possible is more important to me.  This story is an innocence to wisdom story through war and conflict at its heart.  The ability to stay human as we face the churn of great powers grinding us.
