Recent A Memory of Light News

JenniferL

Over the last several months, there have been many exciting announcements about A Memory of Light, the highly anticipated final volume in The Wheel of Time series. In case you've missed our previous coverage, here's what we know so far.

Brandon Sanderson finished the first draft of the book on December 21st, 2011. It was immediately turned over to Team Jordan for review. Brandon anticipates needing at least a dozen drafts before the book is ready for publication.

Tor announced that the hardcover and audiobook releases will be on January 8th, 2013. The eBook release will be April 9th. If Tor follows their usual pattern, the paperback mass market release will be approximately one year after the hardcover release.

We anticipate that Brandon and Harriet McDougal will both go on a signing tour for the hardcover release, however no cities have been announced yet.

Also in December, series artist Darrell K. Sweet passed away, leaving the cover art for A Memory of Light unfinished. You can view his draft on our A Memory of Light info page.

Michael Whelan was announced as Mr. Sweet's replacement. More info about Mr. Whelan's cover can be found here. Tor.com has posted the full cover, as well as notes from Whelan on the process and some of his rough sketches.

Orbit Books, the UK publisher who publishes the WoT books, has also released their cover.

At this year's JordanCon, Harriet read to us a portion of the prologue of A Memory of Light. While no recordings were allowed, Tor and the Jordan estate have graciously allowed us to reprint the text of the preview. If Tor follows their usual pattern, there will be an eBook version of the complete prologue available for purchase sometime between now and the release date. Orbit has also released the jacket text for the book. We believe the same text will appear on the US editions as well. We have reprinted the text here for your convenience:

And it came to pass in those days, as it had come before and would come again, that the Dark lay heavy on the land and weighed down the hearts of men, and the green things failed, and hope died.’ From Charal Drianaan te Calamon, The Cycle of the Dragon.

In the Field of Merrilor the rulers of the nations gather to join behind Rand al’Thor, or to stop him from his plan to break the seals on the Dark One’s prison – which may be a sign of his madness, or the last hope of humankind. Egwene, the Amyrlin Seat, leans toward the former.

In Andor, the Trollocs seize Caemlyn.

In the wolf dream, Perrin Aybara battles Slayer.

Approaching Ebou Dar, Mat Cauthon plans to visit his wife Tuon, now Fortuona, Empress of the Seanchan.

All humanity is in peril – and the outcome will be decided in Shayol Ghul itself. The Wheel is turning, and the Age is coming to its end. The Last Battle will determine the fate of the world.. For twenty years The Wheel of Time has enthralled more than forty million readers in over thirty-two languages. A MEMORY OF LIGHT brings this majestic fantasy creation to its richly satisfying conclusion.

Working from notes and partials left by Robert Jordan when he died in 2007, and consulting with Jordan’s widow, who edited all of Jordan’s books, established fantasy writer Brandon Sanderson has recreated the vision Jordan left behind.

I am still disappointed about the delay in the ebook release. Delaying the digital release only increases piracy and robs Team Jordan and TOR of some ebook sales.

I can't wait for this, although I will be sad when its all over. Robert Jordan created something special and allowed us into that world, for that I am forever grateful, thank you Sir.

Just reading any news now about AMoL, chokes me up. When I actually sit down to read it I'll be a 36 year old man bawling with a book in his hands. Started the series when I was 14. WOT for a while has been in my life longer than it wasn't.

Though I understand its what is usually done, The Ebook should be released at the same time not later. Anyone who wants to buy the hardback will buy it even if the ebook is out. I for one know that I will be buying both ebook and hardback.

I'm sad that I didn't find this 20 years ago. I started it a year ago and missed out on all the anticipation of the news books.

Yes - but at least you haven't had to have all the waiting! The anticipation over all these years (I started at around 14 as well, after book 5 came out) has been almost unbearable!

Part of the reason I will be sad is that the books were with me for such a long period. I'm going to feel as the the end of an era in my life is closing. Its just not the actual book I'm going to reflect on, but all the places and times in my life when I read it. I'm going to flash back to being 14 and reading TEotW and then pestering my parents to read it too. I'll be transported back to the end of bootcamp in Orlando Florida, where I got a copy of Lord of Chaos and it took up just about all the space in a tiny personal locker I had available to me.

Been having fun, sort of. Trying to find an online book seller, in the UK, that can guarantee delivery on publication date. Nothing so far. So will most liekly have to get up early and get on the bus into the main town 40 minutes away to get my sweatly hands on it. Then cry, as it will be almost over.

Like a lot of people I am very excited about A Memory of Light and look forward to reading the book when it comes out in 2013! However, I do have a positive complaint and I will express myself one more time on dragonmount and then I will not say it again at least on this above named website! I do not want to try and predict events in AMOL like I have seen on some other websites though I guess alot of people are really stoked up about AMOL, and so am I for that matter! My major complaint is that TOR seems to want to make AMOL into a OVERBOARD money marketing campaign!!

I know AMOL is supposed to be the last main volume of TWOT series and I can understand and even relate to a certain extent about the fact that we have seen the artwork, which looks pretty decent-like how Tor puts on the dustjacket-THE FINAL VOLUME OF THE WHEEL OF TIME-in the UPPER right corner of the cover. Well ok they WANT to make the book look special in turn it seems kind of corny compared to the previous books in TWOT series like e.g. LOC is book six of TWOT which is what it says on all TWOT books etc.-or most of them anyway!

Customers put the money in book publishers pockets, not the other way around! Still I could live with and accept these changes if I absolutely had to! And to me it is the story-not so much the text or even minor errors-that I look forward to the most whenever AMOL comes out!

Wishing everyone a happy and hopefull cool summer! Thanks for the updates everybody!!

Yes--as mentioned above, the eBook will be released April 9th, 2013. I'm sure you'd be able to get it from Amazon.

Hello all

I quit reading after Path of Daggers, because the interminable wait between books was driving me bananas. Same thing with Song of Ice and Fire. I've been buying them as they've come out, but they're sitting on the shelf, unread. And in six months I can finally sit down and read the whole thing in one long sitting. FINALLY!!! Thank you Mr. Sanderson!

And on a final note, that artwork by Michael Whelan is marvelous! I've never been a fan of Mr. Sweet's work (his human anatomy leaves a bit to be desired, truthfully. Great horses, but not so good with humans. Rand's arm on the cover of The Gathering Storm needs some forshortening attention), and I think they did a fantastic job with getting Mr. Whelan to send off the series properly.

Finally! Bood and bloody ashes the wait has been long! I was glad I came across this series four years ago, via a teacher who would me a new book in the series every couple of days during my last semester with her, and was sad to find out she didn't have past book 10. That's when I found out this great man had died before his epic and triumphant saga was finished. I was sad but I was consoled when mr. Sarandon took it up.

The last book is almost here and I have started the series all over again in anticipation. Oh and I completely agree with severian I will always remember mr. Sweets work but mr. whelan has done a magnificent job on the cover putting a beautiful cap on what I believe will be a great piece of work.

My very first principial said he cried when he finished The Lord of the Rings. I hope I will cry when I finish The Wheel of Time.

Twenty-plus years for me, too. And the other good thing for those who picked up the series later; you didn't have to wait for a book that was disappointing (Book Ten, the nadir of the series) and let us hope you never will. (Please Book Fourteen, be good, be good, be good, please, please, please, please, please....)

While I am waiting for January 8, 2013, my wife is somewhere in book 9 or 10 and my14 years old younger son is reading the Eye of the World, which I see as a great parental achievement. In our time, fewer and fewer people believe in difference between good and evil as each day passes. I wonder if the actual goal of the Dark One is to erase this difference, so that anyone could have an excuse to hurt other people? The Wheel of Time brings some light back to us.
