Tbf Dave was catching a bit of attention early on that seemed to taper off. Not a lot of people voted him but he was mentioned a bit

Tress: thanks, held to see where you stand. You actually gave the most players in your list and that helps a lot.

Basically I liked your post.

The reason I can't get that behind a David lynch is because the trajectory of his play has been the following:

"Hey guys, nice to meet you."

"I'm going to try and find my footing here and have a bit of fun."

"God damn I'm catching a bit of heat I better say I was joking to make it clear."

"My ass is basically now on fire. I've got to retaliate and show them I'm not gonna be shoved around even if what I'm saying doesn't make coherent sense. Non chalant mode engaged."

"Okay, we seem to have come to some sort of agreement somehow. Time to be a bit aloof."

"Cool."

It was more awkward than something that was going to super ping my scumdar. This has happened to new visitors again and again, albeit a few details changed, on DM because they're the first people everyone jumps on because people aren't familiar with them. If I read his posts from a standpoint of "nervous returning character" then I can buy all the shit that he's saying whereas if I read it as scum then some of it is just wtf.

Did you mean to say the reason you "can" get behind a David lynch.  Because that synopsis makes his play look gross.

FWIW - I'm a visitor here too.  David has pinged numerous times and has nothing to do with him being new...I didnt know that.  And I'm not sure how many votes he had at his pinnacle but would you really define it as; "my ass is basically on fire".  I dont recall that type of heat.

Weird post and another effort to call someone town.  lmfao

I pretty sure like a quarter of this game has been dedicated to calling him out on one thing or another. I want to move onto something else. No, it's the reason I cannot. I put myself in his shoes and can make sense of his posts and I mean his play was bad but if I don't think he's scum then should I still want to lynch him? Not really imo, but I think we disagree on that.

POE = Process of Elimination

D1, zero info but we're using POE?

This is clearly going to take some adjusting.

Think of it this way. Players tend to find people they think are towny and then begin to pressure those they do not. It's not as ineffective as you may think. Obviously it's early in the game and blah blah but it tends to work out alright in the long run. What Shad was saying is that when townies are active and posting, being open with their thought process and reads it's harder for scum to lay low in that sort of environment.

Posted

mr booboo who do you want to lynch. Also do you distinguish between someone playing bad and playing scummy? Or are both equally lynchable qualities for you?

You make that sound like the only correct way is your way, which is not true.  JiF has been playing his way on JN for years, and he's done well.

I think the biggest difference is the amount of subtlety used.  JiF and I both come from a mafia time/place that prefers more subtlety than the way mafia is played now on a lot of sites (POG, MU, etc).

Two routes to the same destination, imo.

I signed up for a second game at JN because I liked it, not because I want to change it.

But I'm going to be a bit defensive when for two straight games strangers show up to tell us how much our playstyle sucks.  I took deserved heat for doing the same in my first JN game.

FWIW - I'm not saying your play style "sucks" here.  Just seems highly inefficient.  I think 60 pages and not a single train probably supports that thought...but all good, I'll leave it alone.  I wasnt trying to be all preachy. Just trying to figure out why the tendency is town hunt rather than scum hunt and why you guys thinks it effective.

I'm not entirely sure a DPR game is a good example of why the "new DM" playstyle has become the norm here, just sayin'.  There are mechanics to be considered with this game that makes a 60 page D1 with no serious trains not entirely useless, all told.

It's a different approach than when I started playing, to be sure... it seems to work well for me with my personality type, I'm a much more intuitive player and in order to spend a lot less time analyzing post by post early on (some of the older players may remember my Giant Spreadsheet of Doom) I have forced myself to sort the field by gut feelings and then get into more detail the people I'm less likely to think are town.  Once the field narrows, I spend a lot more time in ISO for everyone, even the ones I felt good about D1.

Posted

Ftr I'm not bothered by BooBoo's approach here. I think JN players tend to be more cut and dry when it comes to scum hunting so bad Town play probably gets lynched as often as scum does?

Just my theory.

I have a plan.

If we can't find a wolf by EoD we lynch Nolder.

unvote, vote Shad

A little late in the game for joke votes when you've done nothing, wouldn't you say?

It's not a joke.

But my 2c on the whole thing is while I think Town hunting and forming cores is effective, it's doubly so when people are actually throwing votes on their suspects.

Use it like a sword and we will rid this village of the vile demon horde :swordemojithing:

In case people want to get some clarification on my playstyle: firstly I'm town. Sometimes I comment to fish for reactions. Since I have a certain role, I'm trying to find hints for who else has roles that are relevant to me in the game.

And I do like to joke/troll to frustrate you guys :birgitte:

Yeah, definitely happy here. Rereading David, I caught these. These two posts, paired, read as Symp.

Calling him out and voting for him are totally different.  You dont get heat from people mentioning you IMO.  Heat is when you're like, oh snit!  I'm about to be lynched.   All good, I get your rationale just definitely see it different.

Ahh, but we don't have ZERO info.

We have the info that is in our role PMs.

For some games that means more than others.  For some people in this game it may mean more than others.  Alignment doesn't necessarily follow, mind you, but there is actually some interesting stuff in this D1.

I could go on...but I really dont want to.  Lets play the game.  I'm a visitor, this how you guys roll...61 pages of nothing would argue otherwise but it's all good.  I'm here and I'll adapt the best I can.

Not necessarily. It's a DPR game and things are not often as they seem. Meaning sometimes there are mechanics we're not aware of and can help town. For insurance the last one I played if town rushed days then scum was at a disadvantage. We didn't know that though. So since overall David isn't giving me a scummy vibe I'm not willing to vote there.

Leelou and Verbal I'd like to know where you are at with thoughts as well. Everyone really but you've both been around. Verb has more content but is like a recent thoughts or reads list please.

I've read the game, I'll say that. I have not, however, paid enough attention to the game that I can form a reads list yet. It has been a long time since I played a game with this many players, so I'm actually kinda hoping bodies hit the floor over this next phase or two and thin the herd out.

THEN I'm prepared to go ham. Until then, I have a few soft town reads (Dice, Darthe) and everybody else is WTL. That said, I might not want to lynch Hermes (I did at first) - his explanations have seemed to come from a townie POV.

I have no time to shift through what is spam and what is not at the moment. I am working on a decent sized project at work that involves how we will be reallocating our work. My vote is a real vote though, that's all I've got for now.
