Help With An Experiment?

It'll be for a game I run in the Aiel in October as a part of Aiel Hallow's Eve.

I wanted to somehow have "ghosts" as that is the theme of Aiel Hallow's Eve this year but not in the case of some games I've played (someone is lynched or NKed, they become a ghost who can talk but not vote, from there they can either be resurrected and can vote again or exorcised and are dead dead). Then it occurred to me as I am watching the HP game that I have an impulse to post in the game but I can't because I'm not actually a player.

Then it occurred to me that some sort of semi-omniscient non-voting voice would be a really good ghost role... What if there were multiple ghosts, and no one knew how the ghosts were aligned so who knows if you could trust them or not?!?!?

From here all sorts of ideas spring up about roles that could potentially commune more exclusively with the ghosts, how much each ghost would know and how set their alignment is, etc etc.

And I figured this was a case where I probably should consult someone else to just make sure I balance things right and put the correct guidelines in place.

Also just wanted to kind of see whether this was a game people would be interested in playing

So yeah if you're interested in helping iron out the idea, post here (note I'd not let you play--you'd know too much). If you'd be interested in playing, also post here just so I know there's interest :P

I like the cut of your jib.

I'd like to either brainstorm ideas for the ghosts or actually be a ghost.

I'm feeling a little overwhelmed with what I got going on right now as far as actual mafia so I don't want to play or work on the actual setup if that's ok.

Even though it's an idea for 2-3 months from now?

o_O  I've been thinking something almost identical to this over the past few days.  I wanted to do an ogier game where every town player becomes a tree stump upon death and stumps can be regrown to serve either faction, infested to argue in favor of the mafia team, uprooted to be fully eliminated.  So yeah, I definitely want to see where this goes because I might borrow heavily from it one day.

Eld, you DO know you can edit non-mafia threads, right? :P

Only those "in the game" could vote, but my plan is to have a certain number of ghosts as well, and to have some sort of restriction on either what they know or what they can say or both.

And also note that there is a while until this game is going to take place. Just wanted to post about it when the ideas for it where flowing through my head.

Ooooooo that's more like the "classic" ghost games, but I absolutely love your spin on it!

The biggest problem with games like this is when ghosts have a known alignment or are at least non-scum, because the default for non-players is to try to figure out the game. That means the ghosts become very much like unkillable, nonvoting innocent children - a source of objective pro-town analysis the mafia can't shut up or throw dirt on. Fooling the ghosts becomes the only way the mafia can win, and townies tend to sheep them if there's a good player there.

Unless your setup has a way to deal with that, don't run a ghost game. Feel free to pm me the setup for review if you want am opinion on it

I'm pretty sure I'm booked up for the next 2-3 months.

I could be wrong but eh.

Good point. I would give mafia a way to banish ghosts. Or maybe a ghost SK with a win con of killing all ghosts. Or something.

Always wanted to give the dead thread a collective voice/power they could use to influence the game. Might be worth trying here.

What if you started the game with ghosts instead of players turning into ghosts?  They would have alignments just like the players and the ghosts had a vote, but all of them together only had one vote?  They could vote in a different color or something.  Would be sort of like a game within a game.  Just a thought :).

I also like Darthe's idea, as long as the DT is spoiler free - ha.

My plan was to start the game with ghosts, and I was also thinking that there would be "good" and "evil" ghosts. So the good ghosts would be trying to help the town and the evil ones would be trying to confuse them, and there would maybe be a role or something to be able to tell which is which

I'm also fiddling with how much knowledge I'd give the ghosts. Maybe they'd know they're rooting for town, but only know the identies of two town players and one mafia player and then the ghosts all have a thread where they can chat and they don't know the alignment of each other.

Like I said, a lot of idea spinning right now

So they'd collectively vote on what their one combined game vote would be?

Whatever you do you should give at least some of the ghosts post restrictions IMO.

Make them characters. Like the guy who lost his head, the woman who fell beneath the ice and drowned, the old lady hit by a bus crossing the street, etc.

Yep.  Like they'd need majority to vote on that person and their collective vote would count for one vote against that person.  I hadn't super fleshed it out or anything.  Just throwing out ideas heh.

I was thinking the ghosts maybe couldn't speak or vote but could perform poltergeist like activities and give players PRs or

perhaps curse them with hated status or bless them beloved.

tbh it sounds like it'll splode.

not that there's anything wrong with that but...

Good luck!

and autocorrect hates me.
