Defining DM Mafia Roles and Balance

I'm sorry, Cindy, but this is bugging me. Verbal is a big boy and he can answer for himself. I've floated the idea of 1 game from each category running at a time and I think AJ's (an actual active player in the community) opinion on the matter is helpful.

ok well I'll just shut up and stop giving a rats behind about any of it.

circle the wagons, close the boards to non players, ignore the traffic that spectators bring to the site and carry on.

it's been pretty painful reading lately and dragonmount clearly doesn't want or need my input on a damn thing. it's not like I have any insight just reading every word of every game for the last what three years.

It's all about constructive discussion Cindy. I apologize if I came off wrongly there but I feel you have been staunchly against any new proposal that wouldn't even affect you directly as a primary spectator.

My point centralizes around supply and demand.

The mod queue is long but the player base is shrinking. Limit the amount of games available so we are more or less forced to fill them before another springs up. I think it'll make the process faster and is a pretty good fix for the time being.

I think it might be time to start considering the 4 game rule.

Might be time we limit the Mafia board to 1-2 games in progress with one in sign ups ready to run when one of the other two finish.

Frankly I just don't think we have the player base to run multiple games anymore and I don't like having to choose.

Basic(Standard)/Advanced set ups would be up to the Mod what they wanted to run when they put their sign ups out.

In order to avoid blanking the current waiting lists we could simply swap one-for-one from each until it is cleared then create just one mod cue

I don't have a problem with either of these ideas.  If people are interested in reducing the # of games run at once, then I'm cool with tweaking.  The idea about the queues is pretty reasonable.  The only issue is this:  if we went to 1 queue, how do we avoid a scenario where every mod runs an Advanced game and nobody gets to play Basic ones anymore??  If we go to 1 Standard/Basic and 1 Advanced at a time, that would probably work better and avoid people not having a game type available that they want to play.

I'm open to suggestions on this.

Just throwing this out there, I'd be ok with letting everything go and trying a wild west approach too.

Get rid of a queue altogether, get rid of official rules and limits on who can run what and when.

I know that scares people but eh what's the worst that could happen really?

Nuclear war?

But seriously, I don't think getting rid of all the structure would be a good idea.  You'd probably just get too many people running games.  And people might not want to play games from mods they don't know.  Queues are cool in that everyone gets a chance.  Although something needs to be done about the wait time.

I think it would help cut back on time for sign ups if there weren't as many games running. Although, mods should be able to tweak for smaller participation or start with a smaller game and have other roles to add on but already have it balanced for a few different options. Like 15/17/20.

Chain Kivam and DPR to desks and have them mod games on an alternating basis.

Do this and I'll make you an Admin.

Maybe. It was just an idea. I don't mind if no one wants to try it.

Wow. All this and I haven't even gotten in to Natural Action Resolution.

I won't be imposing that on mods.  If players have questions on how it works, they can either PM the mod or ask on thread.  If people want to add NAR to the same type of roleset you've suggested, then that's cool and up to mods to use or not use.

(which I'm sure is all you're suggesting, but I wanted to be clear that I won't officially change anything to NAR - I think most mods subconsciously use it anyway)

Lol Yates I've been pushing NAR around here for over a year.  Best of luck.

If people are happy to play broken games? Who am I to judge??

I choose people using their heads instead of spoon feeding them information. We're not talking about big things here. Just small things that should be taken into consideration. Even and especially for a newbie.

Playing mafia means not being in control. Trying to force mods into a template takes a big chunk off the game in regards to thought process and theorising. It also robs scum from Wifom opportunities.

I agree - except for intro/newbie games designed to teach people the basic mechanics, which should have open roles (i.e. details known to all), there's no reason for this.  Figuring out how the roles work is part of the balance of a game.

I think it should be standard practice for doctors and roleblockers to not be allowed to target the same player on consecutive nights.

So what you're saying is it should be standard practice for a cop or doc who roleclaims to be dead in a maximum of two nights?
