i've told kaylee as much. it's an interesting mechanic and it has its worth, but it can be very unfun and feel unfair.

it's been used on DM in advanced games since at least 2011, prolly earlier. it's been used less frequently in bastard games. I've only personally seen it in that last, I think, BT basterd game.

 

every time I've seen it used it has been hated by almost everyone. more than cults even.

 

it was used pretty nastily in some ways this game (the ventriloquist having the puppet insult people etc.) but whenever I've seen it used well it was used very much like here, to set up a couple mislynches.

 

it could have been signalled better perhaps but as the mafia was a tommy gang and pushing very hard it was probably over the second he had a victim.

 

after this response I'd guess mods will avoid it more. I very much doubt the mods here expected so much anger and such unwavering resentment for using an unusual role that they've never seen called bastard before.

Mods are welcome to use whatever roles they want. But I wouldn't be interested playing in a game that has this role. I mostly avoid bastard games.

Depends.  TG and I both had a blast when he used it on me lol.  Even if I did get lynched the next day.

FTR - I'm not mad at the mod for including the role. I would NEVER suggest they put the role in just to laugh and troll the player base.

 

I just don't think it's a role that should be considered "normal" even in an advanced game. Obviously, that's just MY opinion, but Nyn has already said basically what I'm thinking. While I don't think the Mods INTENDED this role to be used to troll the player base, that's the effect of the roll and why *I* would consider it bastard.

 

Also, as I think BFG's Discworld Mafia illustrated, I think games with less trickery and fewer out there roles should be the rule rather than the exception because they rely more on player skill. There were no emo break downs in that game and people worked together. When I have to be on the look out for all kinds of crazy off the wall roles, I get paranoid, impatient, and grouchy. I don't think I'm alone in that. So knowing there's at least some role MADDNESS going on upfront would be a big help.

 

That's my rant. Hope I'm not hurting anyone's feelings. I'm really just trying to look at this objectively and not hold anyone responsible so we can use this as a learning tool going forward. I know I plan on modding a game in here if/when I get a chance. I've got notes on stuff like this because I want people to have fun and not go crazy!
