Avast Anti-Virus SUCKS!!!

Recommended Posts

The other day I downloaded the so-called free version of Avast antivirus. Somehow, without me wanting it, it also downloaded a trial version of its "normal" version. This expired after 30 days on Tuesday, and said I could either buy the full version, or pick "uninstall". I picked "uninstall", which then hung my system for about 4 hours, supposedly "uninstalling" itself.

My internet died.

My sister's able to connect with no issues from her laptop (to the same router & all), but I have only "limited access", whatever that might mean. I couldn't get it to reconnect for love or money (we're both wireless).

In desperation, I ran CC Cleaner to clear the system, but no luck. I then ran Avast's free version to see if I might have a virus. It found 2 things and put that in the vault, but suggest that I ran a "start-up check" or something. I said sure, you do that. That was last night at about 5:30. By 11 my computer had still not finished restarting. I force-closed it, and restarted it this morning. It told me a whole load of stuff and said I had to reinstall avast. I clicked yes, it reinstalled the "expired" version, and now at least my computer works, but my internet still doesn't.

BAH!!!

Oh, wow . . . That sucks, Elgee!

I have a free version of Norton that I run.  It's provided for free by Comcast/Xfinity (we have our cable, internet and land line with them).

I also bought malwarebytes and keep it running.

Hubby was looking for a user's manual this past weekend and, although it was free, it wouldn't install unless you agreed to let several other free programs install.  He cancelled the whole thing.  I HATE HATE HATE it when they bundle stuff and force you to download crap.  I'd rather pay a small amount than clutter my computer with PUPs.

I've printed that and will definitely try fixing it that way tonight! Thank you, sweetie *snuggles*

That's what I am worried about too, Taltos. I downloaded the free version of avast (on recommendation of an IT specialist!) on both my and my sister's laptops, and hers is also giving problems.

we have avast and never had any problem with it

I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials for the past 2 years and before that Kaspersky Internet Security. Till now I haven't had a problem with either.

You could give either of the two a try. I got Norton when I bought my laptop and Avast when I got the PC. I'd wait for the trail period to get over, uninstall it and get the Microsoft or Kaspersky.

To add to Xthrax's statement, MIcrosoft Security Essentials is free, and they really picked up their game. While not the best, they are consistently the standard by which new programs are compared, nowadays.

I'm trying to think of something helpful to add, but am being distracted because I keep reading 'avast' in a pirate voice!

Rofl!! Add a "mateys!!" in there *grins*

Well, I tried the suggestion in that link Hiarth gave, but couldn't find anything else to delete.

My next step was to try and create a cable connection again, but I've lost my username and password in the move. I eventually got hold of my service provider (the state run Telkom, "fondly" known as "Hell Con"), who after much struggle and debate generated a new set for me. Now my internet is COMPLETELY DEAD! My sister can't even connect. In the midst of trying to sort THAT out last night, they politely cut the connection (at 7:30pm), saying that business hours are now over, goodbye. Seriously.

AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
