Bloody Games - Flaming Games

So I came to realize that having fun is more important than playing to win.

I came to love the atmosphere of games, some of those are so much fun. I do believe, however, that it might just be not as fun for everyone. As it was mentioned here in one of the newer threads (by Verbal, I believe), there seem to be some problems of playstyles clashing here.

I have seen people being very agressive, bullying, sometimes outright flaming in some games. I think it hurts the atmosphere and it just don't fit.

I think we should discuss this.

^   I agree!  The game is what should be enjoyed, some people get all mean and sassy, they should remember at the end of the day we're just a big ole' group of friends!

Also someone told me I should say nice things to people.

Hey Hally. You're looking good!

Now back on cue. I think some of us just don't know one another intimately enough to be openly trolling, flaming, being mean to one another.

I can troll someone I know well cause I know they wouldn't take it seriously. I can even insult them during the game if we know one another well enough because we have a relation where we know it's a joke and it's a game. But talking smack at people I don't know well enough, well that's just no good cause, y'know, they might just not get it and feel bad and all.

The key to mafia addiction is managing to do BOTH at the same time.

I wonder who that was Csarmageddon?

I would agree.  It's sometimes a matter of knowing the person.  Plus I'm a tender person, I don't like aggression

Yuuuuupp. I like to either troll or play a pleasant game.  Challenge and aggressive competition doesn't equate to aggressive or negative attitude imo.  Get's me fed up.

Albeit, I get HOT over inactivity.  I have been livid before  :flamingsword:  :flamingsword:  :flamingsword:  with people not playing the game they signed up for.

People get mad at me when I get mad about activity, but I urge you all once again to think about that.

When we play a game of mafia we're all in essence agreeing to take time to sit down and play together. It's no different than if we sat down at a table to play monopoly. Mafia cannot work properly if people are inactive just like monopoly cannot be played if we're always waiting for someone to take their turn but they're in the other room doing something else. When you're inactive you're responsible for ruining the experience of everyone you signed up to play with not to mention the mod who has to worry about replacing or modkilling. It is rude all around. Now I've gotten into it with several people before and I've heard everything from busy with work to chronic illness to kids and back again. If something comes up, it's ok that happens to everyone at some point. But when it is something you can take into account and you know about well before hand then I get mad. Really, I am sorry you are too busy with work or with kids or with your illness or whatever else it is but these are things you know about. If you don't have the time then don't sign up to play mafia it's that simple. But you like mafia and want to play it, I hear you saying. Well in all honesty, too bad. That's being selfish and rude to others as I've explained before. When I know I wont have time to play mafia I work my schedule around and don't join new games, inform games I'm in, ask for replacements, etc. I don't see other people do this very often. Instead they just disappear and we find out a week later they went on vacation or whatever. Like really people. Again think about why I am angry here. I don't want to be and it's not because I dislike any of you. Just because we're playing a game online doesn't mean you can put us on the backburner whenever you feel like it. You made a commitment and I think it would be nice if more people started taking that commitment seriously.

What I've said above in conjunction with people joining multiple games at once irritates me.

Two is ok I guess, maybe even three if they have a LOT of free time. But when I see people join every signup games....

WTF there is no way you have the time to properly devote to all these games. You may think you do, you may even be able to juggle it functionally.

But I guarantee if you played in one game at a time people your gameplay would improve dramatically. You wont be stressed about rereading and making cases against two dozen people. You wont get games confused. You wont feel rushed or left behind. Really it's a nice feeling and I think some of you could really benefit from it.

I'll add to that.  We all know people who contribute SIGNIFICANTLY less than they should and do so consistently.  That is inexcusable in a game that relies on player interaction to function.  I'm going hard on them for all of my future games whether that is a standardized thing or not.

if you cared about DM you'd have broken that into more posts :)

if you cared about my eyes you'd have at least tried paragraphs.

I'm a little hyperactive.

I post more post game than some ppl post in game.

but you would change the quirky, eccentric, eclectic nature of DM mafia were you to try to enforce activity levels.

some of those haiku like and hit and run posters make me smile.

and the fact that they're hard to read makes games better IMO.

I don't like it when it's easy to read ppl and figure out the game.

work for it babies Bwahahahahahahahahaha...

Well see I have no problem with it if it's just a playstyle.

And you can tell when someone is around and paying attention, but volunteering very little information and someone who is just MIA.

Wombat for example used to do this a LOT. He's gotten way better at balancing his act so it's not just frustrating but he still does it to some degree. The way to handle that IMO is in game. If people aren't volunteering enough info, lynch'em. Seriously DM has completely lost sight of the policy lynch and that's really sad because it kept a lot of bad behavior/gameplay in check.

Edit: to be fair, this isn't exactly a new thing.

The policy lynch seemed to be pretty much dead by the time I started playing here.

Perhaps it never really took hold like it did with other mafia communities.

The problem comes in when you're in a game with too MANY of those types of players, and your reads for everyone get muddled because there are so many you either dont have a great read on, or have a scummy read because of coasting when that person is town. You see that enough times and trust me, it starts getting really frustrating.

If it's just a couple of people that are fluffing/coasting, I don't have much of a problem. To be frank, if they're town scum will likely kill them off for town anyways since their NK won't give any info, and if they're scum town will rarely let them coast to the end of the game anyways.

policy lynching is scummy :)

we should just point and laugh

I really don't agree. There are policy lynchings which in the past were dubious and more amateurish in nature than anything (see: lynch all liars) but policy lynching itself is a very solid way for a community to self police certain actions it doesn't want players to take.

That would depend on how it sounded to you.

Pretty on point.  A 20 person game with 6 inactives is essentially luck.

I actually get more fed up with people who are constantly bringing the inactivity up of the people they play with than the inactives themselves. I think the mods should deal with the inactivity and let the players just play the game. As for the aggressiveness it's all about knowing the person and understanding when someone is just joking or actually being serious. Communicating with people on a forum is always more difficult than doing so in RL because the biggest part of communication happens through body language, and I think people should take this into consideration when they are making jokes that can be taken as personal by someone else. I rarely see a player deliberately attack someone else on a personal level so I think it's safe to assume that when you are in doubt you should just brush it off as a friendly comment. I don't find anything wrong with the competitive nature of the players here though, and I think that the key to playing a good mafia game is to combine the mentality of playing to win with having fun with the people you play with. In the end it's important to remember that it's just a game and we are all here to have a good time.

My souvra said most of what I was gonna say

But I'll add that people might wanna start rethinking the names they call people. To me, it's a biiiiiig difference if someone says to me "Wth were you thinking, that was a stupid move" VS "Wth were you thinking, that was a stupid move, you retard". The first, while aggressive, is strictly game-related. The second, is getting personal. The second you start calling people names "you are daft" "you're a monkey throwing poop", "you're stupid", it's gotten too far. Always keep it game-related; personally I say it's completly fine to disagree with someone's play, but keep it to that particular game. I've seen some instances lately where people take their aggresiveness towards another player with them 3-4 games in a row; it's nothing in that particular game, but a general attitude towards another player. And that makes for a bad enviroment all around. Stop it with the name-calling and bitching at the same people game after game.
