Defining A Role: Traitor and Symp

There are a couple roles with a couple variants that I think are all pretty different that we see a lot and tend to share names/definitions.

I think we should try to clear up what's what.

Role: Player wins with the mafia but is not included in the QT.

Variations

  • Mafia may or may not know about this player
  • Mafia may or may not be able to recruit this player
  • Player may or may not show as innocent to cop investigation
  • Player may or may not know who the mafia is
  • Player may or may not be able to continue play if the main mafia group is killed

Personally this is what I think.

Traitor:

Wins with the mafia.

Can be recruited.

Shows guilty to cops.

If main mafia group is killed before being recruited play continues until the traitor is killed.

Symp:

Wins with the mafia.

Cannot be recruited.

Shows innocent to cops.

If main mafia group is killed the game ends.

The mafia and/or the player knowing who the other is should be on a case by case basis as determined by balance.

Thoughts on this?

I agree with everything except the symp part of winning.  If main mafia group is dead, the game should end.  If not, you turn a symp into a GF, which is not balanced (especially if a GF already existed and died, which would screw the town).

I would consider the win condition part backwards. Imo a traitor lives on to carry the team but they can always be viewed as mafia. A symp that is unrecruited loses if the main faction is gone.

I agree. I mixed them up lol.

My bad.

I dunno.  I agree, a Symp basically becomes a GF if everyone else is dead, but the symp also has the chance of being killed by the mafia with these rules. ((Im assuming if the kill hits the traitor he is recruited and since the symp cant be recruited he would be killed.))

Some mods operate that way yeah. Others give the mafia a "searching" power which is secondary to the kill.

That really depends on the mod I think.

I see that my "symp" in the last BT game was actually a traitor. lol

I dunno.

I'm just trying to get some kind of consensus on which role is which.

These are just my opinions.

If the traitor has yet to be recruited, then I'd say the game ends when mafia team is gone.  Only if recruited does he remain as the solo mafia and game continues.

Is there a list of common terms I should be looking at? I see a glossary on mafiascum, but I'm not sure what to look for? How can a player be recruited to the mafia's side?

So far I need to look up: miller, gf, lover, godfather. I presume there are a bunch more?

Start in this thread...expand from there.

Generally I had always thought the Symp would show guilty to Cops and was also recruitable by the Mafia. If unrecruited the game would still continue even if the main Mafia team was eliminated.

Nolder did you grab these off the Wiki or are these your personal interpretations of the roles?

Personal interpretations after experiencing the role in different ways with different names.

The two most common names were Traitor and Sympathizer and the variants I've included as well although sometimes they were also mixed with a "spy" type role where the player could investigate the town until they were recruited.

You have to keep in mind mafia as you know it is a fan game that has evolved over time.

Everything you see is just player created.
