Basically. It's too small to do a great deal, but its enough to make anyone thinking of causing trouble to think twice. I go to one of the biggest party schools in the country (though I don't get involved in that side of life) and drunk people can be dangerous. In addition, rapes do happen on my campus. So I started carrying a knife when I was walking across campus alone at night (which only lasted until my guy friends found out :P ) and I just kept in the habit just in case? 

It also comes in handy when I'm knitting and need to cut yarn and there are no scissors around :P
