Huge Mafia

I have been playing Mafia for a number of years, in various places. I had in mind a huge WoT themed Mafia but, I never had a site with enough players, especially enough who were familiar with the lore. The Mafia is designed for 60 players, but it scales down to 45. I have run it with an even larger scale down in most places, due to theme and player limitations, and I figured here might have enough interested people to run it. Everyone in the game gets a role with a power. Some powers are better than others of course, you can't all be vig/cop/doctor gods obviously. There are 60 individual roles among 6 factions plus an independent group, with 3 roles, indies aren't allies, unless they want to I guess. Each faction has a separate goal, although some factions possess mutually achievable win conditions. I did submit a request to the advanced game queue, but before I finish updating the set up and send in a fancy design document, I was wondering both if this forum has enough players to play the game, and if people are interested. I suppose you would call it a "kitchen sink" game based on the stickies.

The main reason I made this is that it would be pointless to discuss with the committee all the little details if there aren't even enough player to play. So would you guys consider playing such a game?

A list of comments I usually receive:

Too many people, unwieldy communication(factions function like masons, which makes it somewhat easier)

Too many roles is hard to balance(most roles are low level like watcher, 1 shot vig, tracker, hider, doctor, role cop)

Too long a timetable(there are a lot of kills per day, basically there are 1 or 2 lynches, Seanchan and Shadow both have a kill per day, roles with kill powers)

That's huge. I'm not sure if we could field that many active players. I ran a 37 player WoT game in Shayol Ghul a while back though. Still, I would love to see that game happen and would love to play in it.

Honestly one of the few places I could be sure of a player base is mafiascum or something and they won't be familiar enough with the lore. Plus mafia scum people are pretty jerky and would try really hard to game the system.

And game days would take weeks >.<

Well in some mafia scum inspired games I've played D1 lasted up to 1 month. But I was thinking of restricting the game day to a week tops. And with so many kills it wouldn't take more than 15 days I think. Unless doctor and roleblocker roles did well.

1 month D:

9 man game. The reason days take so long, and actually hosts set 1 month as a deadline or else it can be worse, is because its L# style majority lynch and people are obsessed with the idea that D1 makes a great time to actually catch mafia players. I did once drop 300 posts in 3 days and make them end the day in 3 days, of course it was because they lynched me unanimously, but it was so worth it.

D1 is a good time to catch mafia, but there's only so much you can do before you need to move on.

Well, these people refuse to move on. D1 is easier if you have meta info on the other players in the game, but just randomly some people have scum tells that they keep regardless of their alignment.

In any case I think we are getting off topic :)

Hopefully more people post that they are interested.

last year i ran a 40 player Mafia, and thsi was back in DM7.0 and we had alot more of an active player pool and alot more games goign on at once. even then i had to replace and MK more players than i liked and the game lasted a month and 1/2.

i'd suggest really trying to trim it back to maybe 30 players tops. even then, you see games running now that has that player number and their going slower than we'd all like.

so comming from both the experience of attempting to run a huge game and as a player that has been playing for a while on this board; i'd say you need to seriously think about condensing the size.

on the other hand, we'd love more mods and players on this board. bring some of your friends over and jump in on the mod que; more active players is the only way we can hope to play and awesome game like that.

I could maybe get like 5 people from a given site over here for my mafia, but they wouldn't stay because they have their own mafia games and don't care about WoT. I might be able to get 5 more from various other sites.

Anything below 45 really detracts from the purpose of the game design. I expect a death rate of 3-5 players a day. And the 2 factions which need to obtain a total majority have 15 and 7 players respectively.

Here are the win conditions:

Shadow: 15 Players| have 100% of the live players in your faction

Seanchan: 9 Players| have 50% of the live players in your faction, no remaining Shadow

Tower: 8 Players| no remaining Shadow, no remaining Salidar, no remaining Seanchan

Salidar: 8 Players| no remaining Shadow, no remaining Tower, no remaining Seanchan

Children: 5 Players| no remaining Shadow, no more than 3 players in factions besides Dragon, Rand/Perrin/Mat/Elayne/Nynaeve must die

Dragon: 13 Players| no remaining Shadow

Mazrim Taim: 1 Player| have no more than 3 players in all remaining factions, the dark one and rand al'thor must die

Padan Fain: 1 Player| no remaining Shadow, no remaining Children, Rand/Perrin/Mat must die

the problem isn't getting people to sign up, it's keeping them active and participating Cauthon. in my 40 player game everyone had a role as well, so i know what i'm talking about when i say that even a 45 player game is likely pushing it with the status right now on DM.

also DM isn't just about WoT, so no fear in that  the Social Boards on DM deals with a very broad range of topics; there is literally a place here for everyone, i strongly encourage you to take a look around the SG's as well

and i'm sure they'll be more than welcome to not only bring their set ups here, but also to play in the various games as well. we always welcome new blood over here in DM, especailly for the Mafia games. helps keep them fresh and keep players from getting burned out too much. and trust me, mafia Games will never be in short supply on this site, and we have alot of great Mods on here as well ranging anywhere from large games to Fast mini mafias that last on average a week.

i'm not knocking your set up; i just don't think DM currently has the player compacity to do the game justice. i could be wrong, but thats my honest opinion

multiple faction games are always brilliant. especially if you do like Aemon's Gang War mafia and allow a free for all off thread communitcation wise; or like Mynd's Heroes mafia where people were on multiple teams and stuff.

i mean Kivam's GoT game had alot of people in it and was ultra active, but majority of those players were from JN. come to think of it, you might want to look into Jet Nation. i don't play there, but others do. they might have the player compacity for this game at 60; they'd certiantly be an active enough bunch, all be it very rowdy as well . they were a fun bunch to play with though, learned alot from the experience.

Posted

Some players from my current primary site are too busy or don't like large games. Could anyone here convince JN players to come here for this one game? As a random person I doubt I could convince them.

I was thinking at some point I might want to set this game style as distinct from Mafia because the lynch and the thread are much less important. In any case, the game is too complex and stylized to drop below 45 effectively. I will wait and see how many people want to play and if any JN people want in.

Posted

Idk, JN players like small games and don't really care one way or another about WoT. I doubt that avenue will yield much but it could always be tried.

Posted

I'd so be game for this. We'd need to scramble each and every last active mafia player around though. I wish we had the numbers to make it work.

Could some of the JN people be specifically invited, like the GoT game?

Wombat, how many people ended up getting replaced in your game? I remember it was a ton.

Posted

It sounds like a very fun game. I also have some doubt if enough people would be available to play. Heck the current game is 24 players and there have been a few replacements already.

Posted

I'm in the midst of running a 24-player game (the one mentioned above) which is considered quite large for DM and i am now looking for my 7th replacement - are you interested? LOL

Anyway i would love to be involved in the game you are suggesting if it goes ahead.

The absolute minimum for viability of the set up is probably 45 without dropping factions and what not. Would it be better to wait till after the holidays? You guys currently have 2 separate games running, or do you have more? Do you think you could get otherwise non mafia dragonmount members to play?

Ama do you mean me? I just died in my current TAO mafia game, so I can replace if you like.

a few of the social groups have games running in them currently, but no right now what you see is what you get player base wise and activity wise for DM mafia. holidays have dampered activity a bit, but not much.

I dug around the web for WoT fan forums but there are only like 2 with relatively large user bases, and i mean relatively. So it doesn't look like there is any other place to ask for people to play.

Sounds interesting. I'd play. Hopefully not be involved in any other games during that time as this one sounds like it will be busy heh.
