What Mafia Does For Me

I just wanted to take some time to talk about the positive things that come from playing mafia

I know we complain about it a lot but we still love it right? What does it do for you?

Personally I feel like I'm able to connect with strangers better. I'm often awkward and shy even on the internet but mafia is that thing that just lets me come out of my shell and interact with people. I also feel like I am a better liar and more able to detect when people are lying to me. There's other stuff too and I'll probably post more later or edit it in but I wanted to make the thread and read other peoples responses too.

Well of course I like it. I like playing games and I love learning new stuff. In the beginning I had a hard time arguing with people but now days it´s hard to offend me. lol It´s a challange to combine logic with intuition.

it's an escape and a way for me to interact with people for me mostly. i've made lots of great friends here on DM because of Mafia.

my favorite part of Mafia is being scum and getting to be evil just to see what type of chaos i can cause. being evil is a very big escape from me since i stopped RPGing as my baddie Agitha *nods*

now if your also talking about Modding, then thats a whole different story. i love EVERYTHING about modding a game, from the birth of the idea, to creating it, to seeing you players enjoy yourselves in it. in all honesty, i've come to enjoy modding and creating games much more than playing in them, and i have more games created than i can tell you about right now  about 10 of them are ready to go and just need me to post their signups :baalzamon:

For me its all about the manipulation, or the search for it. Nothings better than tricking scum into outting themselves or convincing the town you are a fellow townie when scum.

Where else in life can you be a bada** detective or a lying manipulator and get complimented for it?

Playing mafia helps get my confidence up and it pushes me to make decisions and stand by my own thoughts, feelings and opinions. So while its fun, it really helps me to trust my instincts, and teaches me how to be vocal about my thoughts, even when I could be wrong. It helps me to learn how to just jump into conversation with people I don't know and not feel as awkward and restricted and out of place as I would in any other thread, be it serious or spam.

As for Modding..I'm sorry guys, while I'm glad you enjoy my games, I completely and utterly do them for myself. For me the fun in Modding is challenging myself to make an interesting game, for me. Like Red, its in the birth of the idea and taking it through the steps to bring it alive and see it played through. And I'll completely admit that as soon as a game get started its already more than half over for me. Just seeing my idea come together and get out there is the real goal/high point for me. Don't get me wrong, I do hope that my games are well received and I do try to make them fun for you, but when it comes down to it when I make games, I make them for me to enjoy and chances are the Modding side is gonna have a lot more fun than the playing side. In the Horror Movie mafia game Thorkin and I had masons teams who had to find each other..that was so we'd have fun watching you look for each other..no one did find anyone though. In Care Bears there were random triggers through out it just for me to get to through random stuff out at you guys to deal with. I know the little things I through in are usually fun for you to play out, and I'm so glad they are, but really when I make the game I'm looking to entertain myself and make the game as fun for me as I can.

BG i'm totally right there with ya dude :baalzamon:

and Kath, i totally get what you mean. the other thing about Modding i liek is all the behind the scenes, seeing roles interact and watching how people handle different roles. the one thing about desiging a game is that in your mind you kinda think on how the roles wil interact (to gain balance) so you kinda have an idea on how the game will go. what i really love is when the game takes a totally nose dive and turns out completely different from what you expected.

like in my ghost town game when i forsaw the cults being major contenders, competing and wrestling for the souls of the dead.

then they both died a few days in and it was left to the serial killers.... thats the last time i give min a usurper role hehe

That was an interesting experience for me. We got slaughtered and it was mostly by accident. XD

Hmm, so many things that mafia means to me, what it does for me....

I've been playing for a couple of years, I guess, so bear with me if I ramble a bit or something as I try to sort this out. I really try not to. XD

First of all, it's a distraction for me. While I'm playing mafia, I'm not thinking about RL as much and it gives me something to look forward to, to think about while I'm away from the computer, to keep the dull moments from actually being dull.

Another thing I get out of mafia is a brain exercise. I think this is actually what makes it so thrilling for me. I am terrible at analyzing things and using logic to figure things out. When I first started playing, I had no idea what was going on and I had to either pick someone to follow or else just use my gut, which wasn't really all that reliable. XD My first full game I was scum, which I think was great--I got to see how more experienced players look at the game, I got to see how scum can play the game, how they work, and when I was town later on, I had some valuable insight to use. So yeah, brain exercise. Playing mafia has forced me to look closely at what people say, and learn to try and interpret what isn't being explicitly stated as well as what is. I've learned how to scumhunt more effectively (this is a fairly recent thing, actually; I used to be totally useless at it most of the time) and I've learned how to manipulate, lie, and totally fool people into thinking I'm town so they won't kill me. Also, I've had to totally manipulate, lie, and misdirect a former teammate so she wouldn't realize I was cult; that was fun. No, it actually was. It was exhilarating to see how much power words can have. And to sit and spend literally hours on my posts, making sure they said exactly what I wanted them to say....

That's mostly what I get out of it. I love the social interaction and the bonds it creates after the fact, and I love to just tell stories about all my mafia experiences, but mostly the game itself is what I love. Goodness knows I need reasons to spend my time thinking hard. XD
