frayed ends of sanity

since i started reading this series back in 1995 after i finished the shadow rising i always thought and equated rand to a metallica song of this title; the frayed ends of sanity. i have yet to read a book that has changed that opinion, and i have read closely, and more than once every book that has came out since. so now i must recommend that those who purvey this site listen to the lyrics of said song. it only got stronger to me as he got more and more insane, but the next track on that same album is "to live is to die" and with the recent books it makes me crap myself.

I loved reading the books for a first time and playing music. You really attach the song with the story.

 

I attached Sum 41 - Does this look infected songs to the Great hunt and the dragon reborn. even though the songs only fit very partially.

In my mind, the best song I've heard for a WOT character is "

" by Within Temptation. To me, it's the Dark One (and to a somewhat lesser extent Ishamael's) theme music. Queue that up (or at least, that song with a higher quality version) and read Veins of Gold. Epic symphonic metal is awesome to begin with, and this one is pretty much note-perfect for that scene in my opinion.

For me music only really sinks into a book on the first read. Might have to pick a brand new album and try do it again for A Memory of Light.

 

Metallica's Black Album and LOTR The fellowship of the ring are tied because i got both for christmas and i listened whilst reading over and over :P

For me, the most real song was a Metallica song to be honest. Listen to "All Nightmare Long" while thinking about the long chase of Osama Bin Laden. Literally, you cannot find a more on-point song. I truly think they had him specifically in mind when they wrote it. I know this isn't WoT related but many of us long time Metallica fans find their lyrics to be...prophetic to say the least.

Within Temptation has a lot of music that I think works well with the Wheel of Time. Never Ending Story is a great general Wheel of Time song, perfect for the "wind" opening to each book. Iron is a damned good song for Rand as he spirals downwards. Ice Queen makes for a great Lanfear song. So many match up well, it's scary.

the more i read these lyrics with relatively fresh eyes (hadn't really been listing to this album for years before i ran into it and remembered what i had thought about this song) the more it seems to describe to me Rand from the point where he learned he could channel to the point right before or right at his epic moment on dragonmount, with the newer books it just made me crazy, with things like "myself is after me" and the second to last stanza is an excellent description of rand's mind right before his epic moment on dragonmount.

i really am just talking about the lyrics having meaning to the story, not the feeling evoked by the performance. the lyrics by alone if read as a simple poem for frayed ends of sanity describe rand's mind from the point he learns he can channel to a point very near his epiphany. i have listened to these other songs, please read the lyrics that 2riversfan was so awesome to bring to this forum closely. he starts by seeing first he cant hunger for eqwene

at the same time he will never prosper because he must seperate himself from everyone

he fell prey to failure because he cannot succeed at anything else

the next two lines are internal, and he is hardly aware of them at this point. the struggle within, was later clearly triggered again but the candle was already burning at both ends even at the start. and even at the start of the second book he was acting scitzo, unable to trust even his best friends. and of course, for good reason, but still somewhat demented in its way, he wouldn't even accept what he was told about what he was.

 

the lyrics simply go on to describe his mind from book 2 until the end of book 12.

i only noticed the connection in book 4 when he started clearly hearing ltt.

but after once again listening to, and getting a lyric dump to more slowly look at, the match for rand's mind, well it makes me delusional, but that doesn't take much when your as much of a nutcase as i am. but please look closely at the lyrics and think about rand's progress through the series as you do.

I'm glad there are other Metallica with WoT fans out there. I got into Wot right about the same time as I bought M's black album and my first Discman. Now I always listen to Metallica when I read them (i've since brached out to other M albums as well though). They just go so well together.
