Song 183: With A Little Help From My Friends

Two British musical superheavyweights clash in the latest round as Joe Cocker takes on The Beatles.

ORIGINAL: The Beatles

The original comes from the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, released in 1967. The song was written for and sung by drummer, Ringo Starr. It is ranked #304 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

vs.

COVER: Joe Cocker

Joe Cocker's version is probably the most famous version, taking it to the top of the UK charts, as have 2 other groups. It is very different to the original, being slower, longer due to an instrumental, in a different key and different chords.

Song 19: Candle In The Wind

Something slightly different for song 19, as it is a cover by the same artist. Admittedly, there is very little difference in the music, but one needs to look into the lyrics, which I have also linked.

ORIGINAL: Sir Elton John

Released in 1973, the song is in honour of Marilyn Monroe, who died 11 years earlier. The song reached number 11 on the UK charts.

vs.

COVER: Sir Elton John

The cover was more succesful than the original, topping the charts in a score of countries. It was released in 1997, in honour of Diana, Princess of Wales. The lyrics were change to suite Diana.

Song 185: Nothing Compares 2 U

The 20th song sees Prince take on Sinéad O'Connor. Please let me know if you struggle with the videos - for some reason, I am.

ORIGINAL: Prince

Released on the self-titled album The Family by The Family, the song was not released as a single and received little recognition.

vs.

COVER: Sinéad O'Connor

O'Connor recorded her version in 1989, but released in 1990. It received massive success worldwide, topping the chart in a host of countries.

Song 186: I Don't Know What To Do With Myself

Well, I thought this would have been between Dusty Springfield and The White Stripes, but I found out that the original was by Tommy Hunt. So it is The White Stripes taking on Tommy Hunt with the song I Don't Know What To Do With Myself, a song that has proved popular to cover.

ORIGINAL: Tommy Hunt

The original song was released in 1963 by RnB singer Tommy Hunt. It is a Burt Bacharach and Hal David song.

vs.

COVER: The White Stripes

The White Stripes released their cover in 2003 from their Elephant album. Not as successful as Dusty Springfield's version (which reached number 3 in the UK charts), the White Stripes version charted at number 13 in the UK charts. For those interested, it is Kate Moss in the video, which was directed by Sofia Coppola.

Song 187: I Am Feeling Good

I am feeling lazy tonight, so a big thanks to Krak for suggestion this song. The song has been covered by a score of people, including the Hoff and the Pussycat Dolls, but Krak suggested the Muse cover, and that is the one I have taken to challenge Gilbert Price's original.

ORIGINAL: Gilbert Price

The song comes from the 1965 musical The Roar of the Greasepaint—the Smell of the Crowd, and Gilbert Price conquered Broadway as a result! The song was written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse.

COVER: Muse

British alternative rock group Muse are a multi-award winning group. This was Muse's 9th single, released in November 2001 and reached number 24 in the UK charts.

Song 188: Wild Thing

We are heading back to the 1960s, and a song that was covered within the space of 6 months. The cover is definitely more famous than the original, but is it better in your eyes?

ORIGINAL: Jordan Christopher & The Wild Ones

The original was recorded in 1965, and released 6 months before the more famous version by The Troggs.

vs.

COVER: The Troggs

A very successful cover, the song reached number 1 in the US Billboard, and number 2 in the UK charts in 1966.

185: Cover. I didn't even know Prince sang this. He might be doing it better, but he's just too disgusting.

186: Cover. I didn't know either. I don't like either.

187: Cover. The Muse version is really good music.

188: Original. The first one is more interesting. The cover is more catchy.

Song 189: Rehab

Song 189 sees me continue my small tribute to Amy Winehouse, who sadly died on Saturday 23rd July 2011. I have picked two of her songs for "Tune or No Tune", and have picked another one for "Original vs. Cover". I have picked Rehab, with the cover coming from zebrahead.

ORIGINAL: Amy Winehouse

The multi-award winning song was released as the first single from Winehouse's second album Back to Black in 2006. The lyrics are autobiographical, describing the protagonist's drinking habits and refusal to enter rehabilitation clinics. It charted at number 7 in the UK charts in late 2006.

vs.

COVER: zebrahead

The cover comes courtesy of zebrahead, an American punk rap group. From Orange County, California, they fuse elements of pop punk, funk, alternative rock, alternative metal, and rap rock. They have been doing this since 1996. Their version of Rehab featured on their 2009 album Panty Raid, which was an album solely of covers of songs by female artists.

Song 190: Moonlight Shadow

It appears I was destined to use a Mike Oldfield song next! Initially, it was going to be To France, but the covers were too similar to the originals. Instead, I opted for Moonlight Shadow, which I didn't realise he had written and performed. And my cover comes from the Italian spacesynth band Koto.

ORIGINAL: Mike Oldfield and Maggie Reilly

English multi-instrumentalist Mike Oldfield released Moonlight Shadow in May 1983. Vocals were performed by the Scottish singer Maggie Reilly. Moonlight Shadow has proved to be Oldfield's most successful single to date, where it topped various European charts and reached number 4 in the UK.

vs.

COVER: Koto

I wasn't too sure who I was going to use as my cover - Ruslana, who won the Eurovision Song Contest for Ukraine a few years back, Skylark, Groove Coverage or Annie Haslam. Instead, I opted for the Italian spacesynth band Koto, who covered the song as part of their 1990 Plays Synthesizer World Hits album. It is an instrumental version and uses electronic synthesizers.

As I was out last night at a cricket club committee meeting, time to wrap this up.

So both originals won by 2 votes to 0. These were Rehab by Amy Winehouse over zebrahead, and Moonlight Shadow by Mike Oldfield and Maggie Reilly over Cover Koto.

Time for the next two songs!
