it is a lot of QT boards but it would give the new players a better sense of how to play town on their own, I think. Each veteran overseeing 2 new player should be all right, I think. I hope. Hehehe.

that would be awesome to be a mentor, but i dont have the time lol. You know how it is aemon, work for twelve hours, and drive for an hour one way, and your just exhausted by the time you get home. its kinda hard to find the enthusiasm for mafia when your outside all night freezing in North Dakota in the winter time.

But its seriously an awesome idea. superbly thought up.

pretty good, it was all healed up, just slighlty crooked, and then i fell on it about two weeks ao and cracked it. it swelled up and started hurting again, but its back to normal now. Get the plate and screws removed in a week. As soon as i go home.

How are u doing? Did they ever figure out if you could work around invert?

Aemon, why don't you start a thread with your ideas and really get this mentoring thing all in one place? I just think we're getting a number of topics here and it deserves its own thread. It's a really good idea.

And I'm sorry about the job, too. That really is too bad.

We really should wait for Verb to decide what's going on. Plus, he has to consult with DPR.

So, we have at least one plan on how to train newbies, but what about those of us who have developed bad habits? Or whose play style is less active than others?

Hmmm...It's always a good idea to learn and adapt to new strategies and play styles, but I think the point of this thread is to break people away from the lurking or sporadic post lay style. We want dynamic faster paced games. We will never reach the level of JetNation (thank god. that is too fast for me) but we do want the game to move along.

See, I've been thinking about this a lot, because I'm wondering if I really need to try and change the way I play. I've never had an incredibly active playstyle; I liked to post a lot but necessarily anything of much susbstance because then I didn't draw attention...either from town if I was mafia, or from mafia if I was town. And, to that end, it has always worked for me. I tend to live a pretty long time in games, whether I'm town or mafia. In fact, in most of my games I live to endgame.

And I should note, I may not have posted a lot, or at least, I may not have added much all the time, but I was always into the game. I'd check in for new posts in a game about 10 times a day. I just didn't post every time I checked in, which I'm starting to realize is what some people do. That's very different for me.

And back when mafia was more active here on DM, this never really seemed to be a problem. Other players never really called me out for being inactive, and it worked for me. But now that we're having such a problem with being inactive, I feel like I need to try and jump in more - to have one less 'inactive' person in the game, and to show newbies that they shouldn't be learning to not post very often in a game, or not to post much of substance.

Of course, I kind of have been trying to be more active lately and it's getting me killed all over the place; I've been killed in 3 games this week alone. Which kind of puts a damper on things :/

That's exactly what I've started doing - staying quiet to stay alive. Unfortunately, a lot of people have, it seems. That's the biggest part of the problem. We need to promote the idea that winning isn't fun if you don't really play. And model it.

Posted

I agree on both counts. I tend to be a little quieter until something comes along that I can sink my teeth into - so I understand Alanna's point. I don't think we need to necessarily be instructing new players that you have to post like crazy in order to be a good player. But like Lily says, people need to understand that overusing lurking as a strategy completely kills a game.

I would suggest that if you're going to coach new players, try to help them develop their own individual play styles - emphasize that it's important to participate but since everything that you post in mafia is under a microscope, encourage them to be thoughtful in what they post and not just run for blood for the sake of being active. Anyhow, I hope that makes sense!

FYI, I have a PM into Wes. Once he and I can chat about a few things, I'll start altering threads and stuff. The training mafia games is a solid idea and will definitely stay. The other types of games and the # at one time might be changing for the better, though.

I would say that whether or not I'm able to chat with Wes, I'll start making small changes and tweaks this week, and then maybe we can start the new training mafia later on this week. Just give Wes and I a little time to chat. Thanks.

Ya'll have to PM me, like Verbalicious did. I check PM's everyday, but I only look at threads evert few days. Thant being said, I'd like to address inactivity...heh

So, my main thought is this: appeal to the DM admin peeps to go ahead and re-name this board DM MAFIA. JN took the plunge, and as we are more famous across the net for our Mafia, there is no reason why we shouldn't. It builds excitement and recognition, and lets outside players know what we are doing.

While you are talking to them, have them restore my mod powers. Sheesh...

As far as games go, it's been a long standing tradition to have a "big game" for experienced/all players, and a "basic game". There is no reson why we can't have a few of each type running at the same time. There never really was... Let the activity build and everyone will be happier.

As far as balcklists, player rules, ghost players, and all else is concerend, keep in mind that it has all been done before. All of it. And in the end, you know what keeps the games going? Excellent modding. Period.

If you want to keep the qulaity of the games up, keep the quality of your mods up. Modding is much, much more than just positing a vote count and a scene. There is not one point that has been brought up that every mod needs to address before their game begins.

Posting a thread onhow to play mafia is boring, and very few people will read it. But requiring a serious, rite-of-passage mod apprenticeship will do wonders. Honestly, I stopped playing because the modding turned into "it's my turn!" and the mods had no idea of what the roles were, how they were intended to interact, or any other rule except to post end of cycle scenes. Sorry, but that's the truth.

If the vet mods want to come up with standards to raise new mods, and keep a private discussion board, that would solve 99% of the problems.

Now, Verb is right about the inactivity. When the boards changed and DM was down for so long, a lot of folks got frustrated and left. But new folks will filter in, and old folks will come back, so the key is just to keep the momentum going.

I'll keep an eye on this thread.
