Songs that make you think of WOT

I'm convinced that the "harps" in WoT are actually lyres. The chapter picture I use as my avatar is used for Thom-the-Gleeman chapters -- it's certainly no harp. Harps are not "strummed," yet Thom and Asmo are always described as doing so. Rand carries Thom's "harp" from Whitebridge to Caemlyn, travelling rough and not knowing when his next meal would be. I think after that journey a harp would be broken, and so would both of Rand's shoulders, haha. Some kinds of lyres are strummed, the instrument tends to be a damn sight smaller and more portable than a harp, and (I can't really say this, I don't have proof) they don't look as delicate or temperamental! Lyres are sometimes called "lyre-harps," too, which also makes me think this. I wish there were other people on the internet who thought this, and who actually know about lyres, so I don't have to speculate by myself. :P

Good call, Majsju, that's a really nice tune, it sounds really WoT-ty to me. :D

Well, I'm no expert when it comes to lyres and other older instruments, but to me that avatar looks more like the bastard child of a zither (body) with strings that could come from a number of instruments, lyre being one of them, though my mind rather goes towards a lute. Though, the limited set of strings could just be a result of wanting pictures that are easy to print.

I could totally see both Asmo and Thom play something like this...

Yes, that's exactly what I think they play. I knew someone who had a thing like my avatar and she called it a lyre, sorry if my terminology was dodgy! I'm terrible at obscure folk instruments. The lady I knew with one of those plucked it rather than stummed and there's a video on YouTube of a strummed and that made me think of it. It sounded very Thom- like to me, if a bit cruder - I could certainly imagine him chanting over it.

  • 2 months later...

I started listening to this band and the books at about the same time.

Sonata Arctica - Broken

It reminds me of Rand/LT and their romantic counterparts.

This is a cool idea for a thread.

I was going to say that one!

Anyway, two more rock songs to add:

Primordial - As Rome Burns

It reminds me of the days before the Last Battle.

And, another Blind Guardian song:

Mordred's Song

It's obviously about Mordred, but it deals with the inability to choose your own fate. It makes me think of Rand :)

"I never wanted to be what they told me to be

Fulfill my fate then I'll be free

God knows how long I've tried to change fate"

If anyone has ever played the game 'Braid' for pc and x-box, the music (and game) is fantastic. It could be played in the WoT setting too, although I don't know how the piano parts would translate to their instruments...

For rock the list goes on...

I could choose the entire repertoire of Blackmore's Night but for the battle at Falme ofcourse there can only be one rocksong: Heaven and Hell

As for non-rock:

I still feel

should fit in there. I read the cleansing scene with this on and it totally helped envision the scene.

...

does always remind me of Rand entering a throne room as The Dragon Reborn.

Probably already posted, but if there's one definite undeniable WOT song

I, too, listen to orchestra or jazz when reading, because it feels more like background music; Pat Metheny, and Hans Zimmer - Jack Sparrow for some climax, especially involving Mat. Somehow, it's his action-theme. :P

Also, Mat's theme in Ebou Dar, is definitely; Tin Pan Alley (Aka Roughest Place in Town) - Stevie Ray Vauhgan.

It has that bluesy feel when Mat and his gang are sitting in the on a bench, hangover. Don't exactly where in the book, but since Ebou Dar I always put this song on when Mats PoV comes up.

I'm glad to know you have good taste in music.

pretty much the theme music for every battle in the stories. Drums monotonously pounding like the quake of spear on Aiel buckler.

An immortal being who controls mankind by pulling their strings through the centuries... ISHAMAEL!!!

"I travel through time and I return to the future. I gather wisdom now lost. I visit again the eternally ancient caves,

before a mighty Emperor thereupon came. Watching the mortals "discovering" my chronicles, guarded

by the old demons, even unknown to me."

Darkthrone - Natassja in eternal sleep

Ode to the lost love of a dark woman... LANFEAR.

PADAN FAIN!

Dark Funeral - The Arrival of Satan's Empire

Thousands of trollocs and shadowspawn spewing forth from the rent earth of the blight. Dreadlords leading the putrid forces of evil storming through the land. The blood of Galad and all the blasted Whitecloacks spread all over the rocks of the blight. Shaidar Haran standing over Rand as he breathes his last on the slopes of Shayol Ghul.

Finntroll - Trollhammaren

Hordes of Trollocs getting drunk and smoking some corrupted blight-leaf amidst cookpots full of Kandori merchants.

Amon Amarth - Tattered Banners and Bloody Flags

"Nowhere is longer safe, The earth moves under our feet. The great world tree Yggdrasil, Trembles to its roots." This is the soundtrack to the first breaking of the world. Avendesora

Ensiferum - Battle Song

Dumai's Wells. "We won this battle, with might and fearless hearts. We came and we fulfilled the prophecy. So now we shall march back towards our kingdom. With heads up high and glimmering eyes, we returned with our glory."

Pretender by Foo Fighters. It references almost everything, from Lews Therins voice to Moridins face to the return of dead Forsaken to the bloody Wheel itself!

Nothing Else Matters by Metallica... Rands song at the end, when hes taken Moridins body.

Pendulous Threads by Incubus reminds me of what the Dark One and Moridin would say to/about Rand.

Last but not least, Domination by Pantera. The Dark Ones song through and through.

Okay, can't we just establish that probably ANY song from ANY sympho/metal/rock band would fit somewhere in WOT :biggrin:

Try thinking of a scene from WOT that would fit a Justin Bieber song  ...okay maybe that's sacrilege

Maybe its just me but when I read Wot I like to listen to music without words like soundtracks because I imagine what it would be like as a movie with a score since its so epic

Na, I actually prefer non-lyrical music when I'm reading too. It is definitely good for getting the imagination going. Some soundtracks like Gladiator and TLOTR can get me thinking about tWOT spontaneously whether I'm reading or not.

I prefer non-lyrical music too, it makes the books turning into movie scenes in your head while the words are distracting. But for me it can't be tLotR soundtrack... because it makes me think of tLotR, not WoT. That's why I like cinematic rock- actually it's not rock at all, it's just a music composed as a soundtrack for non-existing movie. And this one is my best epic WoT music ever- it would fit WoT trailer perfectly, IMO:

[/b]

Also, as our beloved Dragon's life is not very joyful, this one I find just perfect for him (great, beautiful soundtrack, Zimmer is a master):

Another sad one, which makes me think of the pain of farewell to the beloved ones, the last glance into her eyes... so beautiful! Bright Star soundtrack- Yearning

Ok, and one good rock song (love this band, they are awesome)- the lyrics about Rand, challenging everyone to try to knock him down for he's not afraid: Dream Theatre - Pull me under

Lost in the sky

Clouds roll by

and I roll with them

Arrows fly

Seas increase

and then fall again

This world is spinning around me

This world is spinning without me

Every day send future to past

Every breath leaves me one less

to my last

Watch the sparrow falling

Gives new meaning to it all

If not today nor yet tomorrow

then some other day

I'll take seven lives for one

And then my only father's son

As sure as I did ever love him

I am not afraid

This world is spinning around me

The whole world keeps

spinning around me

All life is future to past

Every breath leaves me one less

to my last

Pull me under Pull me under

Pull me under I'm not afraid

All that I feel is honor and spite

All I can do is set it right

Dust fills my eyes

Clouds roll by

and I roll with them

Centuries cry

Orders fly

and I fall again

This world is spinning inside me

The whole world is

spinning inside of me

Every day sends future to past

Every step brings me closer

to my last

Pull me under Pull me under

Pull me under I'm not afraid

Living my life too much in

the sun

Only until your will is done

Oh this and that too,

oh solid flesh, would melt

I forgot about this one: such tender words could Rand say to Lews :biggrin:Dream Theater - Through my words

All your eyes have ever seen

All you`ve ever heard

Is etched upon my memory

Spoken through my words

All that I take with me

Is all you`ve left behind

We`re sharing one eternity

Living in two minds

Linked by an endless thread

Impossible to break

And this one from Inception is perfect for some DFs' actions and desperate duels and fights: Zack Hemsey - Mind Heist (Inception soundtrack)
