How old..

if AS lived until 500-1000 years (depending on the strength of a person) what's the point of immortality?

It's all a matter of perspective.

I the classical era, the average lifespan was in the mid-to-upper twenties.

Today, it is close to seventy, an 100 isn't unheard-of. Yet, people are still searching for ways to increase life expectancy, though someone from Classical Rome may say of us: "they already live up to 100 years, what's the point of immortality?"

A 10-year lifespan for a dog would seem an eternity to an insect that lives only weeks.

Perspective.

I got my answer from Towers of Midnight. Lews Therin's age is given for him at the time of his death. Not sure if I can post it though, whether it comes under the NO SPOILERS SRYLSY! rule or not.

It is a spoiler.

So you get to RAFO!!!!!

I read ToM so I know how old he was.

Seventy or even a hundred weren't unheard of back then either, just much rarer due to external factors. You're mixing up average life expectancy and maximum lifespan. There is yet to be anyplace where 100 is the average lifespan (barring small, localized statistical anomalies).

How old was Lews Therin at the time of his death (and I apologise if this has been done before)?

He was hundreds of years old......Aes Sedai lived alot longer because they were not bound to the Oath Rod back then......all of the AoL Aes Sedai that we know (LTT and the forsaken mostly) were well over 500 before the breaking.

LTT, Ishy, Lanfear, Aginor..probably were much older than anything we are guessing here.

Based on what evidence? Of course, there isn't any, because, as you've noted, we're already stuck with barely-educated guesses as it is. It should be noted, though, that per RJ there's a maximum rate of slowing after which additional OP strength doesn't matter.

He is actually right......they were all very old...but they aged more slowly because of the One Power....

If an AOL uber-channeler is "just past his/her middle years" at 300-400, and can live to be 500 to 700 years old, how many generations of his/her descendents might he/she be alive to see? Ordinary people with 80 year lifespans can live to see great-grandchildren

What sort of implications would this have on stuff like family estates and inheritance? I can see it now: "Son, one day all this will be yours. Of course, you're going to have to wait for your great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grampa to retire first, and he's still just past his middle years, so it's gonna be a while. But all this will be yours. Someday. You only have to share it with 3 million cousins."

In our terms, this would be kinda like having Miles Standish and Pocahontas still around and "just past their middle years", with George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and the Continental Congress advising Barak Obama and Nancy Pelosi and the Supreme Court. Oh, heck, forget that. At age 250 George Washington and company would only now just be taking office.

People, by now you should all be aware that the answer appears in ToM. HOWEVER, this board is spoiler free, and we do not allow comments to be made here that are based on ToM material. Doing so spoils those of us who didn't have the chance to read it yet, and we take this very seriously.
