Eliminating scumtells?

Lately, people tell me I always look scummy. Used to be I always looked innocent. And then I was anti-town for a lot of games. Even people who have never played with me before are telling me I look scummy. I've been musing on why that is, and I think I've got it.

As people have pointed out my scum tells (something Pete is VERY good at!) or my town tells, I've been either eliminating them, or making sure I do them regardless of alignment. Basically, I have no tells anymore, except those only Pete can see. *giggle* I don't think I've done myself any favors.

When you play the same either way, you always look scummy. I can see that now. Too little, too late, unfortunately.

What are your experiences with looking scummy or with ridding yourself of tells?

Some of us don't have to work to look scummy; it just comes naturally.  For that reason I never deliberately plant scum tells.  Some people always look innocent even when they're scum though, so eliminating tells doesn't necessarily make you look scummy.  I know a couple of your tells (I've noticed them on other people too btw).  I will continue to use them on you until the next time we are scum together at which point I will spill the beans :D

Pete told me to be good at mafia you always need to play the same way (No tells, town or scum) or constantly change (Again no tells).

So you could constantly adapt and evolve your playing style?

For me I need to lie as it is a lot less evil then just decieving people.

I think everyone has scum tells though, not necessarily from their play style just the fact of what Panda said in DPR's game.

Scum act 'unnatural' they all do it. It comes from knowing information and knowning things. Masons kinda of act that way but then they can reveal without any problems.

The problem is because of who and what I am, it is natural. I have two very distinct sides to who I am - extremely kind and honorable, and well, the other one. Nothing in the middle. I think that may be the problem, huh? *giggle*

I don't know if I have scum tells. I would like to know if I have. The only thing I find when playing is that I play with my moods. Sometimes I love getting in a good discussion, other times I'm not too bothered. This doesn't matter whether I'm mafia or Town. So I tend to play like that no matter what, and as I said it can change from day to day!

If I have scum tells then let me know please. I have had people say they thought I was scum because of something, but i have done that also when I have been town...so it might be they guessed right or there is a difference that I can't see! :D

Talya, I've played tons of games with you, and I have never seen a difference in your playstyle from town to scum. So, how come that has worked for you and not me? Curious.

Did you go through a period of everyone thinking you were scum no matter what you did? It seems everyone does.

I did have a time when I was killed first night or lynched straight away. It was fustrating. I remember Alys saying once that if I surviived longer than a day I must be mafia. The next time I played I did survive, and I was mafia. :D

Seriously though, I don't think I have always been accused of being Mafia. The Kivam gambit comes up every now and again. But thats it.

I think that the only reason you are thought of as scum is because you have played it quite a few times and have won, people then become paranoid of their own judgement over you so will call you scum, in hope they are right rather than because they have seen something.

Also you are a good player, it tends to have people watch you more. Which is a shame. Because for you, you can't win no matter what you do.

I have also found that, because you are active (as a few of us are) then people will pick on them before those that are very quiet. Trouble is now that people are used to you being active, if you went quiet they pick up on it.

You can't win!

People think I act unnaturally always. Scum or not.

And since when can masons reveal without any problem? Check out the HP game in the White Tower.

And indeed, being quiet helps a lot in not getting noticed. If that's your normal playing style.

You're right, Tal. The fastest way for me to get lynched would be to be quiet.

And, yeah, I forgot. You have the Kivam gambit to weigh you down. At least it didn't get named the Talya gambit. That would be even harder.  ;)

Ditto for me.

I'm not sure if I have tells or not.  I also think I play differently each game.  Not sure if that's true, because it's hard to see yourself as others would while playing.

This topic is just inviting Myndrunner.  :D

I dunno. I know i act goofy in pretty much any game i get in. I know i have scum tells but since its been so long since i have played i can't tell ya what they are.

I know meesh can read me like a book.

I always find it exhausting playing the opposite team as pete. i have to think EVERYTHING through and look at all the possibilities

Talya.. you DON'T!  That's the problem.  You come at people every time and they are blindsided.  I've picked up on you being scum a few times but I couldn't begin to tell you how I knew.  I'm also starting to get a knack for when Lily is.  Again.. can't really tell how...

i've played in three games thus far, and in all three, i've been accused of being Mafia by day 2 and been on the lynching block or dead before day 3.

obviously, it's most likely my n00bism that makes me look like mafia.  but i've always been accused.  first, i defended myself too much and it made me look scummy, then i didn't respond much at all and it seemed like i was just "giving up".  it just gets ridiculous the ways that i look like scum no matter what i do.   :P

Wow, I'm flattered. :D :P

And I'll never let you talk yourself out of being lynched if I think you're scum again, mister! :D

This post could go in the Pet Peeves thread. :D  Nae said something to that effect there; she said that basically no matter what you do, "it's a scumtell!"
