Barm leads the way up the hill, topping the crest that leads to the spot where you first climbed up from the beach. A sense of relief begins to settle over you as you admit to yourself that you really didn’t think you would make it this far. Barm kneels at the edge of the clearing to take one last look before heading across. You wait. Everything seems very peaceful. Barm looks to the left for a while, then back to the right. Everything looks fine, but something is obviously bothering him. You have finally managed to slow your breathing down, but your legs are burning from crouching. You stand up to stretch and from that angle you can see something at the far end of the clearing….something red with black things around it? Is that a hand?

You squint to make it out. “Uh, Barm, I think I see someth…”  You feel like you have been hit in the back by a giant hammer and stabbed through the front with a pitchfork. Your mind reels in pain, but somewhere it registers that you can fly…

 

*ILGROSS, THE ASSASSIN GODFATHER IS DEAD (ACTUALLY, HE IS STILL ALIVE, BUT THE CHICKS IN THE NEST WILL TAKE CARE OF THAT SOON ENOUGH….)*

 

Barm drops to his belly as the Sinta Dett skewers Ilgross in its talons and carries him away to the cliffs. Barm rolls over to check the sky; there were three of those things before. The sky is clear and he turns back to see where the giant bird is carrying Ilgross. It’s headed for the giant nest. The other two birds are perched on the rocks around it.

Barm carefully makes his way over to the other body, which has been picked apart and devoured leaving mostly a skeleton covered a few black feathers. That must be why the other two were sunning themselves on the cliff face. There is no need to rifle through what’s left of the skeleton’s belongings to know that it was Jaydena. The Chapter House Master pendant around her neck tells the story.

Barm slips in between a couple of boulders, keeping an eye on the trail from the jungle and the birds on the cliff. He settles down to wait for survivors.

 

Back at the nest, Ilgross is slowly - I'm just kidding. I've got to take a break to cheer myself up. This is brutal!
