Someone pointed out to me that you can only weave spirit while dreaming.

Are you saying according to TV show? Because according to books, you can definately weave spirit while awake. There were several book passages where one of main character was doing precise channeling with "...touch it with Spirit just so...".

If I remember correct channelers can only hold Spirit weave as they fall asleep and are asleep, other weaves (in real world) are discontinued if channeler falls asleep or unconscious, that why dream tar'agreals are activated using Spirit.

It was meant to reference the only weave you can do when you are sleeping.  If The MAN is only partially dreaming I think it would be neat that he could only weave spirit until freed.

I think it Spirit was the only weave a channeler can hold on to from real world as they fell asleep. Once in a DreamWorld they could channel ALL weaves (aka Egwene vs Dark Ajah/Masaana firefight)

True but I am specifically thinking about the version of The MAN who is talking with Moiraine

A faithful summary of the character arc of the Dragon Reborn

I wanted to post in that thread but it's locked. Anyway here is how it goes in the show SPOILERS!

  Hide contents

Rand: Knock knock

Moraine: Who's there?

Rand: I am the Dragon Reborn!

Moraine: Ok I will now ignore the other possible dragons on your say-so. Lets go alone. We won't need my warder who has dedicated himself to fighting the shadow his whole life.

Rand: Lol yeah and Perrin will just run back to Fal Dara at the first sign if trouble.

Moraine: I'll just forget I even considered two powerful female chanellers for this. I'm the star of this show!

Haha, she also made claims about how there would be a clash between two forces of nature that will guarantee the deaths of those nearby, but nothing remotely of the sort happened.

It may depend on where Ishy exists in relation to the seal.  The whole "I was never bound" thing always confused me.  Is he partially sealed in the bore but close enough that he can still reach out beyond the bore?  Or, is he not in the bore itself?

If you think of him as being in the bore itself (even partially) then it would make sense that he would need someone fully within the "pattern" to break the seal because it exists within the pattern much in the same way that Rand has to have the seals fully broken later.

I am thinking that she is shielded despite the comments of both Brandon and Rafe.   I think they responded in a way that created Aes Sedai level wiggle room.

She must be shielded as her bond with Lan isn't broken - he tells her to unmask the bond when he reaches her at the Eye.

To be fair, it's unlikely she fully understood the nature of the battle to take place.  She gave him the small statue thinking it would be a battle of the power.  Since there are no records of what exactly LTT did, the Aes Sedai really don't have alot of information on what a dragon vs DO confrontation would be like.  But it would also be safe to assume any confrontation between "normal" people and the DO wouldn't end well.

You cant use book rules for the tv show. The tv show has no rules, it is all plot driven. If it is required to pull the moon into the sun, one of the aes sedai will do it without breaking a sweat.

In both books and show there is a misunderstanding of when that battle will occur and how it will happen. In book 1-3, Rand assumed he won against Dark One when it was only Ishamael, and Rand only killed him (1st time) in the 3rd book, while in both book 1 and 2, he just thought he did, and it was a trick.

There is nothing preventing the last battle happening exactly as described, two sheer forces battling it out in the cave of Shayol Ghul, and anyone else inside the cave being killed.

Unless masking and breaking can be confused

Do we have any clear mention in the books of how a Warder reacts when his AS is stilled?

Sorry I can't find the post I wanted to respond to-

Someone mentioned that Covid restrictions affected both the Tarwin's Gap battle and the appearance of the Blight.

The second is explicit in BtS 8.4

They planned to film in the Canaries and had to change to filming in studio

If they had to change the look of the Blight due to Covid that's one thing.  But to have Moraine still say "don't touch anything" and then have her and Rand constantly touching stuff is really awful writing or editing.   Amateur hour mistake.

This episode frustrate me to no end, for reasons pervious posters have already elaborated on.

I understand that Rafe's changes were aimed at making the show more of an ensemble, but that could have been achieved in a way that still showcased the Dragon's power and kept closer to the spirit of the book.

Imagine if it had gone down like this:

Lolial warns Moiraine that the Ogier are hearing rumours the DO is focusing his attention on the Eye of the World. Moiraine explains to the party that the Eye is supposed to be one of the last remnants of the Age of Legends, and they cannot allow it to fall into the hands of the shadow, but to journey there will be risky because it is close to the DO's prison.

Rand, Moiraine and Lan sneak out of Fal Dara at night, not wanting to risk bringing the other to such a dangerous place. We get some shots of them navigating the blight, and Lan gets a chance to show off his skills as he cuts down some blight-born horror. We also get a brief scene of either Tam (flashback) or Lan teaching Rand the flame and the void. Rand asks if Lan is afraid to die, and Lan says 'Death is lighter than a feather, duty is heavier than a mountain. It would be an honour to die helping Moiraine Sedai and the Dragon face the Dark One'.

Meanwhile, much to everyone's horror, an overwhelming host of Trollocks and Fades amasses at Tarwin's gap. Agelmar and his people seem gravely concerned, and prepare to defend the gap, knowing it is likely hopeless.

Moiraine and co. arrive at the Eye, which is some kind of ancient temple. Moiraine interprets writing on the walls and translates that the temple was build to house relics of the last Dragon. They are attached by the man with the flaming eyes, who effortlessly incapacitates Moiraine and Lan. He appears inside Rand's head as Fares Fares, and we get a similar scene with the 'Dark One' offering Rand anything he wants. Rand has the same epiphany, realizing that the real Egwene is destined for greater things than being a farmer's wife. Rand resists, breaks the spell and wakes up. Ishamael toys with Rand, and tortures Moiraine and Lan. This motivates Rand to seize the power and lash out. Ishy is temporarily taken by surprise and forced on the defensive. The two clash, but it is clear that Rand is untrained and no match. Rand flees through the blight, Ishy in hot pursuit.

The fight at the gap begins. Agelmar's forces fight valiantly. Agelmar's sister teaches Egwene how to channel lightning, even though she herself can barely manage  a few sparks. Egwene is a quick study, and soon puts on an impressive display hurling lightning into the Trollock hordes. It is not enough though. Things look bleak. Nynaeve wants to help but cannot seem to channel. She is frustrated as she watches on helplessly. It is only when a force breaks through the ranks and charges at Egwene that Nynaeve manages to break her block, and unleash a devastating attack.

Rand is sprinting through the blight, running for his life with Ishy (now in his flaming eyes form again) trying to find him. Rand bursts out onto a cliff top, and looks down in horror at the scene below. Thousands upon thousands of darkspawn are overwhelming Agelmar and co. Egwene and Nynaeve have slayed hundreds but they are barely holding on, exhausted, too weak to keep it up. Overlooking the battle from the clifftop, Rand closes his eyes, breathes deep, visualizes the flame and the void.

Agelmar, bloodied, near death, surrounded, looks up at the cliff top. There is a figure there, silhouetted in light, but with dark tendrils snaking around him. A HUGE stormcloud is amassing over his head. He looks frightened but in awe. Rand screams as a huge amount of power rushes through him, and from the stormcloud bursts an almighty torrent of lightning which obliterates the Trollock army. The few that survive flee in terror.

Rand falls to his knees, shaking, looking down at his hands in disbelief. Lan and Moiraine come up behind him. They say there is no sign of the Dark One who was following Rand. Moiraine is holding some sort of casket wrapped in cloth, that she recovered from the Eye temple.

Cut back to Fal Dara. They celebrate their victory. People are in scared awe of Rand, and also acknowledge the power of Nynaeve and Egwene. Moiraine unwraps the cloth and reveals the Dragon Banner, and a case containing the Horn.

Lan takes Moirane aside and asks if that was really the DO they saw. Moiraine says no, "if the DO was free from his prison, we would all already be dead, or worse, slaves to his will. No, that  must have been one of the Forsaken. They were the most powerful Aes Sedai of the Age of Legends, far stronger and more knowledgeable than any woman in the Tower today. If they are somehow free, then the last battle is closer than I feared. We must get these young ones trained in time to be ready, and pray that Rand can hold on to his sanity long enough to resist the darkness".

Final scene is Padan Fain letting some Fades sneak into Fal Dara, murder some guards, and steal the Horn.

Instead we got whatever the heck that episode was.

I kind of wish the show had one expert female consultant and an expert male consultant. Did they say Sanderson didn’t get a chance to look at the script for the finale? Oof.

It’s hard for me to say this show isn’t sexist towards men beyond what is actually on the page for the plot after watching the season in its entirety. The writers in Hollywood just can’t help themselves with artificially inflating the female characters, nerfing most the men, injecting character assassination for two of the male leads, and then removed most of the plot points from Rand because of the “mystery”, then I was told to wait for the pay off at Tarwin’s Gap and they give the big moment that should have been Rand’s to all the women…yet again. The main one of which was an accepted who failed to become an Aes Sedai. Not to mention everything wrong in the world is 100% men’s fault unequivocally, as if they knew and chose to do it anyway? Unbelievable.

Imagine reading Hunger Games and then it was all about Peta and Katniss just kinda came along for the ride, or if Harry Potter was mainly about Ron, Hermione, and Neville?  Many of the book readers would say, “what the hell?” And rightly so. Yes, The Wheel of Time is more of an Ensemble, but this season can hardly be called such, or more specifically, a successful one. The only characters allowed to to prosper at all were Egwene, Nynaeve, and Moiraine. Apparently, “heart and soul” to the show runners is to neuter every male character.

Tam-didn’t kill any Trollocs at all. Almost one.

Abel- is a total garbage person. Straight trash. Dumpster fire.

Rand- shot one trolloc from behind…and whinged about Egwene or moped about. I wait an entire season of suck to watch Rand own some fools at the Gap only to have it handed off to some Accepted with extra car batteries through linking…which by the way they should have been on the wall. Not walking into an open plain like they’re about to drop a 90s Christian album. But this is just another example of the Endgame poster syndrome.

Perrin- An utter failure. Killing his wife? I’m embarrassed for the writers. I would be irate as the actor. (The actors seemed to all be reading the books as they make the show too, I’d be livid seeing my character being shredded to ribbons in real time).

Mat- Also would be mad as hell. His backstory is a total joke for no reason. Because apparently only those with trauma can convincingly show us they care about their sisters or friends. (Hollywood continuing down the “fathers suck” road).

Lan- made to look a fool to lift up female characters.

Loial- done dirty too. All his purpose traded away to Moiraine. Then unceremoniously stabbed by Fain? Who appears to have the dagger now?…soooo how we going to survive this one? My non-book friends love him to death but don’t understand why he’s even there…yeah, me neither.

Agelmar- Made to be a disrespectful idiot who is then immediately put in his place by Moiraine.

Lews Therin- Made out to be an arrogant man instead of a desperate man trying to save everyone and only had scary choices to choose from. They were on their last legs fighting the shadow and in his opinion the ladies just wanted to continue fighting a war of attrition they could not win. He was more of a drastic times call for drastic measures, which they conveniently left this out of the conversation.

Hollywood is so hellbent on making women “cool” that they inadvertently put them on pedestals like with a pregnant lady taking out six companions, and then make all the men look like useless toolbags, so much so I don’t even know how I am supposed to like them. I don’t like them as heroes or antiheroes. They just suck. You had 8 episodes to develop their characters…we hardly got anything from them, and that which we did get was mostly a Telenovela… “Mariah! Porque!?” Perrin clutching his pearls with Loial. Both of which were some of the most ferocious fighters in the series. Why not have Loial sing them some axe handles and they make legit axes, talk about preserving life from evil…something. But burn me that was bad. They are such wusses. Bunch of mewling quims.

Now Rand just saunters off into the wilderness, isn’t treated like a lord, doesn’t develop further as a leader, doesn’t get the dragon banner, hasn’t been asked to hunt the horn or the dagger with Perrin and Mat? The storyboarding is terrible. They either don’t know what they are doing or…they know exactly what they are doing, which would make it even worse. I don’t trust them as writers not to screw it up or inject their own personal nonsense into it.

Lastly, for those who disagree that is fine. Enjoy it. But I find it hard to believe if they did similar changes to female characters in the same negative light, you wouldn’t be rioting.

Some nice ideas here.

We can't have FD people knowing about Rand though. In the books only Agelmar saw a male channeler, and he was not willing to accept that.

However, tbh I suspect many of the commenters most aggrieved here would have reacted exactly the same with your version.

Good point about the Shienaran's not being aware of Rand at this point.

I'm just puzzled about a lot of decisions in this episode. At this point both Egwene and Nynaeve have already demonstrated remarkable skill with the power (including bringing people back from the brink of death), which undermines the fact that such complex weaves are supposed to require practice and experience. Their training at the tower will be less impactful given that they have both already demonstrated powers beyond the typical Aes Sedai.

The end must have also been super confusing to non-book readers. From Moiraine's perspective, Rand just faced the DO at his prison, overcome temptation, and vanquished him. Despite being stilled/shielded, shouldn't she also be immensely relieved that apparently the Last Battle was just won? What is it she thinks happened? It was messy and unclear.

This is a new turning of the Wheel, relying on the book version for plot has been chanted over and over as a clear path to frustration.

WAFO is the only proper action to understand what is going to happen, or so I thought...

My nonbook reader friends weren't confused by the ending, aside from some minor details.  Similar to the books we believe that Rand has faced the DO and it is done.  Moiraine is not so certain but doesn't really voice her concerns.  My friends took what both Moiraine and Fain said at face value, this only being the first battle among the last battle.

But I also understand nonreaders not totally getting it just as many book readers were confused by the ending in tEotW back in the day.

I am a non book reader. I am somewhat confused. Moraine is my favorite character so now that she is stilled what will be her role? I was expecting a better cliff hanger.episode 7 was a bigger cliff hanger than E8. Just ki d of meh. Too much dreaming. The king of the city dying so easily. Naneyeve seems to be the most important character and I dislike her. I like the show just disappointed in E8.

Training at the tower? Show-wise, Siuan should resign and give the Seat to the EF girls, who are way better than any living AS. They do not need any training: they can already instant-heal from near-death  and unleash devastation to the enemy.

It's like if in GoT 1st season, when  Merin Trant comes for Arya Stark, she doesn't run away but takes the sword from Syrio and kills the knight in 5 seconds.
