It was first published as a short story in 1998, then expended to a full novel in 2004. A comic book adaption followed shortly thereafter, though it was plagued with production and delivery issues. The story focuses on Moiraine Damodred, an Accepted in the White Tower and Lan Mandragoran, an officer in the Aiel War.

Tor has given us five copies of the graphic novel to give away here on Dragonmount. To enter just post below with your favorite memory of Lan and/or Moiraine from any book (Towers of Midnight spoilers allowed) by midnight Saturday, January 15th Eastern time. We regret that this contest is only open to fans in the United States.

You can pre-order the book now from Amazon.com or find it at your local bookstore.

Definitely the moment that caused me to lose one of my favorite characters for years and years and years. At the docks of Cairhien Moiraine sacrificies herself for the greater good, and she KNEW she was going to have to do so. White light swallowed everything. Oh Moiraine, plead for thy salvation!

Thanks for doing this contest! Can't help but love the awkwardness between Perrin and Lan during and after the time when Perrin accidentally walks in on Moiraine as she's getting dressed.

My favorite memory of Lan: When Lan hears Rand confess to Min, Elayne and Aviendha that he loves and wants all three. He actually snatches the pipe from his mouth and then as they respond he begins "an intense study" of his pipe's contents. One of the few truly human moments from the man.

Favourite memory of Moiraine: When she tells Mat that she can "See why the Seanchan Empress couldn't resist him" when Mat totally ruins Thom and her from having a tender moment after the Tower of Ghenjei.

Moiraine's testing in the White Tower! When New spring was released I thought this was the only moment that contributes somehow to the main story.A major thing that was not described in the main series. For everything else in NS we had some hints.

And my opinion hasn't changed. The significance of this moment is not depreciated by Nyn's testing ToM. The latter was not a waste of pages either - the contrast between these two events is stunning.

Second close come her words to Thom: "Tanchico will not kill you" thus outplaying him as rand's adviser and turning on the red light in my head for the upcoming romance

I don't know if her "post mortem" letters should be accounted for her moments as she is off-screen when those are being read. If so, these two would grab the top spots.

My favorite memory of Moiraine is when she uses balefire to destroy the Darkhounds, after fleeing from Illian upon finding out Sammael ruled there. I don't know why, but that whole scene really stuck with me. It brings me back to my days of reading Wheel of Time at midnight on a school night, too enthralled to but the book down :).

My favorite memory of Lan is probably when he fought the Myrddraal during EoTW. It was when I really truly realized how awesome he was.

I liked when Moiraine saw Lan after he'd beaten Ryne and mentioned that Ryne was wrong about being better than Lan. Lan responded along the lines of "No he was better. But he didn't understand; you quit when you're dead." She decides to bond him right there.

My favorite Lan and Moiraine memory is in tEotW on the camelyn road when Lan leaves to scout the Trollocs. the Line goes "...I will return to you as soon as I am able. You will know if I fail." and Moiraine says "The light go with you, last Lord of the Seven Towers." just a great scene.

Every time moiraine told the boys that she would kill them herself before she would let the dark one have them. That always spoke to me about her position of the situation.

My absolute favorite scene with Lan is in A Crown of Swords, Chapt. 31, Mashiara when he saves Nynaeve, they are together after many months and dangers apart. Also, when he shares in the breaking of her block. It brings a heartfelt lightness to my soul. I cry every time I read or listen to it.

My absolute favorite scene with Moiraine: In Eye of the World, when we first meet her. The excitement and mystery surrounding her. Her calm demeanor. and later when she tells Emond's Field people of their history and the crowds ready to pitch her out of town. I knew when I read the scene, I would really love this book.

Favorite part for Moiraine & Lan together? In The Great Hunt, when she goes off and tries to find answers, the little talk they had about past times and Moiraine telling Lan she is going to transfer Lan to another like a package.

When Lan gives Nynaeve his signet ring of the Malkieri Kings in The Great Hunt. Awesome! The best modern fantasy couple!

I'm a HUGE fan of Lan (hence my name: Mashiara). One of the things I like in Lan and Moiraine's relationship is when Moiraine starts to get jealous over Nynaeve. She claims she never felt jealousy over others who have shared his bed, but Nynaeve has laid claims to his heart and even he didn't realize it yet. I think this shows that she is very emotionally attached to Lan, though she isn't very good about showing it.

One of my favorite Lan scenes is when Nynaeve tricks him into going to Saldaea instead of Shienar. Very clever on her part, and silly of him to not suspect it of her.

I also wonder about how Lan states in ToM that he hardly feels anything through the bond because he was trying to ignore it for so long. Did he fuzz it often when he was with Moiraine, or only since Myrelle took it?

I loved Lan giving Rand pointers before he met with Siuan in TGH. Moiraine balefiring the crap out of Be'lal in TDR. Obviously, Lan tossing Mo into the pond in NS. Mo's POV in TFOH right before she tackles Lanfear into the the Red Stone Doorway!

“To stand against the Shadow so long as iron is hard and stone abides. To defend the Malkieri while one drop of blood remains. To avenge what cannot be defended.”

The scene in the Borderlands ate Vandene and Adeleas house. It's the first real insight we get into them and their relationship, and hints at their past. it's also saddenning, since Moiraine explains the preparations for he death, and Lan's bond passing on. It says a lot about her, and her committment to her cause, but also Lan's loyalty, but still fierce independence. The Draghkar scene that follows also adds all kinds of badass to the scene as well. ;)

Like Myrddin258, my favorite Moiraine moment has to be the story of the fall of Manetheren. Powerful stuff.

My favorite memory of Moiraine was in TDR when she, Perrin, and Faile were heading to Tear and having fish for dinner. She said to Faile, "Tonight you will eat fish. Tomorrow, you may die."

My favorite Lan moment is when he finally professed his love for Nynaeve, but refused to marry her for the sake of his quest to avenge Malkier. Instead, he gave her his signet ring to wear around her neck.

To me, that moment seemed even more profound than marrying her would have been. The ring is one of the last remaining symbols of his fallen kingdom, and his quest to redeem or avenge it. His quest is all-important to him, and he readily accepts that it will one day claim his life, and yet he gives the very symbol of that quest to Nynaeve, showing her just how much more important SHE is to him than his life.

Gifting that ring to Nynaeve really highlights the man that Lan has become. His quest for Malkier has defined his entire life since he was an infant. But in less than two years Randland-time, his singular destiny has shifted to include Nynaeve---a hot-tempered young woman who has become as much a part of who Lan is as his life-long quest for Malkier.

In Lan's mind, he would be nothing without his quest. But by giving Nynaeve the signet ring, he shows her that he would EQUALLY be nothing without her.

Oh wow. There's so much.....

I'm going to have to go with the last Lan and Nynaeve scene in The Shadow Rising: "If you die, I will not survive you long."

Call me dense - because I am - but it was the first time realized the relationship between them.

My favorite memory of Lan is when he started to show Rand how to use a sword. Turning a rough hued farmboy in to something....different....

The scene at the end of New Spring when Moiraine bonded Lan, especially when he drew his sword and swore to her, was so touching. But yeah, I don't think she ever succeeded in teaching him humility. ;o)

My favorite Lan/Moiraine memory is when they first met, both him throwing her in the pond, and her dumping half the pond on him. The ants were also funny.

My favorite scene would probably be in The Eye of the World when they bed down for the first time in the little hollow and branches while leaving the Two Rivers.
