1v1 arguments are rarely about nothing. it's a thinner net, but it has stronger cords.

They are usually two biased people with biased perspectives arguing about something [non-alignment indicative] and getting mad that the other doesn't see things exactly as they do. Which people rarely do.

If you aren't going to agree about something after 4-5 posts back-and-forth, you aren't going to agree with after 30 posts back-and-forth. Shelve it and if you still feel the player you are arguing with is a wolf, push them again closer to EoD when it actually matters anyway.

That describes my first tdome this game, but the second one with Liz was different. Tdomes have a point, sometimes, and sometimes they are forced on you by a wolf.

Every 1v1 is different. Sometimes it's pointless, and sometimes it reveals something about a player if you're paying attention.

Speaking generally - start of game 1v1s are bad. Later game - they're not as bad.

But yes, I am specifically talking about early/mid d1.

We get very passionate when we care.

And I think the best games are the one when the players care about the result and their performance.

But ultimately it's a team game, which means that group cohesion is huge and nothing destroys cohesion and drains the interest of other players like having to read long subjective 1v1 arguments that are essentially about nothing. Tunes people out of the game and creates volume that isn't productive [see the chart for how I feel about high-volume, poor thread environment games]

^^^^ so much this

I don't want to tinfoil on you, Hallia or Sili

Shifting reads on everyone else is a given at this point

Its not about any of the people you mentioned.

Then who?

I have to run. Absolutely can't be late for work at the moment

For BFG EYES ONLY

The tl;dr is basically getting into a huge argument on d1 when most of the thread lacks strong opinions on the game and it's picking at minimal things that may not be [indicative] is bad for both your view of the game and others' ability to play objectively while getting into an argument (if you can call it that) with someone on d4 when you've reviewed their content and have a strong amount of role-indicative reasons as to why that player is a wolf is more "your job as a villager".

Generally, the more [information] you have to analyze and the more you do analyze, the better your reads are going to be. Being aggressive is always going to change the thread direction, so why not time your aggressiveness for the spots where you have a greater chance of having better reads?

Kat I'm glad you've stuck around the Mafia boards despite game volume still needing to be reeled in a bit. DM is going through a little transitional mafia period and I think there will be more stable and readable games upcoming, but I'm proud you're sticking through it and I think you played very well for someone who had completely understandable trouble keeping up with the thread at times (IE it didn't stop you from contributing)

I respect that a lot maf_thumbsup.png

I think by far the biggest issue this game was the volume explosion that occured after multiple long 1v1 arguments - which never help town and really need to be dissuaded.

Great article on "narrow discuissions" vs. "wide discussions" here:

http://www.mafiauniverse.com/forums/threads/1601-5-Narrow-vs-Wide-Discussions-%28by-Crunkus%29

Summary of points:

Two players arguing is not natural, and leads to all kinds of town-negative outcomes. Both players are likely to have skewed versions of the conflict if they do not have the voices around them offering perspectives. Sometimes people change and moderate given what the voices around them are saying. This applies primarily to town, who often have every reason to moderate their position under such circumstances, as opposed to mafia who may be looking to simplify their day by letting one simple encounter define how they vote or how they contribute for the day. Don't stay out of it. Don't offer quips and one liners. Do something to address the concerns of the parties and focus on ideas and perspectives. The town can learn the most from the situation that way.

If you see a discussion going off the rails...get involved. Fact check both sides and share what you've come up with. If someone really is doing something unfair in your view, point it out as clearly as possible. Sometimes it's easy to ignore that you are being unfair if only ONE voice you are angry with or think is scum is the only one offering that perspective. Your added voice, perhaps along side others, can help keep things from getting out of control. Make your thread a more productive place. Just telling people to shut up and staying out of it doesn't do that. Doing that takes a touch more work, but it's worth it.

Failures to communicate between 2 players are not ultimately the fault of either of the players, but are a shared responsibility ultimately of all the town aligned players. Every town aligned player has a vested interest in keeping 2 way "shouting matches" less frequent and intense by widening the discussion.

Sorry. :(

really, i think the real real problem is that lenlo was so wolfy, and darthe cleared two major wolves.

Sorry, I mean lenlo was tilted and so seemed very very wolfy, and therefore i went after him for so long.

No need to sugar coat it man, I know I screwed the pooch big time.
