Minerva Terrace at Yellowstone - it's a deposit of calcium carbonate, but the hot springs continually dissolve and redeposit the carbonate; it's not permanent enough to be rock yet.

 

Salt's tricky though!

Can you or would you ever perform subsurface investigations with geophysical methods? Seismic refraction etc. Or is it more research based

Yes, but I moved to an office based job a few years ago so am no longer directly involved with seismic acquisition/processing and instead am included in the infinitely more interesting interpretation side of it!
