Physics Fact of the Day

 

There is a famous experiment called the "Double Slit Experiment" that shows how light is both a particle, a wave, and also how particles in the future can affect what happened in the past!  Yup, quantum mechanical time travel.  So what is the double slit experiment?  Well, first, take a piece of paper and cut two slits in it.  Then put it in a dark room and shine some light at it so the light can pass through those slits and shine onto a surface.  What happens?

 

 

As you can see, in some ways the light behaves like a particle.  If you observe the surface, the light will hit at discrete points, just like you'd expect with a particle.  Throw a baseball at a wall and it hits at a specific point.  Shine a light particle on a wall and it hits at a discrete point.

 

But, in some ways light behaves like a wave.  See, waves BEND around things in their way.  Like a water wave going around a wall and bending to fill in the gaps, or light going through a prism and bending to make rainbows, the light waves can go through the slits and bend.  Thus, on your surface you will see alternating portions of light and dark spots continuously, just like you would get a from a wave bending after hitting an obstacle.

 

And now for the weird stuff.  According to quantum mechanics when you observe something you force it into a specific state.  So, one interesting thing we can do is to observe linked particles after passing through the double slit.  Amazingly, if we act on one linked particle (particle A) to force it into a specific state then it will make it's linked particle (particle B) go into a specific state also.  What is weird is that by forcing the linked particle (B) into a different state after passing through the double slit it actually changes the behavior of the linked particle (B) before passing through the slit, effectively using the present to alter the past!

Not too much more than the replacements tbh.

She isn't saying an awful lot compared to some other players so I'm kind of falling into the trap that most people do around here which is to focus on the most active players.

 

I will say I didn't like how she seemed bothered by the fact that I said I had a town read on Wombat.

She acted like it was unnecessary. Maybe that's just because she's still kind of a newbie or maybe it was something else.

But when you think about it, who gets bothered the most by townies considering other townies clear without it needed to be proved via cop or whatever?

Mafia right? So that's a possibility worth looking into later I think.
