What now?

Do you claim day 1?

Do you claim when viewed?

Do you never claim?

Do you claim after several day phases?

Claiming Day 1 can be a move that saves the cop from outting himself unnecessarily.   If you don't claim and the cop views you and declares caught scum then he is exposed.  Getting it out in the open can be a positive play in this regard.  It does introduce a ton of WIFOM though.

If someone does claim day 1, how do you approach them and the WIFOM it creates?  Do you get rid of it by lynching the player or do you treat them as you do any non-claimed player and just look for scum tells in their play?

Either claim immediately or don't bother.

Personally I think it's pointless to claim Miller.

If you claim right away all discussion becomes focused on you with one of two results.

Either you get lynched and town is down a man or you're left alive to have the mafia sew doubts about you for the rest of the game unless they decide they're better off just killing you.

In both cases you've only distracted the town from scum hunting.

If you've been investigated there is almost no way to talk yourself out of being lynched. Claiming Miller just looks like lazy scum.

You'll be lynched whether you claim or not 99 times out of 100.

Don't claim IMO

But if you do get a miller claim, don't blind lynch, especially in an advanced game. There is more than one way to prove they are town and the mod chose to use a miller role for a reason, normally for balance to help the mafia. So keeping the miller and proving them town through other means can hinder the mafia

Play your game and take the lynch if you're found out. The WIFOM created if you're left alive is going to be floating around all game long. I'd play the odds really of being viewed.

What about the negative impact of possible outting the cop?

It'd depend on the type of game. If your cop outs himself on one reveal in an advanced game (I'm guessing it's an advanced game with a miller) as well as early on in the game then that's attributed to both bad luck that you happened to get viewed so early and bad play by the cop. I can't really speak for what happens later but more often than not there'll be more ways of "confirming" someone in an advanced game than just the cop viewing by testing PRs and whatnot so the cop generally becomes less useful. At that point it'd then be worth it since cop would have viewed 3 or 4 people which still gives you good info.

Depends.

Is it Death Miller or regular Miller? Is it a Miller team or just you by yourself?

You forgot about rubber tongue. :baalzamon:

That was my own invention. It's when the miller views as town to the cop, but views as dishonest to the LD (even if they're really telling the truth). Basically the opposite to silver tongue.

Feels more like a composite role...

I would think it would just be town that shows as liar to LD and have nothing to do with cops.

That's pretty much how it worked, but when I used the role I wound up needing to explain that a cop would view it as town. And it never got viewed anyhow; I was really looking forward to the resulting chaos.

Ehh I dislike it when the roles make themselves too complicated. Mafia literally becomes a pure guessing game. Oh you viewed me? Doesn't matter because there's a bus driver and a nexus and two roleblockers, a jailkeeper and coincidentally I'm one of several godfathers.. Advanced is fun, but kitchen sink is a terror if you're genuinely trying to play.

I think claiming miller on day is good. As Peace says,  you might keep the cop hidden a few more days that way.

So you think the best thing a miller can do is basically just kill himself as quickly as possible? I don't really see how that's the best way to utilize your role.. It'd be 10x better to not claim and make yourself as big a target as possible for either lynch or NK by playing extravagantly and loudly. At least that way you have a lynch train to analyze instead of an "oh he's a miller let's just lynch him" set of folks.

I think drawing all the attention on yourself so early cripples scum hunting.

THIS.

IMO, claiming or hinting at ANY kind of role early in a game is bad for town, because not only does much of the talk focus on that afterwards, it also increases the chances that players will miss subtle tells and slips from other players cause they only focus on the claim and what they think about it.

If you're a high profile player, you should prob claim somewhat early as a miller because there is a good chance you might get viewed eventually, but I'd prob claim night 1 or when its getting closer to the deadline during the day and the game is stalling somewhat.

No, it´s up to the people around how to react. I have seen two games where the miller claimed Day 1 (not at DM) where he could help town until he got killed. In these games he wasn´t killed on Day 1 so he got time to help town a lot.

Question about this role...what is the point of having a towny that shows up as scum if viewed

I think of it as "anti utility" or a handicap.

I use it to power DOWN the town instead of power them up.

So if you think of it in terms of numbers, where townies are 1's, power roles like doc and cop are 2's, a miller would be a -1.

You want to use them when you want to give mafia a small advantage but giving them a symp or power would be too much. Instead of giving them a hand you give the town a kick.

Get it?
