unfortuneately for me, im still on my first read throught the series, and im not quite finished with tSR. Does she really become that annoying? She is the embodyment of women. she loves her man, but gives him shite constantly. not all women are like this...i guess she does just embody all the elements that are annoying about women. though i havent had that much interaction with her at this point, is it really that irritating that shes around? from where i sit now, i like her. maybe that'll change when i get further into it. as far as a character goes, she seems pretty solid.

No Faile really isn't that bad. She is way too overly posessive of Perrin wich I find rather anoying. In particular there is a scene with her and Min that kind of but me off Faile for a while. None the less, she does have plenty of remeaming qualities and overall is, as you said, a pretty solid character.

I find her incredibly annoying. The way she used Loial and just acted in general on the trip from Tear to the Two Rivers was just.. ugh... I wanted to punch her in the back of the head. Who acts like that?! She continues to be crazily posessive of Perrin throughout the series... I wish Perrin WOULD sleep with Berelain. HER I can stand.

I just feel sorry for Perrin. He's such a gentle soul, and then he gets saddled with this viperish harridan. Blah.

Oh well. I'm sure there are many women that will agree with me that RJ's grasp of writing female characters is often tenuous.

iono though perrin is physically strong...he seems weak in a way. hes not strong like faile or moraine are. they are "strong women" perrin seems rather timid, and faile ballances him out. or some such shizzel.

I have to say that Faile is #2 on the WoT most annoying list.

1. Elayne

2. Faile

3. Nynave

4. Egwene

5. Perrin

Really, Perrin has become more annoying to me than Faile. She at least manages to keep perspective. He's willing to let the world burn just to get her back. Very romantic I'm sure ... but totally irresponsible for someone in his position with his responsibilities. Marriage improved Faile ... and Nynaeve, I think ... adversity and responsibility improved Egwene greatly ... Elayne is still a bit annoying ... but Perrin has become ... well, a little crazy.

I'm only re-reading through the beginning of LoC, but at this point I rank the most annoying females at least as

1. Aviendha

2. Faile

3. Nynaeve

4. all the Wise Ones

5. Egwene when she's around Rand

Egwene (as her responsibility increases, after she reveals she is not actually AS), Elayne, Min, and even Nynaeve are a lot less irritating on this re-read so far. I guess I haven't gotten the part where Faile becomes less irritating and Perrin moreso.

I find I have a lot less tolerance for the Wise Ones and those of the Aes Sedai who think that it's anything less than complete idiocy to keep Rand in the dark and only feed him little tidbits of knowledge as they see fit. That's foolish and immature. But it plays of RJ's little thread of "Women think that men are stupid, and men think women are crazy." Which is amusing, as far as it goes, but sometimes it gets to be too much. Sometimes I have to walk away (from a book!) because the I'm so angry at the characters being too childish to be plausible.

I think they are all annoying at one time or another. That is one thing I like about how RJ writes his characters. They are not perfect. I feel that makes them seem more real and believable. We are all annoying and stupid some of the time. My favorite character and the character I feel is most annoying changes depending on where I am at in the series. They have all driven me crazy at one time or another, and so have some of my very best friends. That is what is so great about their characters. I love them all... even when they speculate about one another, get themselves poed at one another for what they think the others are about... when they often have the means to just ask. If that last bit didn't sound like a rant.......my $.02.

I dont find Faile annoying, shes the perfect fit for Perrins personality to make him do things he normally wouldn't have without her. IMO i find Elaida and Sevanna to be the most annoying characters in the series. Elaida likes to act like a little kid if she doesnt get her way.

My only problem with Faile is that if she had never shown up, THE SERIES WOULD BE DONE BY NOW! As a character she is ok but she has acted like a 4-ton anchor attached to the heart of the story-line. Without her we could cut nearly an entire book of carp.

If you're not annoyed by here in TSR, you probably won't be. She's a fun character who thinks for herself, and does what's best for her husband even if he doesn't think it is.

Though things change in book 8 and on ward, so you might get annoyed by her then. Personally I love her.

WOW, how could I have left the wise ones off? Okay slash Perrin and ad the Wise Ones.

:D Have you looked at the real world lately?

That means it is a good book.

No, obviously a good character has to have foibles, has to get mad, angry, sad, sulky sometimes.

I enjoyed the scenes in TFoH where Elayne and Nynaeve were getting on each other's nerves, and then getting on Birgitte's nerves, and they were both very petulant. But three women thrown in close proximity for a length of time (in the heat) are bound to start getting crabby. That's understandable, and I don't mind reading that.

But when they're acting crazy for no plausible reason, other than that He thinks it would be funny and would give The Men more reason to roll their eyes about women, I find that hard to read. When the motivation behind a character's actions does not seem credible or realistic. I mean... I read it of course, it just is what makes me dislike a character.

And to whoever's glib remark about the real world: the world is what it is, it's what we relate books that we read to. When a given book does not compliment my experience IN the real world, that's when it becomes hard to read.

As a woman, I may have a shorter tolerance for RJ's female characters, though. I wonder if that's the case. I wonder if we women are more irritated by RJ's female characters than the guys are.

Then you are priveleged to live around people who are saner than average.

Probably, yes. I actually think their irrationality is cute sometimes.

It's interesting, because women are notoriously more critical of the behavior of other women. And I think a woman reading a book written by a man is more likely to point out the scenes where the author obviously doesn't know one end of a female from another.

I have never in my life, nor can I imagine anyone I know having, met another girl, a stranger, and within minutes actually uttered the phrase "I think we are going to be good friends" and then got into a group hugfest (while a poleaxed man stands by shaking his head over the strangeness of femalekind). Those are the types of scenes where I just think... who ACTS like that?

*insert obligatory protests of numerous people who routinely going around making BFF hugs with attractive strangers*

Sometimes it's cute, and sometimes it gets to be too much. YMMV.

(That was a RJ-calibre eyebrow arch for you there. You can imagine a sniff too if you want.)

Faile is one of those characters that makes me wonder, "What am I still reading this for?" She wasn't that bad in the early series, though.

I think people really started hating her when she got kidnapped and became the ultimate page filler.

I don't know if it's a universal truth about women, but where I'm from this is EXACTLY the case - about women being more critical about other women, I mean. And I believe that this is the primary reason why women's feuds last longer: they spend lot of time criticizing other women, and when the other finds out, she'll do the same, and neither would confront the other. They would just act indifferently towards each other, till one or the other finally explodes.

Quite contrary to us men who, most of the time, would just jump on the one that arouses our anger, whether by words or by fists. Which is not to say that it's a good way of expressing ourselves, but certainly more liberating and direct. :D And I have known guys who had fistfights with each other and ended up being close friends. I guess it also promotes mutual respect for each other when you see that the other is someone who pushes back.

Oh, and I find that the women here, in this forums at least, love the idea of the "superior" woman to be favorable, as opposed to what you're thinking Wynne - I'm just sayin'.
