Fantasy foods

Recommended Posts

So, whilst on my long, undeserved exile from DM due to being computer-less, I had time to do a lot of sleeping.

And thinking.

And it made me wonder what some of our favorite fantasy/sci-fi characters eat. Like, for instance, I think we can all agree that kaf is like coffee- or maybe more like a Turkish coffee or straight espresso.

And klah, from the Pern books is too.

But what are cauldron cakes from Harry Potter?

And THAT made me wonder what foods there ARE in different fandoms, and which ones people would want to try if they could.

So. What foods from a fantasy series/book have always intrigued you? What would you want to try first if you were plopped down in that world? What would you avoid at all costs? What other foods do you remember from your favorites?

For me, I would die to try some real Klah (Anne McCafferey's pern books). I would avoid Mrs. Lovett's meat pies if it was the last thing I did. (Sweeney Todd). I'd love to see a real chocolate frog, butterbeer, or pumpkin juice (all Harry Potter)

What about you?

Let me just first get over my giggle fit at what you did with your free time. Ok now let me grab the list of fantasy foods I've made over the years. :P

I would also love to try Kaf, Klah and Butterbeer *eyes Sunshine*

I think that Klah might be something like a cross between coffee and cocoa, with cinnamon added. No idea why I think cocoa is in there, but the cinnamon is because it's made from the bark of something (both the klah and cinnamon).

Kaf is supposed to be very bitter so I'd say espresso.

Off the top of my head the following WoT foods / drinks spring to mind which I would like to try: Kaf, apple brandy, gilded fish, Egwene's mom's bread, Domani stir fry, whatever meat it is they added arrath to.

Start with any spit-roasted side of beef described in any fantasy novel ever written...add a little lembas bread (and/or Egwene's mothers's bread and cheese) and finish with her honey cakes....washed down with butterbeer.

Or, anything that comes out of Polgara's kitchen.

Funny how I never have a desire for bread and cheese until I'm reading a fantasy novel.

Folks did travel from all over Sendaria just to eat at Faldor's after all.

Everytime she made Silk eat gruel just made me laugh.

Silk....one of the great fantasy characters of all time....Nice to know people still remember Eddings.

Yes!! Man, that's bringing back memories now ... lol

And I think a Fantasy Food restaurant would be a brilliant idea! Would have a rather limited clientèle though, I suppose ... lol

I got all excited, thinking that we could imagine our own fantasy foods. I want a cheese tree!

But, oh well. To the point. Harry Potter's foods are great fun. The description of butter beer as being kind of like butterscotch isn't very helpful, since it just makes me think of butterscotch while at the same time telling me that it doesn't taste exactly like it. What else does it taste like? I imagine it must be like some kind of sweet mulled cider or ginger beer type thing.

I've always thought the best way to drink butterbeer (i'm not a huge HP fan) would be with a large helping of dark, spiced rum

I've always been interested in historical and fantasy cooking and I have a few resources I could share.

Here's a compilation of some Middle-Earth recipes. Some of these are recreations, like the recipe for lembas and some of them are themed.

This is the Redwall Kitchen, a collection of recipes from Redwall. Otter Hotroot Soup! Shrew Bread! Deeper 'n Ever Pie! Seaweed Grog!

There were a few efforts here at Dragonmount to make a Randland Cookbook, like the White Tower Recipe board (archived by oocities.com). Thought I'd save it from the memory hole.

As for historical cooking, there are a number of resources out there but I'll just link a few that I've worked with. For medieval cooking, there is Pleyn Delight and the slightly-more picturesque Medieval Cookbook. While the Medieval Cookbook has a lot more illustrations, both are a good starting point into medieval cooking. Both books address medieval French and English cousine as well as a list of books for further reading, including a handful of period works. For the modern palate, I recommend Fireside Cooks & Black Kettle Recipes, a collection of colonial American recipes. The first part of the book is devoted to the hurried housewife and her colonial kitchen while the rest of the work is devoted to early American cooking up until the mid-19th century.

The spice must flow.
