Well, they could just be busy or don't have anything to say, but I think that if someone is really quiet in real life, they are mafia. Online, I have no idea, but I would think townie because a lot don't have that much information and a mafia would be really active to try to cover his tracks. Not saying that every active person is mafia, because a lot of people like me just want to be involved a lot, but mafia is usually active

Mmm... not really. I think most the stuff you learn in person still applies. The only problem is, most people know the obvious tells and things that point to mafia, and they will try and use it against you. :(

 

The trick is watching for motivations. What is each person's agenda? Are they just trying to survive? Are they actively seeking scum? Are they twisting words to make others sound scummy? Etc. etc. Who'd defending who and why?

I'd suggest, as your first game, be bold. Don't be afraid. Do your best and don't apologize for it. If you make mistakes and it leads to your death, oh well. Ya' learn and become a better player.

I suggest questioning alot. If someone writes something you find illogical, ask them why or what they mean by it. It's the best way of learning the game. Doing what BG said will probably get you killed, and that won't exactly help you..

Fair enough Arez. That's your opinion. I say if you are bold and say what is on your mind, you can catch scum. I've been in about 30 games now, not counting on-going ones, and I have only been lynched 2x as town, and one of them was on purpose cause my lynch nerfed a mafia role. I've been NK'd a whole lot though. Ya live and learn. Find your own style. If you constantly get lynched... then maybe you need a new style. But I say be bold and speak your mind. Nothing worse than being wishy washy. Got have some skin in the game.

Now that is truth. You do need to be dang careful how you phrase everything, cause the use of a wrong word can be used against you.

 

Wishy washy means you don't feel confident in the cases you are making. If you don't truly believe your case, others won't either.

I remember my complete BS case against Soy in Ferngully but I didnt let up and got him. Was a good thing he was scum.

Arez has been on my watch list, but I'm still most comfortable with Maw. And yes, Rand, I am next on the mod list. I've been waiting until this game gets a little bit further. If too many games are all going on at once, they tend to compete for players because some people don't want to be in a lot at the same time. I'd been thinking I'd start my signups around Night 3 here.

its up to the mod. i may go random, i may go no lynch. i may mess with NA (like making them all void or rebound) heck i may even give out PR's (Post Restrictions). it juist really depends on my mood and how evil i'm feeling at the time *nods*

What's everybody's opinion of those who are the quietest - are they more often townies or scum?

 

In my experience, which isn't all that much compared to some here, it seems to be a mix. However I also find that serial killer roles tend to hide there too. Usually there is at least one mafia member that stays really quiet out of the group, but there are townies in there too. It's tough.

 

 

And don't worry Rand. I remember my first game. It's one of those games like Stratego that you can learn pretty fast but the strategy can take a lifetime. You only learn by trying and figuring out what doesn't work for you.

@Basel Ok, just confirming. I had a mafia idea I thought was good, so is the best way to do it to give it to you or someone else in the list, or what else? I have no particular interest in modding it myself, but will do it if I must.

Rand: generally first-time mods are recommended to find an experienced mod to run the game along with them and look over their shoulder. I had one for the game I have coming up, but Kathleen says she is impressed enough with what I have planned that I could handle things solo.

 

Even after your first time, it's best if you have someone with lots of experience as a mod look over your setups in private and make suggestions as to how balanced it is until you build up a good deal of experience. Don't give it to me, this will only be my first time running a game and I'm not remotely qualified to check anyone else's game.
