Holdswell. A tiny, sleepy village in the middle of a vast plain of prairie grass and patchwork farmland. Far removed from the hustle and bustle of cities and modern life, Holdswell almost seems to be from another time entirely.

On any given day, you can stroll through the tidy collection of buildings and watch the citizens peacefully carry out their lives. Day in, day out; it is always the same. Here, a pleasant-faced housewife sweeps her doorstep, watching her children as they frolic in the mild breeze and warm sunshine. There, a man sits on a bench outside his shop, fiddling with a newly-finished pair of shoes, hoping to attract a customer.

On the edge of town is the blacksmith's forge; the loud clangs from its depths set the air ringing, softer as you reach the middle of town, almost disappearing the farther you go...but always there. A sort of musical chime to accompany the movements of your feet on the dusty ground.

Yes, Holdswell is a haven. The older boys complain about being so far away from the cities, loudly bragging about the adventures they would have if only Holdswell wasn't so boring. But no matter how loud their complaints, in their hearts they can never truly imagine living anywhere but here.

Here, where everyone knows one another and where people take their neighborly duties seriously. Here, where the weather is kind, but not too kind. Here, where everyone stops to say hello as they pass in the street. Here, where there is nothing more dangerous than falling down the stairs.

Except now there is.

Last night, that funny old man who lived in a hut on the outskirts of the village was found dead. That in itself isn't unusual; people do die here, after all. Old age, sickness, childbirth; nature takes its course here in Holdswell, and no one complains about it. That's just the way it is.

As you shuffle from your house toward the small square, clinging to the hands of your family if you have it and hunching in on yourself if you don't, you notice the air is strangely still. Of course. The forge is silent. Your thoughts are drawn involuntarily to the image that has imprinted itself on your mind forever, the reason for the silence.

Blood. Blood everywhere. Splattered on the walls, pooled in patches across the floor, soaked through the straw of the sleeping pallet in the corner. So red, so vivid. It looks unnatural, that red. It's the color of life, but that red belongs on the inside of people, not spread across the interior of the hut like a bizarre mural.

The funny old man (Olie—that's his name, you suddenly remember, wishing you hadn't thought of it) lies there on the pallet, sightless eyes staring upward, as if nothing is more important than making sense of the intricate patterns on the ceiling. His limbs are askew; his throat, wrists and inner thighs bear gaping wounds, and you know his thrashing is responsible for the hut's new interior design. At least he would have died swiftly, you know. Losing that much blood couldn't have taken long.

Coming back to yourself, you find a crowd of people in front of you, murmuring softly or casting worried glances around. These are your people. They are worried, just like you, and you feel a sudden sense of community and fellowship as Holdswell bands together to face this crisis.

The village elder, Samuel, steps forward, silencing the murmuring people with his stern gaze. His mouth is set, his posture rigid.

“Friends,” he begins, his voice hoarse but strong. “Friends, this is a hard time. We have lost one of our own to an act of terrible violence. Nothing like this...nothing like this ever happens.” He clears his throat and licks his lips before continuing. “It may be hard to believe, but we have determined that this was not done by a passing thief or stranger.” He pauses, looking at each face in the crowd, meeting your eyes briefly before moving his gaze onward. You frown, wondering what he means.

A gasp breaks the silence just as Samuel continues speaking. “Friends, whoever has done this thing is here. Among us. One of us. Maybe more than one. It pains me, but we must root out the evil in our midst. Business as usual is not an option. All regular activities will cease until we are free of the murderers, those who smile and call us friend by day and take our lives by night.”

You stare at Samuel, horrified by what he has just said. Slowly, you turn to survey the faces of your neighbors. You're not the only one; everyone is pale, wide-eyed, and looking faint. How can any of these people be a...a murderer?

Samuel gestures toward the north end of town, where the platform used for the springtime traveling band carries a strange new construction.

“A gallows has been constructed. Those we find guilty of murder will be hanged every night until this crisis is over. You know who you are; we will find you out and we will make you pay for this.” Samuel sighs, then nods at the villagers. “It is time to get to the bottom of this mess. I leave it up to you to figure this out; you know each other even better than I. Good luck.” He crosses to a bench and seats himself with a weary sigh, leaving your world spinning.

This can't be real. This can't be happening.

Around the crowd, silence falls. Faces harden, children are gathered around skirts, and tension grows. A voice suddenly breaks through the air. “Aster, you look mighty shifty today.” Immediately, outraged cries fill the air. Soon, everyone is arguing with one another angrily, or standing silently by, watching the discussions and listening with keen expressions. You swallow a lump in your throat, knowing you can't abandon Holdswell now. Taking a deep breath, you join the hunt.

Rules and Other Things:

1. Absolutely no editing of your posts. If you see a typo or forget to say something, feel free to double post, triple post, or post however many times you need to get it right. Don't expect leniency. I enforce my rules with an iron fist.

2. All Votes and Unvotes must be bold and red. They will not be counted otherwise. You *must* unvote before changing a vote or else it will not be counted. You may vote for a No Lynch.

3. This is a deadline game. I will keep a current countdown in this post, and will post one in every vote count. All votes and unvotes will be accepted up till the deadline. I'll handle nights a bit differently; if I have all of the night actions in early, I won't make you all wait on the deadline.

4. If a majority (half+1) lynch is not reached by the deadline during Day Phase, a random player will be lynched. It is in your best interest to avoid this.

5. This is a No Outside Contact game. You may not discuss the game outside of this thread unless you have express permission in your Role PM.

6. You may reveal your character and your role if you so choose.

7. No quoting the mod. Paraphrasing is allowed, but direct quotes of any outside contact with me will result in your death by modkill. It won't be pretty. Don't game me.

8. Dead people are allowed one "Bah!" post, which cannot contain any game-related information, and after that they're done. No more posting here.

9. Play nicely. Okay, it's mafia, it's not a NICE game, but anything outside the spirit of the game will not be tolerated. I don't want to see personal attacks at all in this game. Do it and you're gone.

10. Feel free to ask questions! There are some new players in this game, and I know the more experienced folk will be more than happy to help you figure out what's going on. And everyone's allowed to PM me questions or ask them on-thread; I can't guarantee what answer you'll get, but it never hurts to try, does it?

11. All night actions occur simultaneously. Meaning the order in which I receive them doesn't matter, and no results will be given until Daybreak.

All right! I think that's all; I'm totally exhausted so if I missed anything, please point it out and I'll clarify.
