A WHEEL OF TIME COMMUNITY

Recommended Posts

Welcome to the Recommended Reading thread! This thread has been designed to answer the age old question of "I've just finish tWoT series, what other series should I pick up now?". So through the recommendations of DM members, we are able to bring to you a complied list of series and stand alone novels which you might enjoy as a fan of the Wheel of Time series.

The thread is listed much like your local Library; it is in alphabetical order, and is categorized by the authors last name. The list is also separated into 2 categories; Adult books, where the authors target audience is 18+, and Younge Adult, where the target audience is 18 or younger. Each author's name is also clickable, and will take you directly to that author's official website (or Wikipedea if no offical site is available) so you can read a description of the books and also find out what other books the author has written.

Please enjoy and remember that the list is constantly being updated, so check back often if you need something to read!

Quick link - the below will take you to the start of the labeled category.

Younge Adult Book List

So, you want to recomend a Series or Author thats not on the list? Heres what you have to do.

All members are encouraged to reply to this thread and request an author be added; please remember that the aim of this list is to include books which are similar or as enjoyable as the Wheel of Time series, so please stick to the Fantasy or Sci-Fy genre. The information needed will be:

1. Authors name (ie: Robert Jordan)

2. Series Title (ie: Wheel of Time)

3. Current Books in order in the series or stand alone

4. Target Audience (ie: Younge Adult or Adult)

5. New book release date.

Please note that if all the info isn't included, the series will not be added to the list until all info is given; this is to make the process as fast and easy as possible. Once a submission is added, I will be deleting the request post to keep this thread nice and organized.

Also, if you see a mistake, notice a series which has had a new book added to it, or know the release date of an upcoming book; please reply to this thread with the correct information

Unfortunately, I have only recently gotten into the science fiction/fantasy genre (about 3 years now). However, I have managed to read a lot of series from Harry Potter to The Wheel of Time in this short period. When I have the time I will I post my full set of notes on the books I have read, however, I feel that I should at least post something on these 3 series. I have a feeling they will become big series.

Author: Patrick Rothfuss

Series: The Kingkiller Chronicle.

Books: The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man’s Fear.

Synopsis: Patrick Rothfuss’s style of writing is something that I have not yet encountered in the science fiction/fantasy genre. The main character relives the events of his life by telling his tale to a chronicle. It is nice to see how the character views himself in certain situations and recognizes his own character deficiencies (sometimes too harshly). If you really pay close attention you make an accurate guess as to where this story line is heading (but still leaves a lot of guess work). I love the fact, that if there is a part of the tale that is nonessential to the main story line he will omit it, instead of spending countless pages on a mute topic. Kudos. He has a really advanced magic system, but never allows magic to be the end all solution to every problem. Like Sanderson and Jordan it is clearly defined and follows rules.

Author: Anthony Ryan

Series: Raven’s Shadow

Book: Blood Song

Synopsis: I fell in love with this novel after reading the first five pages. I put a lot of importance in the growth of characters and Anthony Ryan does a great job of it in this book. I liked Robin Hobb’s, Farseer Trilogy, but certain points of the story would just drag on forever and the character would always whine and make the same mistakes (it got a little redundant and pointless). Blood Song does a wonderful job of navigating the character’s survival through the different intricacies of court and order life. This is a fast paced, complex novel with well thought out strategies and hidden agendas. The build-ups to a significant event are masterfully worked and I have yet to be let down in this novel. At the time he was an independent author (recently signed by Berkley Publishing Group), so there are some grammatical errors throughout the novel, but it you can work your way through them this book is well worth your time to read.

Author: Michael Sullivan

Series: Riyria Revelations

Books: Theft of Swords, Rise of Empire, and Heir of Novron

Synopsis: This is a quick/fun read. The story is straight forward and constantly moving, I could not put it down. Each novel contains a lot of action and easy to follow magic system. There is minimal foreshadowing which is nice to have every once in a while (sometimes when reading TWOT you have to read it twice to catch hidden meanings). If you read his bio there is a really great story behind these novels. He is just a down to earth, humble guy and his blog posts are hilarious.

Again, I know I am relatively new to these books, but I have read over 15 different series so far, and excluding Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson, and George R.R. Martin these writers create a world unlike any other author. Each one of these stories is unique, and will hold your attention from start to finish and leave you wanting more. Again, this is just a very brief write-up I feel I had to add these authors to the list right away. When I have more time I will go into detail about what makes each story so great, as well as the areas that are lacking. Hope this helps you to find your next novel, I know I am always looking.

If you look up-page on this subforum, you'll see where Saladin Ahmed is going to be in a Q&A right here. Can't recommend his Throne of the Crescent Moon enough. Also, he is your one degree of separation from a shockingly good collection of current authors; he co-DMed an all-author D&D session at Epic ConFusion in Detroit earlier this year, and you wouldn't go wrong reading ANY of the participants there. Read this blog post by Saladin's co-DM, Myke Cole, and look up EVERY participant name. You'll have a couple of months' worth of reading and be hungry for more:

Also, as has been noted, Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series and Codex Alera series. And don't miss Benedict Jacka's Alex Verus books (very Dresdenesque but definitely develops its own interesting voice) and Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid Chronicles (a rollicking barrel of fun).

Conan stories published in Fantasy Fan magazine[edit]

  • "Gods of the North" (March 1934) - renamed as The Frost Giant's Daughter and published in The Coming of Conan, 1953.[9]

Conan stories not published in his lifetime[edit]

Unfinished Conan stories by Howard[edit]

A number of untitled synopses for Conan stories also exist.

Other Conan-related material by Howard[edit]

  • "Wolves Beyond the Border" — A non-Conan story set in Conan's world. Fragment. Published in 1967 in Conan the Usurper
  • "The Hyborian Age" — An essay written in 1932. Published in 1938 in The Hyborian Age.
  • "Cimmeria" — A poem written in 1932. Published in 1965 in The Howard Collector.

Most importantly, these are almost all available for free from Project Guttenberg.  After reading these, go check out Robert Jordan's Conan stories, which are also incredible (and less racist.  By a lot.  As in, not racist).
