How about a thread about Mattin Stepaneos and Rand. Will they meet in TarValon and will he relinquish the crown of swords?

No, he's alive and well. Brandon stated that he thought about refrencing him, but decided it was too distracting. He is still in the Tower.

That's it? A kidnapped king of one of the most powerful nations (relatively speaking) who seems like a decent guy and he's "too distracting".

We get 20 chapters of valan luca, but Mattin Stephaneos is not cool enough....

And if he did people would say that he's something ranging between Demondred and Hakwing raised from being frozen all these years in hopes there was cure for his illness! So, kudos to Brandon!

Yeah but Luca is Ta'vern and the third man for the ToG ;)

And a Hero of the Horn and Bannerman for the Dragon.

Mattin Stephaneos was the king of a nation that was taken by force by the Dragon Reborn, who was given the crown by the council. He is no longer the King, and the Seanchan are looking likely to take the city anyways unless Rand gets his truce. He really isn't a vital character, and I seriously doubt him and Rand will meet. If they do, it'll seem to me like a waste of space in the last two books as BS has already stated numerous times that there isn't a whole lot of space to deal with the enormous amount of side characters. Theres also the fact that he was really only brought back into the series to emphasize Elaida's imperialist dreams and make her look like more of an ego-maniac. If BS didn't think he was important enough to include in the WT attack, I will be extremely disappointed if he's included in ToM at all (unless of course it's in a small off-screen mention).

Sorry to be the negative nancy, but there are a ton of things I'm expecting and hoping for in this book and Mattin Stepaneos is nowhere near that list.

I think RJ chucked Mattin in because he liked the Ilianer accent and wanted an excuse to air it (Domon doesn't talk enough and even Teslyn is close-mouthed).

Brandon is indifferent to it so out goes Mattin.

Posted

I disagree, Sharaman (and nice one, Luckers)...RJ wouldn't create such a character for no reason.

I think the relinquishing of the crown is part of his revelations since coming off the mountain.

I also think that 'kings don't sulk, they deliberate' quote from Tam was referring to Mattin.

Rand has begun realizing that he cannot be a ruler of each nation or even a ruler of all nations. He simply needs the resources of each.

I think Mattin's gonna get the crown back, and do a dance in the square of Tammuz (who was a great pig, according to Aludra)....

I've said it before, and it's time to say it again. Mattin Stepeneos is in the White Tower so that Verin can give him the Horn and have him bring it back to Illian. Moraine said herself that the illianers would probably follow the DO himself if he showed up in Illian with the Horn of Valere, and since its been hinted/prophesized that it will show up there since before it even came onscreen I think that its entirely possible that Verin unearthed it and sent it on its way before her death.

It could be that I'm wrong about Verin shipping it out with him, but the other person who know where it is, is also in the tower again and Suian/Egwene could certainly do the deed as well.

When did Moiraine make this definitive statement?

Ilian will follow Rand into battle anyway - a talisman is not required.

Mattin can't blow the HoV and call the Heroes otH. Nobody can until and unless Mat dies. Do you think the Light is plotting to kill off Mat and replace him with a new hornblower aka Mattin?

Or else, why would the Light give up the chance of bringing the Heroes to fight against GLoD at Shayul Ghul?

I believe I read in the thread about minor spoilers, or one of the boards referenced therein, that Rand and Egwene happen in the third chapter. Its possible Mattin shows up then, or I hope so. He's pretty interesting IMO.

ETA: Also, didn't Brandon mention at some point that Mattin's plot wouldn't be in TGS but in ToM? I'm not sure where I read that though, tbh.

Don't think Brandon made any commitment at all about Mattin re-appearing, just said he hadn't forgotten about the character.

The nine made Rand King of Illian because they thought "Lord Brend" killed Mattin Stepeneos. That will be a major legal issue over who is and isn't king.

Rand has the Laurel Crown willingly from the council of nine. The King of Illian rules jointly with the Co9 and the Assemblage. Do you think either of those is going to give the crown back while everyone was dying because Sammael/Brend fed all the food to the army? Stepaneos basically let them happen, whether he was under compulsion or not. Really it boils down to whether or not Rand will give him the crown back if he swear allegiance. I don't know if that would happen.

and Rand is totally concerned with legal issues at this point of the story?!?! Take what you want and pay for it...

Rand has always been strict about following the law. What happened in Arad Domon was people where only following the laws they choose to follow.

i had totally forgotten about the HoV, there are just too many side plots and distracting things that i couldnt keep track of them all. i dont think verin found the horn, but i think it may be time to bring it back into play. the horn never should have been in tar valon. i dont think very many of the artifacts that are there should be there, they need to be circulating through the aes sedai at the very least. instead they are just gathering dust. anyways mattin very well might bring the horn back to illian along with rand, who then gives him back the crown and resolves that particular plot. if you remember the horn was prophecied to have to be sounded in illian by the seanchan though, so mat also has to make it back to illian. since he is now seanchan, or at least very high up in their hierarchy.
