The Song

Hi.

So, I'm not really a forum-guy, so if this has been brought up earlier, I apologize, but I couldn't seem to find it.

KoD, ch 15;

Aviendha and Elayne have just discovered the formers ability to, as Elayne words it, "read ter'angreal".

Then comes this passage:

"A stone carving the size of her hand, all deep blue curves—it felt like stone, at least, though somehow it did not really look carved— was for growing something. Not

plants. It made her think of holes, only they were not exactly holes. And she did not believe anyone had to channel to make it work.

Only sing the right song! Some ter'angreal did not require channeling, but really! Singing?"

I was wondering, has anyone ever brought up a theory about this being the Tinker-song? I mean, I don't have anything to base it on really, it's just a connection, but I thought it might be fun if like, for instance, the Tinkers use this ter'angreal to makes "holes" in the pattern that redirects Rand's angry spells while they're all holding hands and chanting or something :p

I'm sorry for this mess, I'm not an organized person. This was just something that came to me while reading, as I remember reading something about the old Aiel all holding hands and singing while killed. The new aiels hate the way of the leaf, and I feel perhaps there will come some form of redemption for the Aiel through the Tuatha'an, maybe through this very ter'angreal? :p

I have a theory that the song is in Rhuidean, Rand saw them preparing to sing with the Ogier during TSR: Chapter 26 'The Dedicated'..... I have a theory that Rand will take Rhuidean as his own city, and the Tinkers will live in the other Palaces & what is left of the Aiel will become servants.

The Shaido can stay in the Desert.

anyone ever consider it may not necessarily be a single song but many various songs from the Age of Legends, remembering Rand's trip to Rhuidian, when the Aiel split into the Tinkers, those who went with the Tinker's just wanted to sing and dance, and the Aiel who remained said they didn't even remember any songs...

I feel fairly confident that the "Song" is not a specific set of musical notes and lyrics, but a skill or Talent akin to (indeed, related to) Ogier treesinging.  The Tinkers idea that it is "a Song" or "the Song" is the result of forgotten and misunderstood history (see Sulwin's confrontation with Adan in Rand's flashback series in TSR ch 26).

Remnant of a remnant: Twelve clans -> one clan (the Shaido) -> the pitiful, defeated remains of one clan safely sitting out the Big Guy's final moves in the middle of a useless desert.

I'm increasingly inclined to believe that very, very few Aiel will survive the battle, and those that do will essentially cease to be Aiel. The Shaido, ironically, will be the remnant of the remnant.

Think about it this way; had the Aiel not followed Rand (ie. followed Couladin), they, along with existence, would have been obliterated. Instead, one group rejected him, were ruthlessly beaten, but thus left alone to survive the Last Battle.

essentially aren't questions regarding the song moot because there are no more Nym left? unless there is one hidden somewhere. wheren't they required as part of the process along with the ogier? surely for the song to be effective it would require the song, the Ogier, the Nym and men. (hence why Aiel men don't sing, throwback to the way of the leaf where the men sang the song)

I don't think the story requires the song to be found, and don't think it needs to be. I think the people have taken different paths. they will start a NEW age, without worrying about what was lost. may as well ask why they haven't found the secret to Sho-wings, even if found how would the separate Tinker groups pass the word? how would it defeat the dark one? maybe a side note at the end to say it was found and the blight pushed back but I don't think the main story demands this to be found.

I think the Remenant will be the shaido too and the rest will take a new name. Although I would prefer if the shaido were crushed mercilessly and the remenant was rhuarc and co who then grew the aiel into yet another manifestation

The Nym can always come back, as long as something grows.

I dont think the song is designed to defeat the DO or any of his followers for that matter, I think it has something to do with growing or healing. I like the cleasning the Blight idea it is something along those lines not a song that will fix everything but that will help regrowth for a new age

Don't think that is correct actually. The Nym is a construct made with the power AND technology. That technology is long lost.

yeh it is clearly the talisman of growing used by the ogier.

As for the song searched for, I always felt it was the song referenced in Rands flashbacks in Rhuiddean. As it said his ancestor had waited for this his whole life, as this is what the Aiel did. Sang the growing songs with the green man and the ogiers.

So I don't think it's actually a song with words as its more and echo of the land from what was described in the flashback.
