Welcome, all, to a cordial game of newbie mafia! The following text is mainly aimed at newbies, but experienced players should skim it since it also contains my rules regarding lynches, etc.

 

The rules seem complex on the outside but are really very simple. Before the game starts, people are assigned roles. The mafia are the bad guys who you must try to kill. Of the good guys (usually referred to as the 'town'), most will be vanilla townies. These people have no special ability. There might be one or two lucky enough to be given a role like the cop, who can investigate a player and find if they are town or mafia, or a doctor, who may protect a player from death.

 

The game starts in what we call the 'day' phase. Every day, somebody is lynched. Everybody has one vote that they may use in order to indicate who they want to be lynched. This is decided by a majority vote. I will set a deadline each day by which this decision must be made; if it is not, the person with the most votes will be killed. In the event of a tie, nobody dies. If you're still reading this, I congratulate you. Most people don't. In this game, please [glow=red,2,300]glow[/glow] your votes; if you do not, I may miss them when I count them up. You can also unvote and vote again; unvoting is not required, but it helps me run the game.

 

After the day phase, the game enters the 'night' phase. This generally lasts for a shorter amount of time than the day. In this phase, the mafia decide who they will kill at night, the cop submits the name of somebody to kill, and the doctor submits the name of somebody to protect. Please note that there is no guarantee that there is a cop or a doctor in this game.

 

 

IMPORTANT RULES

 

Some games have huge lists of rules. I don't really care whether or not you edit your posts - if you do, people will notice and give you hell for it anyway - but:

 

- Don't quote your role PM as a means of confirming your role. This is cheating. To prevent it from working, the vanilla townie role PM is included in this post.

 

- Don't communicate outside of the thread about this game, unless you are mafia. This is also cheating - and hey, the person you are talking to might be mafia as well.

Finally, some general hints on strategy that I've accumulated through my own games:

 

Mafia and townies both win and lose as a group, not individuals. Thus, if you are nightkilled or lynched, you haven't lost the game. That said, townies should generally fight being lynched, since they want mafia to be lynched in place of them. Mafia should fight being lynched, since they are few enough in number that they cannot really afford to die.

 

Mafia should try to blend in to the town. It takes a lot of nerve to play mafia well, and so a good mafia player is one to admire.

 

Townies should try to spot who they think the mafia are. Vanilla townies might try to act like they have a role like cop or doc in order to try and draw the mafia's attention in the night and therefore keep the mafia away from the real cop or doc. The real cop or doc should likewise try to hide their role.

 

All good mafia players have a keen eye for psychology and people's reactions.

If you are a townie, a cop or a doctor (no guarantees), you win with the town; you win when all of the mafia are eliminated.

 

If you are a mafioso, you win when the number of mafia remaining equal the number of townies remaining. At that point, you can simply shoot them without worrying about lynches, you see.

And to confirm Pale Merlot's suggestion, it is standard in newbie games to have an experienced player on the mafia. However, that means there should be two innocent experienced players too.

 

My advice, semisuicidal as it may sound, is to focus on one of us older (i prefer distinguished :P) players for today, so at the very least you newbies get as much experience as possible. Day 1 lynchs are almost entirely random but you gain a lot of information (voting patterns etc.) for day 2 from them. Of course, another school of thought is not to lynch anyone on day 1 but that's increasingly seen as giving the mafia a free kill.

 

But your game, and up to you! Just my suggestions, take what you will

That advice sounds great. I'd love to focus on the experienced players. But one question - who are they? I know Dae and Talya have played before, but who else?

 

Pale seems to be trying to keep Talya distracted - always suspicious behavior in my book.  ;)
