How does Myrelle know?

In the great hunt chapter Whatcher Moiraine tells Lan that she has arranged the bond to moved to Myrelle once she is dead. She arranged it before leaving the tower, way before she met Nynaeve.

But when Egwene speaks to Myrelle when she and Siuan discover her, Myrelle mention that she had insctructions that the bond was to be passed on to Nynaeve when the time was right.

As I recall Moiraine doesn't meet Myrelle again before she dies so we can rule out verbal communication. The Green ajah was represented by Allanah in Shienar during tGH. Do you think Moiraine would have taken herself time to write a letter to Myrelle with these instructions? I'm having a hard time seeing that happening. Moiraine is busy all the time throughout the novels and I dont see her spending time on something she most likely doesnt find crucial for Rand's victory.

Anyway, any ideas? Did she write the letter or is this a slip by the great man?

It may not be crucial to Rand's victory but it would be important for Lan who has been her companion for 20 years. Think about it, it would take about five minutes to write a note instructing that lan's bond be handed over to Nyneave at the appropriate time.

I assumed this happened sometime during The Great Hunt, just because we didn't see her meet Myrelle during this time doesn't mean she did it. She had months in which she could have run into her.

*shakes head*  It was insinuated that the discussion with Myrelle took place IN Tar Valon before they even set off to the Two Rivers.  It even says that in the Encyclopaedia WoT:

[radio edit] oh hai, person posting same time as me! *grins*  Anyways, there's at least one reference to Moiraine writing to the Tower, if not multiple, so definitely not hard to include a letter to Myrelle. :)

The decision to pass the bond to Myrelle in the event of Moiraine's death was made in Tar Valon before the beginning of tEotW.  Myrelle has a track record of keeping Warders alive, and Moiraine did not want Lan to waste himself avenging her, in case she died.  This was before Moiraine and Lan met Nynaeve.

Moiraine informed Myrelle by letter, probably sent from Fal Dara, either with one of the Sisters returning to Tar Valon or by pigeon, of Nynaeve's existence and asked her to prepare Nynaeve to receive Lan's bond, in the case of Moiraine's death.

The arrangements were not all made at the same time.  Arranging to pass the bond required weaving that could only be done when Moiraine and Myrelle were physically in the same location.  Instructing Myrelle to pass the bond to Nynaeve was done through some form of correspondence after the events at the Eye.

These would be the possibilities:

-a letter from Moiraine delivered by pigeon or Aes Sedia or Warder

-Moiraine telling the instructions to a sister or a warder and that person telling Myrelle

-a slip from Lan's mouth

-Myrelle overhearing Nynaeve speaking about Lan and/or Moiraine at various times and inferring that Moiraine would have preferred her

-some sister discovering Semirhage's trick of gaining information from people's brains, that sister doing it on Lan and telling this part to Myrelle

As far as I know we aren't told all the names of the Aes Sedai that went to Fal Dara...there were 2 representatives from each Ajah, and then Siuan and Leane.

red:  Liandrin and ?

blue:  Anaiya and ?

brown:  Verin and Serafelle

yellow:  ? and ?

white:  Carlinya and ?

gray:  ? and ?

green  Alanna and ?

It's possible Myrelle was the other green.  I think it's more likely that Moiraine just got a letter to Myrelle at some point.

I also think that this was an imoportant thing for her to do...I think that Min told her something about it while they were in Baerlon.  Moiraine does what she must to see the Light victorious...I don't see giving Lan to Nynaeve as purely a nice thing for her to do.  It could also be that Moiraine knows what Egwene assumes in aCoS chp 12 that Lan's devotion to Nynaeve is the ONLY thing that will keep him alive and he is crucial to the Light's victory...either way, it's for her cause (and causes are what the Blue is all about).
