Brandon Sanderson said in his web site that he is up to 436,000 words which I think makes this the longest book in WOT.  He expects the length to climb to about 640-680,000.  He suspects it may be split but states he has no control over that.  However he is furiously finishing a revision of his first 436.000 words with line edits from Harriett.  Harriett has given him a firm deadline of April to finish the rewrite which is 33% done and has been ongoing for about a month.  Reading between the lines, it certainly sounds suspicious this much of AMOL will be book 12, with book 13, covering Tarmon Guidon, hopefully, following soon.  Will there be an announcement at Jordan.con in April?

Tarmon Gai'don first, Seanchan after. A truce that lasts until the end of the Last Battle would leave a worse cliffhanger than the last episode of the Black Donnelys!

But it was the Creator's intention that there was much that would go unresolved: the WOT series was aimed at the Last Battle, and I believe RJ went on the record saying that not everything would be tied up neatly at the end... sorta like real life really...

Maybe the unresolved part will be Mat and Thom's saving Moraine. Moraine knows it's imperative that Mat be at the Last Battle. She also says they could die if they try to save her. Would she have sent Thom the letter to save herself if it risked the Last Battle after all she did with Rand?

No... one of Min's viewing was that Rand couldn't win the Last Battle without Moiraine, wasn't it?

It'd be pretty frustrating to have a story that's been built up since book 5 to go unresolved... added to that, it involves one of the most popular characters in the entire series...

Given that it's unlikely that the outriggers will be written it'd amaze me if Moiraine's fate isn't tied up by the end of AMOL.

the last battle done, but the world not done with battles.

ofcourse there are going to be unresolved things, what made you ever think different?

baldur's gate series, the greatest rpg ever made, has loads of unresolved side quests in the unmodded game.  it didn't make it any less great.

Well this is what Brandon said on his website.

Annotation coming soon. I've got a big deadline on these AMOL revisions coming in April, and so I've been pulling some long hours working on revisions. I can't really talk about a release date or anything else right now. Harriet has asked me just to focus on the revisions. I think she'll be making a specific announcement about these things come April, perhaps at JordanCon.

So everyone pay close attention to every word she says during the con.

Not exactly.  Her exact thoughts were:

What was the use of telling him that he would lose without a woman who was dead and gone?

In support of the theory of Mat rescuing Moiraine after the Last Battle, it is entirely possible that Rand will lose. After all, Min's viewing doesn't claim that the Light will lose without her, only Rand.

Not that I believe Moiraine will be rescued post-Tarmon Gai'don, just saying that you could use that as a line of argument supporting it.

besides, hasn't several dreams and viewings indicated that the White Tower will be attacked by the Seanchan and shaken almost to destruction...and that Egwene will need the help of a Seanchan woman at some point?

This seems like something that would happen Pre-Tarmon Gaidon in my opinion.  Or perhaps events that lead to the beginning of it.

Who's claiming that Moiraine's story being left unresolved would affect how "great" ToW is?

I just don't think it would make sense to have a plot involving a major character, which has been built since book 5, continuously referenced (snakes and foxes, prophecy (possibly), letter to Thom) etc.... to not complete that would be a little odd... Would seem like a waste of time...

Seanchan plot's been building up since book 2 and also involves one of the main characters.

Which plot? The intrigue in the imperial family/the top level of the return? Perrin's story?

Surely, the DFs in the Seanchan leadership / the emerange of Semi was a tool to get Tuon to Randland, to kill her family, and to therefore raise her (and Mat?) to the throne...

What else is there? RJ needed a way to bring the Seanchan onside before TG ... et voila.

I agree that a big announcement appears to be coming. I am sure that many of us regularly visit Brandon's web site and read his blogs. Following is information that I have gathered over the last few months by reading Brandon's blogs, interviews and watching the completion bar:

  • Brandon estimates that AMOL will be somewhere between 600,000 to 700,000 words
  • Brandon has said that even though he is writing AMOL as a single book, it is not his decision as to if it is a single volume or broken up into 2 books. That decision would be Harriet's and/or TOR's
  • The shortest WOT book (excluding A New Spring) is 226,687 words long and the longest is 393,823 words long
  • Brandon has written approximately 436,000 words in AMOL so far
  • He hit 400,000 before the new year and has been performing primarily revisions since then
  • Brandon has been asked by Harriet to focus just on revisions and has a big revision deadline in April
  • He said "I think she'll be making a specific announcement about these things come April, perhaps at JordanCon."

Ok, idle speculation time here. From all of the information that I have been able to gather, I am guessing that Harriet will be announcing that AMOL will be split into 2 volumes at JordonCon and the first of the two volumes will be released within a few months after the announcement. Why else would Brandon be told to give all of his attention to revisions instead of writing new material. Personally I am excited about this prospect since it will give us new material to read while we wait for the last installment of WOT.

yes, that is my thought as well.  i doubt the 2 volumes will be released within a month of each other.  To get it out pre Christmas, trying to meet the november target, they would have to concentrate on the first half. the last volume could aim for jan as 20th aniv of series relief but that would be tough to do unless rj has written alot of it already, which is posssible.

ugg i really hope they don't split up the book i think that AMoL needs to stay in one volume to finish off the series

u know its funny i don't know y i feel so passionate that it stay in one book i just want it to hhmm
