HBO Officially Greenlights George RR Martin's A Game of Thrones as a TV pilot

HBO have given Game of Thrones a significant display of confidence, reporting that the footage they have seen so far is fantastic, that the performances are impressive, the budget they gave the pilot was huge (possibly the biggest of any show since Rome, if the $10 million figure is correct) and that they would be very surprised if they now didn't commission it.

They even went as far as to give a potential airdate: if Game of Thrones is picked up they will air it in March or April of 2011.

Final news on the series is expected in March this year.

Can we assume its not going to be like Legend of the Seeker?

If it is, it'll at least have nudity in it....

Its HBO!

Nudity, unlike Pirates does not make everything better. :P

No, it doesn't make everything better, But it does have a tendancy to make bad shows better.

Its like Vegas.

Those dance shows? They don't draw men there. And wives always got mad at the men cause they got bored.

Then

BAM

toppless dancing women.

Men eagerly follow the wives in to watch the show.

The wives got the artsy-smartsy stuff, and the guys get the bouncing bits. :P

*shakes head sadly*

I guess that reference is a bit obscure.

Shame on you Sinister, you call yourself a nerd. :P

No, he pretty much sums up the hopeless nerd. :P

I now require everyone on DM to go watch that movie, RIGHT NAOW!

Ok maybe not right now, but still it is a must see for any nerd, geek, dork, and etc.

Why would an Ugly person, a guy who bites the head off of a chicken, and A Whale Penis want to watch this movie for?

At the risk of getting dragged back on-topic, no, it won't be like LotS.

Reasons:

It's on HBO, not syndication. The budget is massive by comparison (about 4 times higher per episode than LotS). The writers are top-notch, award-nominated proper scriptwriters and novelists. The director of the pilot episode is an Oscar nominee (for his work on Up this year). George RR Martin is involved in periphral production decisions, and has a voice in casting and the final versions of scripts. New material in the scripts (there's a little, but not much) has met with his approval. By contrast, Goodkind took the money, did some publicity for the TV show and then ran for the hills cackling maniacally about the cash he'd gotten (which, compared to what HBO bought the rights to Martin's books for, wasn't much). GRRM is much more involved with the TV series and in fact will write one episode per season personally.

The actors are, mostly, experienced actors of stage and screen, many of whom you'll be at least passingly familiar with (even if only as that guy from STARGATE ATLANTIS and whatsherface who was Elizabeth Bennett in the good version of PRIDE & PREJUDICE and Boromir from LORD OF THE RINGS). The new actors playing the younger roles are noted up-and-comers, most with stage experience already.

The behind-the-scenes crew are experienced veterans of previous HBO productions, such as ROME. The vfx supervisor went straight onto GoT after working on a film for James Cameron which you may have heard of. It had blue people in it ;)

The pilot script is insanely faithful to the first 90-odd pages of the book. Much of the dialogue is repeated verbatim, scenes are directly taken from the first novel, the character descriptions are based closely on the book and so on.

Finally, the source material is absolutely, vastly superior, which can't help but be a highly positive influence.
