How many trollocs are there?

And where do they hang out?  I'm just thinking from a practical provision standpoint.  Trollocs eat meat.  Don't think it was mentioned in the first 11 books that they have cattle ranches.  And raids into the borderlands have all but ceased.  So what are they eating?  Maybe they're eating all the other shadowspawn - which is why the blight is so quiet.

It just doesn't seem like there could be millions of them - unless they learned to subsist on rocks...

Whoof!  I read through several pages and didn't see anything to show me how millions of trollocs are surviving in the blight.  Not interested in where they get their armor and weapons, whether they are cloned or increase through mating, I just want to know where they get their meat.

If there was somethingin that extremely long thread that adequately answered the food problem, I'll stop being lazy and go back and read the whole thing.  Thoughts?

I would say do not waste your time,  there is no way anyone could tell you with 100% accurcy where they get all their meat. The fact is, if there are as many trollocs as we are lead to believe there would be no people left in the world.  Just chalk it up to fantasy.  Maybe they consider Shara and land further out their cattle farms.

I hate chalking it up to fantasy - because invariably that means there is a big hole in the ficiton that the author couldn't fill.  But I have a feeling you're right.  Just a plot hole, nothing to see here, move along and enjoy the last book...

Or, that the author does not want us to have that information yet. By not telling us how many trollocs there are, RJ gave himself the opportunity to give us quite a surprise during TG. He did however give a hint in KOD,Moridin did not seem very upset about 100000 trollocs gone awol, only that he did not know what they were up to. If you can discard 100000 just like that, you probably have quite a few more to play with.

I believe it is called suspension of disbelief.

Correct, and he didn't accomplish it - not with me anyway.  But then I'm pretty cynical.

And don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to trash the series here.  I love WoT, but I want it all to make sense (in the world RJ created).  And right now, this is one thing that doesn't make sense to me.  I'm just hoping that one of you can get me to that point of willing suspension of disbelief.

Well if you need to, just know that are many lands beside Randland, and again all the stuff in the Dhoom mountins, it says they are meat eaters, and never was it said just Human or Trolloc.  It has bugged me also, but I have no issue with the hole.   The land we see is problay about as big as the North America, so there is alot of land out there we have no idea about, but three Seanland, Shara and the Madman palce.

The Blight is a huge area with its own ecosystem. One with a lot of plant and animal life. Trollocs eat that. Pretty sure that was covered in that thread RAND AL THOR linked to.

Your question was debated in that thread. We didn't manage to arrive at a solid answer that please all of us (at least not me anyway) but it was thoroughly discussed. The thread is termed "The Shadow's Economy." "Economy" would cover the food crisis. I had the exact doubt that you had and began that thread.

you mean the blight...?  the waste refers to the aiel waste.

some things you have to consider is that the trollocs are NOT 'natural' in any sense of the word.  they are a genetic amalgamation of various animal and human strains.  in addition, they are created with the use of the TP.  they were MADE to BE killing machines.

as such, you have to realize that Aginor was trying to make them 'perfect.'  intuitively obviously, that means getting rid of weaknesses; such as susceptibility to wounds, a sense of self-survival, etc.

this can easily be extended to aspects such as a dependency on food.  it may very well be that trollocs DO NOT actually need to eat.  their 'lust' for meat is simply an instinctive attribute 'inserted' into their genetic code to make them more aggressive. another workaround to food dependencies would be a biological mechanism that allowed the trollocs to hibernate.

personally, i believe that trollocs have a lowered metabolism that drastically reduces their food requirements and when couple with the lush ecosystem of the blight, allows for millions of trollocs to survive at any one time.

The lands the Waste covers may be as big as the lands it does not and if this is so thenthere may be millions of trollocs and if this is so then Light help the world

If Rand and a few Ashaman and Aes Sedai could trash a hundred thousand down in Tear (when taken by surprise) then I'm not too worried for the Light - especially if their all on their gaurd and marching in the same direction.

Indeed. That's why I think the Last Battle won't involve hordes and hordes of Trollocs

not unless the Shadow finds some way to keep everyone from channeling.

They didn't exactly trash the trollocs, they almost lost.  The only reason they won is because LTT took control and wove deatgates, arrows of fire and blossoms of fire.  Then Logain copied it and will pass it onto other select Asha'man.  Remember the Aes Sedai cannot produce powerful weaves unless Alivia gives lessons and Nyneave passes on what she has learned.

Moiraine seemed to do okay against them and she wasn't even green ajah - and wasn't taught anything by Nynaeve or Alivia.  And she handled trollocs on her own - well, with help from Lan.  And Aes Sedai know how to link so I don't think trollocs and myrrdrahl stand much of a chance - especially since shadowspawn can be sensed coming.
