Mafia: Mass Hysteria - game thread

The cluster of twelve students sat rapt in the CCNY Freshman housing lounge, staring at the flickering black and white images that, for many of them, was the first television program they had ever seen.  John Cameron Swayze's bluff features stared out at them as he relayed the news.

We take you now to film of the Junior Senator from Wisconsin, Joseph McCarthy, as he made a startling announcement to a Republican Women's forum in West Virginia last night.

There was a barely perceptible flicker as the station switched to the grainier film from the event.  McCarthy, an energetic 44 year old, waved a piece of white paper dramatically.

I have here in my hand a list of two hundred and five people that were known to the Secretary of State as being members of the Communist Party and who nevertheless are still working and shaping the policy of the State Department.

The gasps from the women at the event merged with the students' shocked murmurs as the video switched back to the studio and Swayze.

McCarthy went on to say that according to his evidence, roughly 30% of Americans are communists or communist sympathizers.  With us now is our statistical analyst, to explain what that means.  Sirayn?

The camera panned over to Sirayn, who shuffled papers in front of her before staring meaningfully into the camera.

Thank you, John.  What that means, is that statistically, about 3 in every ten Americans are communists or communists sympathizers.  If, to randomly pick a number, you have 12 people in a room, exactly 3.6 will be communists.  Back to you, John.

Thank you, Sirayn.  McCarthy has asked that anyone who identifies a potential communist call the tip-line at 1-888-4-PINKOS.  That's the story for February 10, 1950, folks -- glad we could get together.

A stunned silence settled onto the room.  Someone, it was impossible to tell who, whispered the number 3.6.  Freshmen who hadn't really known each other all that well to begin with now cast jaundiced eyes around the room.  Which 3.6 among them were the communists?  Which?

Day 1

4) Boyo

5) Barm

6) Danya

7) FDM

7.5) Griefy

9) Alys

10) Leelou

(MOD VOICE: Vote for whoever you think is a communist.  Majority vote to lynch.  With so few players, I won't put time-limits on yet, but if it starts to lag I will.  As with the Double Blind, understanding some of what I've said, the choices I've made in the setup, and my advice given in other threads with respect to this game may be the key to winning the game.  I will not answer gameplay related questions, except to say that the coroner will give alignment reveals but NOT role reveals.  Good luck.  With 12 players alive, it takes 7 votes to lynch)

3.6?  Wow, I feel sorry for person # .6. To not even know what 40% of your body is thinking. :P

Anyway, I'm going to bed, so not going to vote now. I just wanted to get the first post regarding the .6 of a person. :P

I'm voting [glow=red,2,300]Griefy[/glow], because w/e the #s say shes #8.

As well as her being the only # with a "." in it 7.5 3.6?

coincidence? I think not...

maybe the .6 means a sympathiser rather than a full communist member :-

using a pin and the names I go with

^*THAT* is actually a really good point...

"3 in 10" are evil hmm? Since we have 12 it does make sense to have at least 1 symp then

Unfortunately we are unable to rule out that you Talya are a symp trying to contact the evils

No vote on you, the evidence is so pithy not even i would bother to stretch it, but just like to bring it to attention.

damn foiled... :D

actually it was the first thing I though of when read it...just also thought that it could be they have the power to convert someone to a communist...that would also make sense....or one of them is a traitor... :-\

You could go on and on...and Kivam could well have all of them :D

Hahaha. Damn you Kivam! :P

;D

Told you to sign up  :P

Still waiting on responses from Griefy, Alys and FDM, btw - everyone else has confirmed they are in

So far I think that Griefy, bcx, and Barm are the communists and Alys is the symp. I only need a little more proof to be sure.

You only need a little more proof this early on when only BCX out of that list has even posted yet? o.0  You DO want to last long again... don't you Wes?

Checking in before going to work, so not much time for a write up, so I'll be brief for now.

For those not in the US, I'm not sure how much you'd know about the McCarthy hearings.  However it was mostly about McCarthy bullying people into naming names by using scare tactics.  Most of the time the people named were totally innocent and were only named because the first person had a grudge, or because they were the first names to come to mind.  Often these accusations would tear communities apart as neighbors and family members accused each other, all to make sure that they themselves were not seen as suspicious.  Sounds kind of like a mafia game, eh?

And then we have Kivam's comments leading into the game about how we should throw out our preconceptions about mafia games, think outside the box, etc.  All of this really makes me think.  I could be totally wrong on the angle I'm taking.  However, for now I'm voting [glow=red,2,300]no-lynch[/glow].

Actually, considering Kivam's views on the no-lynch (he tends to be its biggest advocate in appropriate situations) this probably isn't such a bad plan. I wouldn't put it past Kivam to set his game up for a No Lynch to be a very viable option.

Unvote

Vote: No Lynch[/glow]

I like where your heads are at. I'll vote [glow=red,2,300]No Lynch[/glow] as well based on what Kivam has said and the fact that we can use as many people around us as we can get whilst we determine what exactly is going on.

And given the theme of the game, I do hope that everybody realized that my first post was in jest. I do want to last in this game.  ;D

A pinko is slang from that time for a Communist sympathizer.  A "Red" was a Communist.  A sympathizer didn't actually belong to the Communist party, but supported them. So they weren't all the way red, they were just pink. :P
