Its Halloween... now what...

I still have vague recollections of the excitement I would feel as a child on Halloween. Now, it has little to no meaning and I can think of nothing to do except pretend it's a real holiday and get drunk. Is this all that is left of this 'once great' day? ???

*sports Freud glasses* It sounds as though you're in a rut, one that you have brought upon yourself by depending entirely on those around you to supply you with the excitement and entertainment you associate with the holiday. Far be it from me to accuse you of being self-centered, but I'd wager you'll have better success helping to create the enjoyable atmosphere and feelings yourself, for those around you as much as for yourself, than you would by merely sitting back and waiting for the fun to be provided to you.

In other words... if you want to have fun, it's up to you! You can't just wait around for someone else to do it for you!

Or, dress up, get drunk, and start knocking on peoples doors asking for candy. That would be a great day.

Oz, that's wrong.  But it's part of your charm.  I'm surprised you didn't send them on their way with a beer or two.

I'm with you, Artos.  You must be around my age.  I think Halloween peaked in the 70s.  It was madness when I was a kid, my parents would get well over a hundred, if not hundredS, of trick or treaters every year.  We would fill a PILLOWCASE with candy, come home, dump it out, and then go back out and fill it again.

Those days are over, because apparently Halloween is not "safe".  I, for one, hate this.  It makes me sad.

my youngest (11, 12 in dec) made mention that she might be too old for trick or treating this year. i put together a really cool costume for her and told her, next year.we had a blast. i love all the holidays, but they are what you make of them. we got tons of candy (and oddly enough, cash) went to a safehouse for games and food and such, trolled the neighborhoods (there is a time limit on that though)then we go home and watch scary crap, eat tons of chocolate, my favorite halloween candy is the MJ peanut butter kisses, then get ready for bed. we got some cool little novelty toys as well. it was great fun.

I was saddened by the number of houses that were dark, and how few trick or treater's there were. Even 10 years ago the streets were at least somewhat filled with kids, and now...

I went for the dressing up/getting smashed option. It does actually give drinking an extra dimension when one of your mates is wearing a two-foot afro and sideburns and another is dressed as sad clown. The sad clown accused me of trying to steal his girlfriend and I finished with several unaccounted for hours... All and all, a pretty solid night.
